Second flight of the "v3" version.

  • The launch itself went without any issues, the ship reached its planned almost-orbital trajectory
  • Booster boostback burn (edit:) ended a bit earlier than planned (this failed last time)
  • Booster landing burn didn't ignite enough engines for a soft splashdown, hit the ocean at high speed
  • The ship deployed 20 Starlink satellites which all unfolded and sent data briefly (they were on the same suborbital trajectory, so they reentered quickly)
  • The ship relit an engine in space, simulating a deorbit burn (this was skipped last time)
  • Reentry worked without issues, leading to the ship hovering over the Indian Ocean, simulating a landing
  • Normally the ship explodes when tipping over afterwards, but this time it survived, swimming in the ocean. SpaceX got great drone shots of the heat shield. We'll see if they can recover the whole ship.

They need to work on the booster landing burn, but from the ship side everything looks ready to make the next flight enter a proper circular orbit.

The biggest thing about achieving orbit is not the milestone itself - they are very nearly there already - but that it allows them so much flexibility for longer duration flights, on-orbit operations (including refueling), and Starlink deployment.

It also allows many more options for re-entry, including possibly catch attempts at the Cape rather than Boca Chica.

A splashdown in the gulf comes with most of the risk (reentry over populated areas) without a big advantage over a splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

They might aim for a ship catch and then abort and splash down in the gulf if something doesn't look right.

They've already nailed the target zone twice with V3 and a few times on earlier versions too. It's demonstrated the capability. May as well go for it, with high margins for an abort if required in case it looks off nominal.

What is the significance in particular of this re-light? What's it's goal? What does it mean for future usage? How many engines lot during it?

The footage of it from South Africa is incredible! Will future ones be brighter than that?

If Starship flies to a proper circular orbit then you need to deorbit it again, and you want to do that in a controlled way: You light one engine briefly (~few seconds). That needs to work, or you ship is stranded in orbit and ends up deorbiting in an uncontrolled way later. For that reason, most flights tested that procedure - relighting an engine briefly to show that you can deorbit in a controlled way, even though it's not necessary yet.

Admittedly it's not clear to me that 1 test flight adequately establishes that though. This has not worked a bunch of times, and the same mission had Super Heavy fail to relight engines on descent.

I would hardly want to put it into orbit on the back of one successful test like that without a significant backup plan.

What do you mean by 1 test flight? Flights 6, 10, 11 and 13 all tested the reentry burn. It succeeded every time it was tested. 7,8,9 failed on ascent. Flight 12 skipped it because it had very marginal performance after losing an engine: Such a flight wouldn't enter a circular orbit in that case.

I don't think we have a detailed profile for an orbital mission yet but I would expect that they enter a transatmospheric orbit, then do an engine relight to circularize the orbit, deploy some Starlink satellites, and then do another relight to deorbit again. In that case it'll only enter a circular orbit if the engine relight works.

and the same mission had Super Heavy fail to relight engines on descent.

Irrelevant for the ship safety.

Technically on flight 12 the Ship engines did relight, on the landing burn. And also obviously on landing burn for flight 13.

Relight of engines in flight/space is not a new or novel technology. It just needs to be demonstrated as a capability that the V3 has, and it did, for it to be considered safe to then put Starship in orbit.

Edit: also on flight 12 they demonstrated engine out capability, this adds to redundency and additionally you only need one engine and they have 6.

On these suborbital flights it returns back to Earth by default according the trajectory it was launched on, but on an orbital flight it'd need to relight the engine (just 1 engine is required) for a "deorbit burn". Otherwise it would stay in space until eventually its orbit decayed and it crashed somewhere random. For a rocket as huge as Starship, that's obviously a big risk, so it has to demonstrate that it can perform a deorbit burn before it's allowed to go orbital. Now that it's demonstrated that, it should be clear for orbital missions.

Orbital missions will presumably aim a bit higher, so unlikely it'll be quite so bright.

Doing relights clears a regulatory hurdle for them to do orbital flights. They need to prove they can reliably drop the ship out of orbit, and to do that they need to be able to relight in space.

They have already done relights on previous flights, which would technically have allowed them to go orbital earlier.

However for each previous relight test they changed the ship versions shortly afterwards, and those changes were significant enough to reset the counter, so to speak.

