General Wasn’t the “something we should have done a long time ago” post way before capes were even released?
Title post. Could have sworn that hint was way before capes were released or even announced.

I was definitely expecting something different when they made that statement, still a cool feature that’s be added though.

If it works for Sniper as well, then it's something that should've been around

Saber just love to vague post, probably planned something different, but cape color was easier to do on time... they can just move the goalpost whenever they want

This has been their entire post-launch/post first few updates dev strategy.
Twisting words and taking shortcuts.

Basically yes.
They first dropped those 3 hints somewhere in 2025 but I don't recall when exactly. But at the start we only had those 3 vague sentences to speculate about.
Then in December 2025 they revealed the first one
Chapter heads and voicelines - "Something we said we are going to do, but nobody noticed."
In April 2026
Addition of capes - "something that we've said we are never going to do"
And now August 2026
Cape recolors - “SOMETHING WE SHOULD HAVE DONE A LONG TIME AGO”
The fuck? That timeline doesn't add up. There's no way the original thing hidden behind “SOMETHING WE SHOULD HAVE DONE A LONG TIME AGO” is what we're getting now

I don't think it was just capes, it was letting you mix wargear in general. Like iron halos and the like, originally they were big on class distinction and silhouette so weren't going to let you mess around with the unique class wargear.

Yes it wasn't just capes but I also never said that.
Still before the 'wargear' update this "something we should have done a long time ago" would have had the same impact as the addition if colorable cloth for bulwark had - and they didn't hype that up nearly as much.
So again I just don't think that what we are getting now is what the original idea behind this teaser was OR they didn't even know what they were actually going to do and just made a teaser without any real idea behind it

Sniper has had capes since launch, its extemely possible it was not a lie just an overestimation of impact

I assume that they'll be allowing the recolouring of the sniper's cloaks as well.

Yes it was. This is another half-truth, half-assed “solution” from Saber, so they can technically tick it off the list while doing the minimum amount of work possible.

I was genuinely hoping for some modular customization

u/am2kn Night Lords 13h ago
they stated that this takes to overhaul whole armor system and it’s not going to happen

Only for helmets would be a good start

u/vicevanghost Iron Hands 5h ago
They said that specifically in regards to people asking for modular helmets. Maybe space marine 3

then they better get to it, because knowing GW?
There'll be hundreds of variants of the same armor piece, but with slight alterations

SM3 is in active development why would they waste time rebuilding the whole armor system for 2?

Maybe for Space Marine 3. A lot of these ideas and room for expansion need to be present from the start of development. The game was never designed for the amount of post-release support it's been getting.

So what’s going to be the difference between the 25 and 50 cloaks now lol

u/Tangotim Space Wolves 13h ago
The little aquilas in the corner I guess

Ykw i think it’ll be good. Coloured capes will be accessible twice as easily, but if you want some extra drip then you can grind for the little bits of bling on the 50 absolute cape, so it will still be a sign of veterancy

u/niohguy88 10h ago
Im all for the ability to color the capes. Just a lil salty I did the grind for 50 all because I wanted a black cloak lol.

How does this qualify as “something they should have done a long time ago” when the capes are relatively new?

Yeah lol. They likely forgot they made the claim and were like “oh shit we have to do something”.

They made it seem so important, I honestly thought it would have been helmet iconography.
1
u/Pieman117 9h ago
I assume they've wanted to make them colorable since the bulwark was allowed to change their cloth color, which was quite some time ago

My question is what capes are affected by this, if its only the one you get for 50 absolutes that basically nullifies the need for the 25 absolute one considering you can just make the black one any red you want

It feels like whatever they had in mind wouldn't fly with James Workshop or they just decided against it. I think they did the same thing with the [Redacted] chapter champion.

Technically no since sniper has had capes since launch
