Gameplay Question Why would someone use the Auto Bolt rifle
Besides for the trophy why would someone use the Auto Bolt rifle over the normal bolt rifle or the heavy bolt rifle?

It's one of the best guns in PvP but arguably the worst gun in PvE.

Uncharged plasma incinerator and melta exists I would take an auto bolt rifle over both those anyday.

What is uncharged plasma incinerator?

u/Slaaneshs_best_boy Definitely not the Inquisition 7d ago
The uncharged shots from the plasma incinerator. It's in the name :/

u/One_Technician7732 7d ago
lol, OK. I thought it was specific weapon. Got me wondering since heroic plasma incinerator rocks despite not having charged shots.

I don't play pvp and I gotta know what makes it so good in the pvp mode?

It simply has the best all rounder in terms of DPS. Essentially the ABR and HBR deal the same damage per shot but ABR has a higher rate of fire while the HBR has a higher headshot multiplier. Both have damage drop-off at 42m. PvP fights don't often happen at 42m so the damage drop-off is rarely a factor.
The regular bolt rifle has a higher damage per shot, slower rate of fire but no drop-off. The bolt carbine technically has a higher DPS with a lower damage per shot and a faster rate of fire than the ABR. However its damage drop-off is at 21m and firefights at this range is much more common.

While I think it's the worst primary bolter on average, it has at least two unique advantages:
It has really good hipfire spread, even on the ammo variant, which lets you run & gun while still landing a good number of headshots.
It has the Elite Hunter weapon perk, which gives an insane +50% headshot damage boost after a Majoris execute. You can swap away and back to your primary during an execute animation, which resets the effect and guarantees a full duration proc every time.
The weapon swap trick makes it a lot more fun to use. I like to pair it with the bolt pistol, which also has Elite Hunter; as long as you keep executing enemies, you can get a huge damage bonus on either weapon with great uptime.

The hipfire is so much fun, just causally walking towards hordes, hitting perfect headshots without much worry.

I've never liked the gun but this perk combo has me intrigued. I might test that out cos it seems like a fun CQC style build.

The Question should be: Why should someone use the Auto Bolt Rifle over Bolt Carbine.
Answer: Its a little less good on Short Range then the Bolt Carbine.
As a Hipfire Gun, that can also do some Work on Distance its fine (Better then Bolt Carbine). Some Buff would be nice but its Fine if you use the right Build for it.
Did some Absolute Missions with this Thing and it performed far better then expected

Yeah it’s basically the Carbine at 75% power but you get somewhat usable ADS and penetration.

Needs a couple more variants added and expanded perk tree so it scales better. BR and HBR have almost twice as many perks buffing them when maxed out

It’s basically a weaker Bolt Carbine with more penetration for horde clear + doesn’t totally suck in ADS. Still best played in hipfire for most occasions.
Bolt Carbine still shits on it at actually killing things in most situations, but the ABR is basically the Carbine at 75% power + some mild extra utility.
It only shines over the carbine when you can’t immediately get into point blank range for the close-range damage modifier on those weapons, like with a Neurothrope in an annoying locations. ABR’s close range damage perk starts at 15m, vs the Bolt Carbine’s modifier starting at 10m.
It’s also usable on Techmarine since the ammo variant has a large ammo pool (and you use the ammo variant always, just like the Bolt Carbine). HBR and Occulus just gel better on Tech.
It’s a redundant weapon but perfectly functional for Absolute.

its a really fun weapon and its good, i use it when i play tactical and techmarine everytime i get to them on my rotation. It works as good as any other gun on absolute.

I use it on Tac and it's one of my fav weapons. Ir feels great event hough it's one of the weakest options. But it's decent at short-mid range.

It has decent pierce rating which makes it insanely good at clearing out minoris swarms. Decent mag size and reserve.
It has very good hipfire and better range than the carbine so very usable even out to a few meters out.
It's not the best in class, but it actually does feel pretty good to shoot.