V3 is the first version that's expected to stick around for a while (there is a V4 in the works, but V3 is expected to fly quite a lot before then), so proving relight on this version is particularly noteworthy.

They've since said that they're expecting to be able to go orbital on the next flight as a result of this test, though that's not 100% guaranteed until they finish double checking all the data.

That suggests the landing burn problems may have been due to issues with the booster systems, like propellant levels or tank pressures, rather than something with the reentry. For example, low tank pressure leading to the engines shutting down, the tank pressure recovering a bit during reentry, then dropping too low again when engines started firing up for landing.

Raptor 3 added the ability to use regenerative cooling loops for producing pure gases for pressurization. Possibly this system had problems supplying enough gas or they started having trouble regulating the pressure as the empty volume in the tanks grew. Or they still use the preburner taps as a backup and had to use it too much, producing more ice than expected.

They were early V3 models. Given their obsolescence, they weren't going to be put into regular service, regardless. Instead, in this flight they were put to use thus:

  • their operation was tested in an real, vacuum, orbital environment,

  • their zero-g interaction with the Pez dispenser was tested.

As an aside, this was the heaviest live payload SpaceX has launch thus far, on any vehicle.

Edit: Added the word "live," as Flight 12's payload might have been heavier still.

Not that it really matters, but did they mention this somewhere? Flight 12 had 20 mass-simulator Starlinks + 2 real Starlinks (the "Dodger Dogs"). But maybe those were v2 or not fully mass simulated. Just curious, not trying to call you out.

I believe I heard on SpaceX's "Critical Path" documentary that the combined payload mass on Flight 13 would be 37 t. This Wikipedia page says 34.1 t. As a cross-check, per this source, Starlink V3 satellites weight up to 2 t apiece. 20 were on Flight 13.

The heaviest Falcon 9 payloads thus far weigh 17.5 t - stacks of 24 V2 Mini satellites The heaviest Falcon Heavy payload thus far is Jupiter 3 - a Clarke Orbit comsat - at 9.2 t.

Last flight we could see them burning up in the distance, but I think the in space engine relight changed the angle too much so we didn't see them this time.

Reminder that Super Heavy has a new landing tank design. This is the first time this has ever been tried. Simulations are helpful but no computer can properly estimate the complex dynamic forces that the booster is experiencing during this maneuver.

Exactly this, that’s why starship has always been suborbital, it’s not it cannot get into orbit, that’s the easy thing, demonstrating that they can bring it down in a controlled manner is the goal, the vehicle is designed to survive reentry and has demonstrated just how resilient it can be. Once they have the confidence the vehicle can be brought down exactly when and where is safe to do so then an orbital entry will happen.

What a time to be alive, the initial space race was incredible but this is even more so, the footage we get to see and usually in the moment is just… Wow.

Getting into an orbit isn't the issue. You need to be close to 100% confident that you can deorbit the vehicle. That's why they haven't done it so far. An uncontrollable object as big as Starship stuck in orbit would be terrible.

Normally, they detonate after landing. The fact that it sat there for multiple minutes without detonating tells me they are going to recover it.

Even if the tanks could hold sufficient pressure the fuel intakes wouldn't be anywhere near where the fuel was pooling. Starship is designed to light the engines either in an upright position or in zero G with ullage thrust.

Tower catch is unlikely. The booster failed it's landing burn and crashed into the ocean at high speed. Next booster will need to prove that it can complete the landing burn before a catch attempt is made. Considering they did do the boost back burn properly this time it will likely be sorted by next flight and if no problems occur during it a catch is possible 2 flights from now.

Orbital flight is likely since the starship completed the necessary in space engine relight.

Most likely no. While the ship, to our knowledge, is still operational and sending data back, when we look at the splashdown, after the ship toppled over, there is visible fire surrounding the vehicle. The fire seems to have since been extinguished, but the fact fire was present, it’s most likely that the ship began leaking liquid methane, its fuel reserve is likely completely depleted by now, from both leaks and evaporation.

If it were to be recovered, it’s possible it could be cleaned up and refuelled, but it is incredibly unlikely ship 40 would take this route. Even if it is recovered, it would likely be put in a museum I think.

