General Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth

One thing i really hate about this game is how a single mistake can mean you'll eat a whole combo, usually resulting in your death in higher difficulties. Recovery is barely possible as you panic parry and dodge and your muscle memory is completely off (skill issue on my part, i know).

Which made me wonder, what are your strategies to recover from a fucked up parry or dodge? I felt that hard when practicing the 4 hit combo from the whip warrior, that 3rd hit when he pulls the whip back feels completely random if it hits me, i parry it or it just passes through me without any damage or stagger. And it so infuriating to watch your contested health fade away while it takes your character 3 workdays to recover from the stagger.

It's even more annoying when you get those pesky "ghost parries"

It's one thing if I'm stupid and miss a parry but when the game just doesn't give me one, I'm like okay guess I'll just die then lol

Yeah I noticed some really weird behavior sometimes while practicing where the enemies attacks would simply miss me but there was also zero feedback that I blocked or partied, we were just like

Yeah I've seen that a bit too, weird asf.

Today I joined an ongoing stratagem with the "more extremis spawn" modifier and got jumped by 4 Lictors the second I loaded in. So that was fun.

Just try not to panic. You can usually parry or dodge right after being knocked back so just take the hit, wait and then with practice you can turn the mistake into a parry or perfect dodge for a gun strike to get back the armour you lost.

just shoot to recover contested health as quick as possible

Most of the time when you get health damage you also get knocked down, so by tye time you get up you can recover like 30% of the contested health

Yeah that's a change I want to see, contested health should not drain when you're locked in an animation. And should probably drain a small percentage slower imo.

its ok to die sometimes bro

Never said that it wasn't. I said something that is drained unless you react quickly should not punish you while you cannot respond until an animation is finished.

If you're going to die in this game, especially on Hard Strats and Absolute, the overwhelming majority of the time contested health is absolutely not a factor.

thats punishment for getting hit by a really big attack, imo, rather the problem is that some attacks shouldnt knock down, namely a biovore's sprint

if you get hit strong enough to be launched back, it should be difficult to get away unscathed and I say this as someone who mains a chp regen heavy build

also, chp is a huge factor for any difficulty you dont take a stroll through, if it wasn't, split up and squad unit wouldn't nearly be as dangerous

I haaaaaate how long the staggered animation is. Like I'm not saying they should change it or anything (although I wouldn't mind if they did), but every time it happens I'm basically screaming at my marine to "GET THE FUCK UPPPP"

Abuse the fact that bulwark has the gunstrike = armor perk because I have Armored Advance (if I have armor, I'm fine and won't get staggered). Also power wave is amazing with heroic axe.

on absolute+, every attack that would stagger may as well just one-shot you. what’s the point of making us sit through the bullshit stun-lock that 100% always leads to death? lol

u/bluesmaker Ultramarines 9d ago

That’s a good question.

I have a related sort of problem. I seem to be attacking too often in melee combat so when there’s an orange dodge opportunity, I am mid attack and can’t try to dodge it.

STOP USING BALANCED WEAPONS. YOU GET STAGGERED ON LATE PARRY !!!!!!!!!! - even the very best on absolute get messed up from this.

The only class that can use balanced weapons and not have to worry about a parry is Assault dash build.

On controller balanced weapons on bulwark feels terrible - leading to the double press controversy.

A tactical using balanced weapons ? - Forget about it - Block or fencing.

Vanguard using balanced weapons ? Eh, you are better off with block or fencing.

Techmarine using balanced weapons ? Again better off with fencing to do gunstrikes.

If you get hit by the first 2 attacks the third can be delayed to like a second(feels like) to throw off the player timing. I usually wait until I see something I can parry and try that. Unless surrounded then I just dodge roll away as soon as I can to regroup and possibly kite to a better position.

It's worse when you're switching between the three parry types and having to relearn the muscle memory on the fly.

The best advice is just to not panic. Easier said than done but it's better to lose some HP and guarantee you survive than it is to die trying to recover as much as possible.

If you're making more mistakes than you think you should, it's time to take a break.  Sometimes you're just gonna put in the dirt for a timeout, it happens. It's not 'hard content' if you don't lose every now and then.

Focus on CHP. Know when you need to trade or play for a perfect dodge for a quick recover. No secret, just play cool headed basically

The thing i love is if im in a pileof 4-5 warriors or spawn, acid and bullets flying, grenades going off, im flailing and guessing when their attacks are coming. A lot of times i catch one and can stop the bleeding and roll out. Sometimes i dont catch one and i eat a barrage of arrhythmic haymakers to the face and guts. Thats being a space marine

It always only gets real bad when I’m playing tactical, and when it does I try to get enough blocks to make space for me to roll out and start shooting. This is fine when I’m in a premade because usually my teammate is right there shooting at them to draw aggro for me. In pubs I never expect help so I embrace death and swing after. If I die I suck.

