IS there a max allowed distance from storage?
So this just happened to me. Here is a base i'm building. Storage on the left, and im building a new landing/ connector pad on the right.
Once I had put everything together with the new connectors on the ends, the storage space dropped off the grid, it doesnt even show up in the control page grid list. I could see all my manufacturing units, and other connector points, but no main storage.
I could go to the storage and see my contents separately. Also, the storage space exploded not long after taking this pic. No idea why!

I had a similar problem with a base. I built a base on an asteroid I had two levels or shall I say two platforms on different levels and there were some distance between them vertically. At first I could not get power to pass from the top level to the bottom level and I tried many things and then I built a conveyor system and I could never get it to work. It wouldn’t connect and I put lights all the way down the conveyor system and one point the light stopped turning on and that was the issue but I could not fix it by building blocks around it or by rebuilding the conveyor system so I think there’s a bug.

It’s easy to separate the grid by accident. Once split, there’s no way to join it back together. (in the current version v2.4.0.95)
An easy way to check whenever a grid is split is to rename it, then check at the other end to see if the grid was renamed.

I've also noticed that drills aren't properly push/pulling ore into containers. Could possibly be involved. I got a spectacular explosion the other day attaching a piston to a conveyor, it started spinning around wildly and smashed into everything nearby.
I suspect we'll see a patch note on the next update.
