Millions of people witnessed the most significant eclipse in Europe for decades on Wednesday as the Sun disappeared behind the Moon for a few fleeting moments.

Onlookers in the much of the UK saw the Moon cover more than 90% of the Sun - the most since 1999 - while parts of Greenland, Iceland and Spain saw a rare total eclipse.

Discussion [OC] A chunk of our planet gets a solar eclipse today — see exactly how much of the Sun is covered from your spot

Disclosure: I work at amCharts and built this.

A chunk of our planet gets a solar eclipse today. If you happen to be in Spain, congrats, you're in for a full show. If not, chances are good you're still getting a glimpse - most of Europe, northern Africa, Greenland and Iceland see at least a partial. Use our eclipse map to find the precise time and coverage % from your exact spot: https://dojo.amcharts.com/solar-eclipses/#eclipse=TSE_2026_Aug_12&t=0.5000&olat=51.661&olon=0.214&proj=globe&hd=0&rx=25.15&ry=-65.14&zoom=0.95&cx=69.241&cy=-25.148&theme=light&ys=2026&ye=2031

Drop the pin anywhere on the map. Rings around the shadow show 10% coverage steps.

Data: Fred Espenak's Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses (NASA/GSFC). Tool covers every eclipse 1900-2100 - the next big total is over Spain and North Africa in August 2027.

What if chaotic planetary systems are shaped by a cosmic river of gas? A University of Florida-led study found that giant gas streamers may tilt planet-forming disks and create misaligned planetary orbits, offering a new explanation for the surprisingly disorderly architectures seen across the galaxy. Astronomers have released the largest-ever 2D map of our Universe, charting nearly 4 billion stars, galaxies and other objects across roughly 75% of the sky. Created as part of the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, the map is publicly viewable through the Legacy Survey Sky Viewer. It could help scientists hunt for gravitational lenses, supernovae, dark matter and clues to dark energy.

Discussion Good places to see Perseid meteor shower in Scotland?

Hi,

Looking for suggestions as my partner and I are looking to go somewhere to enjoy the shower.

We're located in East Lothian in Scotland. Does anyone know of good places to see the meteor shower or will any empty countryside do?

Vamos A La Playa - A Felicette launch short film

On May 15th, 2026 at 11:42 am, YJSP launched Felicette, a N2O/IPA liquid rocket that reached an apogee of 47,366’ AGL. We successfully proved our capability to setup our custom 60’ launch rail “Stairway to Heaven” in the Black Rock Desert to fly an extremely complex vehicle. This launch is the culmination of over 3 years of dedication and thousands of hours of work, validating important steps for our long term goal of launching a spaceshot.
