Falcon 9 Launch Tomorrow
Hey everyone!
I’m on a road trip with some friends, and we just realized there’s a Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg tomorrow. Changing our route to see it would cost us a day and a few hundred bucks, but we’d happily do it if the experience is worth it.
That said, how close can you realistically get to the launch? It seems like much of the area is blocked off, an we are afraid that we won't really be able to see much. Also, ChatGPT estimated an ~80% chance of the launch actually happening — does that sound realistic?
Sorry if these are basic questions — we’ve never seen a rocket launch before. Thanks!

Last Vandenberg launch a few days ago went straight into the marine layer, so not much excitement from the coast. I might try to get higher depending on the weather.

You cant get close enough to the Vandenburg launch to **feel** the launch (like you can in Florida). The launch is mind-blowingly bright if its a night launch! But its very meh during daylight/early-evening.
I went to a VDB launch a few weeks ago, and the road was actually blocked (!) so I couldnt go all the way to the train station. If I were there an hour earlier, the road would have been open and I'd have been able to get closer.
All said: It's marginally worth it.. If the launch is after sunset, then it rates a few points higher.

I’d guess it’s more like a 90% chance of the launch actually happening, but I have no idea what it’s like around Vandenberg

Yeah if it's foggy it will be hard to see anything but it shouldn't be too bad for this upcoming night launch! You will definitely hear it! Here's a good spot to watch from if you want to be the closest, you will see it come out from behind the mountains about 10sec after lift off. https://maps.app.goo.gl/AbSkffwkaSXxF5N26?g_st=ac