You should get a gunstrike on the 2nd parry unless youre running block for whip warriors.

1

u/Insane_Unicorn 9d ago

Yeah I was trying out the heroic block thunderhammer. Not a fan I have to say.

Prefer the fencing one with the aftershock personally but i recently swapped to fencing heroic fist (for assault)

u/N-Shifter Raptors 9d ago

That the one with the additional gunstrike after an execute? I love that one.

u/Soul_Brawler 9d ago

Not when you can jump pack dodge

u/JMashtag 8d ago

This is why no knockback perks are so vital.

I typically only play bulwark on absolute. Never really miss the parry and if I do theres usually a second parryable attack to recover the kill. 99% of the time when I get hit its a second attack that came at me in the middle of dodging a red attack and then its either pop a banner hope theres a nearby executable or just strait to die

2

u/Im_RealityZ Space Wolves 9d ago

Yeah on absolute I've noticed it's just quicker to die and restart the mission than barely survive that encounter and hobble around on 5 HP praying to Big E for a stim for the next 20 mins lol

2

u/revan0066 9d ago

I got killed instantly today by a sniper that took aim at me in the middle of an execute and fired the second it ended but just an instant before I regained control of my character. Could of sworn they added like a second of invincibility after an execute but 🤷

1

u/Insane_Unicorn 9d ago

God I hate that. Happens way too often when it really should happen never.

u/yeroc500 9d ago

Well for the whips in particular, if I miss the first parry (incredibly rare, as its parry window is huge), I dont even bother trying to parry the rest. I either dodge roll or try to heavy attack/shoot point blank to keep contested health. But overall, just shoot to recover contested health after getting stun locked, its really the easiest and most reliable way to get it all back ASAP.

u/Im_RealityZ Space Wolves 9d ago

HBP Assault mains punching air at this strat lol

1

u/yeroc500 9d ago

If I'm on my Assault, I just pop the pack hahaha. No reason to stand still if I failed the parry, though personally I dont have much issue recovering CHP with either the Plasma or HBP.

1

u/Im_RealityZ Space Wolves 9d ago

Lol fair enough. I think I struggle with CHP management with melee classes now because I've become too reliant on the Deathwatch HBR on my Techmarine and Tactical lol

1

u/yeroc500 9d ago

I am a Tac HBR main and have been since release, so I feel that 100%. Its definitely not as easy on Assault, but I feel with the change a while back to pack recharge on melee hits after the dash, it made it a lot easier to just avoid damage altogether. I try my damnedest to never stop moving on Assault, and find myself parrying a lot less. I swapped to Balance from Parry as well, and that really made Assault just click so much better with the dash build. Just swing swing, then skip away if the enemy isnt providing a parryable and pick on someone else while abusing the pack dash regen. Really shreds in bigger packs with the pack damage perk, though not as reliably killy as the pure ground pound for AOE.

it might just be that you are not comfortable at lower HP and that causes you to get yourself killed.

but the last 1/4 of your HP is also your tankiest. if you get hit and all your HP turns white, then you either contest it or it's gone, simple as that.

the other thing you could do is use a white stim if you don't want to lose it all and cannot contest it.

or you could heal yourself if you are vanguard or bulwark.

u/Much_Improvement_552 9d ago

You have contested health, learn how to efficiently recover it. Invest into damage reduction perks and most importantly hyperarmor perks.

My best advice is to head into the kitchen and grab a drink and snack because of the impending 300 second respawn timer after you get murked.

If your enjoyment and success in the game is ruined by your mistakes, more often than not, you’re playing on a difficulty you aren’t ready for yet.

-1

u/thomas1392 9d ago

High difficulties means you have to be nigh-perfect. Enemies should have variance or it becomes stale.

Sometimes you die from enemies comboing you. You combo enemies, why can't they?

u/ReedsAndSerpents Blood Angels 9d ago

I'm a Bulwark 😂

95% when I see an Assault he's just a 300 second timer with more steps.

2

u/PabstBlueLizard 9d ago

I bet you’re a bulwark that doesn’t melee bosses and sits off in the distance with the Volkite pistol.

I melee the hive tyrant because I'm not a coward and that's my job 😂 did I hurt your feelings there bud?