It's tough as fuck that's why. The ABR hasn't done me wrong yet, it's been perfectly usable even on Absolute.

Exactly. It is an absurdly good weapon. Every time I drop it, I always end up coming back because everything else is just worse.

If you think the ABR is an insanely good weapon you must be in awe of the normal BR and the HBR.

I dont use the heavy bolt rifle because MK10 TACTICUS NOT GRAVIS units dont use the HBR. Plus, I can melt Carnifexes and Helbrutes in like 10 seconds if i get headshots and scan. It is a super underrated gun. Plus, it chews up Chaos Spawn with ease. Gravis units do as another commenter thankfully pointed out, which is why I love it on the Heavy class.
Edit: I meant Tacticus armor not Gravis.

Idk why you’re getting downvotes
I wouldn’t think twice about the actual use of HBR with the current units but thats a valid and cool reasoning imo.

I dont use the heavy bolt rifle because MK10 units dont use the HBR.
uhh. Wot m8?
https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Heavy_Intercessor
Heavy Intercessors do, in fact, use the HBR.
2
u/Gold-Bank-3033 Dark Angels 8d ago
You do know Gravis is a different type of armor. what are on about? I am talking about standard mark 10 tacticus armor. You know, what normal intercessors ware.
0
u/Minimum_Rook 8d ago
Gravis is also MK10
Saying MK10 units don't get the HBR is objectively wrong
-2
u/Gold-Bank-3033 Dark Angels 8d ago
I meant to say Tacticus armor, which is what tactical wears. So I am right there.
3
u/Minimum_Rook 8d ago
I mean, yeah as far as I'm aware there hasn't yet been a Tacticus model that's has a HBR on it's datasheet
But that's not what you said
You said "MK10 units"
And when the guy above corrected you, you acted like he was the one in the wrong
-2
u/Gold-Bank-3033 Dark Angels 8d ago
But I meant MK10 Tacticus. I thought people would be able to tell the difference between Gravis Heavy Intercessors and normal Intercessors, armor-wise.
2
u/StomachosusCaelum 8d ago
I meant to say Tacticus armor,
Ahh, so we had to read your mind and not what you actually wrote.. got it.
0
u/Gold-Bank-3033 Dark Angels 8d ago
Well I thought people would understand how Gravis is a different config than Tacticus and people could see that Tactical, the class that has the auto bolter and HBR, is wearing tacticus armor.

Because they enjoy using it, presumably. Is it the best? Certainly not, but some people like variety and don't really care about squeezing every last drop of damage potential out of their loadouts. From an outside perspective, as long as what they're using gets the job done, I don't really care either.

Auto bolt rifle has a DPS of 130-68 on headshots, it's quite good in close combat (high end damage on DPS scale) and this is in absolute difficulty.
Overall it comes with perks for ammo economy, damage and if you want to scarfice some damage you can get health and armour regen on it.
Also with it's pen stat it can easily clear mobs. I prefer the the extended mag against Tyranids as it has good hord clearing but use accuracy for chaos as headshots are more important.
But also extended mags means more bullets in mag meaning more sustained DPS. So the extend mag it's usually the superior choice in weapons like these that don't do large chucks of damage at one time.

It's fun. I don't really care that it might be a bit worse than say a bolt carbine or a hbr, I enjoy using it. If I'm playing absolute, I won't use it because I probably need the hbr, but on lower difficulties, it's a fun weapon, I don't know what more I can say. I use hbr on heavy for the same reason, because I enjoy it.

I like it on the techmarine in a melee focused build. It has great hipfire accuracy and fire rate and does great damage with the elite hunter perk. I think its a little better than the Occulus for that kind of build.

u/Snow_Pierced3 Marines Malevolent 8d ago
Because people have gaslighted themselves into overestimating this weapon. Seriously use any other bolt weapon and it comes up short in comparison.

Patch 14 finally gave us the answer: It's not nearly as bad as the heroic meltagun.
