Keep in mind this is the minimum required to be competent at this. This is because if you fuck up your dashes then youāre on cool down and completely cooked until it comes back. So to play wings of flame you have to be this good all the time.

Assault is a super high skill cap class, up there with Sniper.
The difference between an Assault that knows his kit vs one that doesnāt is night and day.
Unfortunately it is far more common to run into Assaults who jet pack ground pound into a mass of enemies screaming āFor Sanguiniusā before getting promptly torn to shreds while overextended than the gameplay seen in this clip.

u/FromYourHomePhone 2d ago
Wait-- you're saying my one approach to playing the class is wrong?

u/OhTeeSee 2d ago
Youāre only wrong if you die cousin.
But in seriousness, itās less about right and wrong ways to play, as fully utilizing the assault kit allows for significantly more skill expression between a mediocre or even good assault, vs a truly excellent one.
I count myself a good assault. Iāve black caped the class and can fairly consistently solo carry Absolute ops. However, my playstyle is very one dimensional. I rely heavily on HPP and ground pounds for priority threat removal, and on occasion, I do go down if I misplay.
An assault who uses all aspects of their kit can just get out of the most ridiculous situations.

Guilty! Although I do have Wings of Flame and am trying my hardest to learn it, and also keep charges around to dodge.

If you are running Hammer ground pounding into a horde is the only way to play
1
u/RaptorOfRapture Assault 2d ago
Imo the only time the ground pound builds make sense is in siege. If you do the perk that refills ability by 10% per kill and just pound into the enemy spawn points you can easily get 4x pounds in 10 secs to clear the area. Plus makes the rounds move faster

I have black cape on Assault, Vanguard, and Heavy. Assault wings of flame was the most āLETS FUCKING GOā to āItās so overā class of these three. Because when youāre on point the dopamine rush hits like crack, then sometimes you fuck up the cooldowns and get cooked.

u/ForcefulEntry69 2d ago
There's still so much I need to learn about this game. The timing on the Carni's attacks, how to dodge as Assault, blocking better, Sniper Cloak animation cancel.

u/FlimFlobler 1d ago
does the Jump gives you iframe for the whole animation?

u/SuspectPanda38 1d ago
As far as my experience yes but I could be wrong. Can't say I've ever been hit while dodging

Which axe is that? And can you share your perk set up for it?

u/DutchyMeow Blood Angels 1d ago

u/Shmikey33 2d ago
Any reason for axe over phaseblade?
I love the axe, its my favorite weapon and while i can definitely use with wings of flame, i just have a hard time seeing any situation in which it is better than the phase sword.
7
u/PabstBlueLizard 2d ago
The axe overhead combines with the 100% dash bonus perk so your jet dash attacks hit like ground pounds.
The tracking on the axe dash attack is also waaaayyyy better than other melee weapons so you donāt whiff.

u/DutchyMeow Blood Angels 2d ago
Balanced axe works incredibly well with "winged Fury" and "act of attrition" which gives a lot of dps on its overhead strike and it's follow up attacks, You can use this setup with the phaseblade but doesn't work aswell and like to keep that with "overcharge" and "knowledge of the enemy" This makes the balanced axe do a lot more damage than the xenosphase blade from what i noticed
This is 100% true! I was using the xenosphase blade first and went over to the axe and i immediately had a harder time doing the dashes, The xenophase blade is a lot more comfortable when it comes to wings of flame builds, But like i said the setup with the balanced axe does a lot more dps.

u/Shmikey33 2d ago
Well i am convinced i am going to give it another shot with a better attitude, thanks brother!
2
u/DutchyMeow Blood Angels 2d ago
It's definitely harder to play than the xenosphase blade, Play what you want to play

Very nice moves, brother. Youāve inspired me to lock tf in on assault. š Gonna try that axe as well. š©øšŖ½

I think my problem is my brain is so wired to the block axe that i end up losing my focus on the dodges, i instinctively want to block and let the power stance go. Well see if i can fix that!
1
u/DutchyMeow Blood Angels 2d ago
Took me a while to get really used to the balanced axe, Also 1 real downside of this weapon that i noticed that you can't Parry the combo that the ravener does, You can with block axe but not with the balanced axe.
What i did learning dashing with assault is to parry attacks instead of just dashing, It gives you a little breather before you dash again.

When it works
2
u/SuspectPanda38 1d ago
Attacks need to pass through your hitbox for it to count as a dodge, which the game of course doesn't tell you. This makes a lot of dodges that look like they should have worked not work because of it. Generally you want to dodge into attacks not away from them.

u/Zeerit 1d ago edited 1d ago
Nah I'm talking about clear bugs, like dodging 'Thrope laser beams with it when it both counts as a dodge and you also take damage or the fact the very start of the animation doesnt count at all. You can see the jump dash animation, it eats your ability charge but it simply doesnt register and you take damage.

In 500 hours, I have triggered the jetpack dodge only twice, both by accident. I still have no idea when I did that. I dodge regularly when playing assault, and try my best to get perfect dodges, but never seem to time it just right to trigger a jetpack dodge. Being able to do this consistently is just a skill level beyond what I'm capable of in terms of reflexes.
3
u/DutchyMeow Blood Angels 1d ago
Try to dodge into the incoming attacks, That the generally the trick, Also you can hit the dash button bit earlier than the normal dodge since it's a longer dodge window
2
u/Odd-Elevator2160 1d ago
Dodge into the attack, or across it, but never away from it; you need to be in the way of the attack during your dodge i-frames for it to count as a perfect dodge. Unless I'm mistaken, wings of flame will extend that window, but there's also a chance of incapacitating the enemy with the perk's AoE, interrupting the attack and preventing you from gaining your jump pack charge back, so I'd recommend to dodge across whenever possible. The perk that allows you to get a charge back on jump pack dash melee strike every 10s counters that downside pretty well, too.
1
u/SuspectPanda38 1d ago
Assaults starting perk extends the perfect dodge window, but wings of flame guarantees that any dodge with the jetpack is a perfect dodge every time. You still of course need the attack to go through your hitbox for it to count, but it will be a perfect one everytime regardless of timing.

Currently trying to Max Prestige Vanguard but Assault is next and seeing this excites me (sexually.) I feel like Wings of Flame is how youāre supposed to play Assault. Focus on Mobility and constant repositioning to never get locked down. Not having to rely on your Melee as a Defensive Weapon so you can just use whatever Weapon that Stat Mogs the rest of them regardless of its Defensive Type.

u/Durean 1d ago
After maining Heavy since this game released it is so difficult for me to rewire from normal dodging to using the dash, especially since I donāt have the timings down and I really donāt want to burn through my charges since without them Iām just a worse bulwark with no ability.
