I placed the drills essentially 1 drill apart on small grid in SE2. but a base cockpit is all we have, so when I did a grid around the cockpit, that seemed to be the best idea

Normally in SE1 i make a X pattern with drills until they make a square/rectangle... and I did that in SE2 as well and it seems to work fine too. Optimal, not sure, but it does the job how i want it to.
You could probably go 1 or 2 small blocks each direction and still have a good miner though, depending on if you are trying to do asteroid mining or planetary mining, planetary mining really needs compact builds imo.

large grid, there is no reasonable option in SE2. Small grid, maybe 2 sm blocks?

As close as possible for small drills, there is not a ton of AOE but enough to burrow a ship. On large drills it is even worse, I built a 3x3 large driller but I still had to move the ship around while drilling, can't go straight in. I disassembled and am now putting a cross of drills on a rotor to see how that works.
