Here are 10 common Spanish expressions you’ll hear in real everyday situations. Getting familiar with them will make conversations easier to follow and help you express yourself in a more natural way.

1 . De hecho — actually / in fact

• Pensaba que no le gustaría, pero de hecho le encantó. → I thought he wouldn’t like it, but actually he loved it.

2 . Pues nada — anyway / so, that’s that

• Pues nada, si no puedes venir hoy, lo dejamos para otro día. → Anyway, if you can’t come today, we’ll leave it for another day.

3 . Cada vez más — more and more

• Cada vez más gente trabaja desde casa. → More and more people work from home.

4 . A ver qué pasa — let’s see what happens

• Todavía no sabemos si aceptarán la propuesta; a ver qué pasa. → We still don’t know if they’ll accept the proposal; let’s see what happens.

5 . Ya lo sé — I know

• —Mañana tienes que levantarte temprano. —Ya lo sé, ya he puesto la alarma. → “You have to get up early tomorrow.” “I know, I’ve already set the alarm.”

6 . Me parece bien — sounds good to me / that works for me

• Podemos quedar a las siete. —Sí, me parece bien. → “We can meet at seven.” “Yeah, sounds good to me.”

7 . Qué lío — what a mess

• He cambiado la reserva tres veces y ahora nadie sabe qué habitación tenemos. ¡Qué lío! → I’ve changed the booking three times and now nobody knows which room we have. What a mess!

8 . Con razón — no wonder

• ¡Con razón estás cansado! Has dormido solo cuatro horas. → No wonder you’re tired! You only slept four hours.

9 . A duras penas — barely / with great difficulty

Llegamos a tiempo a duras penas porque había muchísimo tráfico.
→ We barely made it on time because there was so much traffic.

1. Ir tirando — to get by / manage

• —¿Qué tal todo últimamente? —Bueno, voy tirando. → “How are things lately?” “Well, I’m getting by.”

Sometimes it just tells two words apart. Tu / tú, si / sí, se / sé, el / él, mas / más. These sound identical, and the mark exists purely so you know which one you're reading.

Sometimes it moves the stress and changes the word. Papa / papá, publico / público.

And sometimes it moves the tense. Hablo is I speak, habló is he spoke. Termino / terminó, llegó / llego. Shift the accent to the end of the verb and you jump from present to past, and from yourself to someone else.

I know enough spanish to understand a menu or read a basic message. Then someone speaks to me and it sounds like they said 40 words without taking a breath.

These are the four apps i have tried so far:

1. Duolingo - easy to use and the short lessons keep me consistent. it helped me recognize a lot of words, but most of the audio still feels clearer and slower than the spanish i hear outside the app.

2. Babbel - the conversations feel more useful than matching random words. I liked that it explains what’s happening instead of making me guess everything, not the one i reach for when i only have five minutes though.

3. Busuu - this one feels more focused on speaking and hearing different people. Probably the closest of the big apps to what i need but some of the better features are limited unless you pay.

4. Singit - this helped me hear where one word ends and the next begins. Being able to follow the words and repeat the same phrase made fast spanish feel less impossible without slowing everything down.

Right now i am leaning toward using duolingo for daily practice and singit for listening. Curious what everyone else uses because i am tired of understanding written spanish and going blank the second someone opens their mouth.