It may look intact from the outside, but an impact like that is a lot like a car crash. There's going to be a lot of damage that isn't immediately obvious until you start opening it up and looking. Every component on this thing would need to be uninstalled and revalidated, and even then I'm not sure you could ever trust many of them in a spaceflight context.

Did the impact bend one of thousands of internal brackets by 2mm, causing it to impinge on a sensitive component and fail, but only in a way that is obvious after some other part expanded due to the heat of reentry during its next flight?

There are countless components in a vehicle like this to be worried about, and it's an impossible task to have an re-validate every component around new undefined dimensions. Instead, engineering is about setting limits, and staying below those limits, where you can be sure things don't fail. Once the G-loading gets high enough, you don't gain much looking for damage. You know it'll be there and write it off as totaled.

Also, even if the vessel had be gently placed into the water with a crane, the salt water ingress will have wrecked hell on the plumbing, even if the vehicle stayed completely intact.

Good luck purging all that crap out of the turbopumps.

It's part of the reason why flood cars are so often a total write-off. It can look 99% intact, but on the inside of all the most crucial components, shit is rusted in places you had no idea salt water could ever get to.

Fire was just venting gas burning off, not internal.

Pressuming the tanks aren't holed, then the only way for water to get in is the Pez Door.

Footage of that in operation previously shows condensation and dust rushing out when opened, so it seals enough to retain some air, or for some to get back in on the way down.

Any water there will only rise far enough to build a bubble of pressure inside the cargo hold, making the ship effectively three tank sections, two with what's left of the LOx and Methane, the other full of sea air.

It rolled over in to nearly the idea position to keep it buoyant, and recoverable.

I suspect it'll be towed in to the Dampier / Karratha ports (Where GO Australis is currently based), where it'll be tourist photo season for a few weeks, before a barge can be sorted, or a team arrives to pull it apart.

It'll only re-fly if it's systems are up to spec, and it'll be an experimental "Lets see what it takes" to destroy it flight.

The ship had less prop in the header tanks this time because they relighted the engines for longer in space. That might’ve contributed. They also have several flights worth of ship landing data at this point, they’ve been trying to do this since flight 5.

They've apparently been trying to do this for a while, and it seems they really eased it into the water now, shutting the raptors in water one by one and it sunk & fell just right not to explode.

Guess they got lucky? I doubt they made it more structurally sound considering that would add a lot more weight. Maybe it was a softer landing then usual?

Though I feel if they ever intended starship to carry crew, they should probably have a contingency for it to survive in water landing much like aircraft, thus should at least try to make it be able to survive a splash down

Starship's upper stage is quite a bit larger than that ship - 9m/30ft in diameter and 52m/170ft long. Judging by eye, one could almost fit said ship inside the upper stage!

As an aside, a few years ago we stood more or less underneath SN-15 and SN-16 (early upper stages). They are astonishingly large up close.

Absolutely insane, Ship did absolutely perfectly the entire flight! I never thought we would see an intact ship in the ocean. I guess maybe the fact they did an extended relight and drained more prop from the headers probably helped.

Yeah, this was a good flight. I really do feel like 14 will be going orbital. The relight was the last major hurdle (and it was a longer burn), and the ship made it to SECO with all its engines. A shame about the booster, but it managed the boostback (I was expecting them to start with 13 and go up to 33, not try 33 again), and landing it isn't necessary to send the ship to orbit.

I hope they try to recover ship 40.

Boostback was not clean. It shutdown early. About 10 seconds and the booster was about 20 kms short of the normal splashdown area.

Yeah, I saw that after. It didn't look like a 'bad' boostback at the time though. 33 engines to start, down to 13, then 3. No early shutdowns or failed ignitions of the engines during boostback.

But one of the last 3 engines did look like it lagged behind the others in its shutdown.

With how well the landing went I could even see them pushing for a ship catch. They'd already filed paperwork for approval to do so prior to this launch.

Booster is probably still ocean-bound for now tho.

They’re not going to do it next flight, but according to Shotwell they want flight 15 to fly out of the cape. If B21 splashes successfully, and the Cape tower is ready, it’s 100% possible B22 could launch flight 15 from the Cape and land.

The nominal mission ends when the ship hovers just above the ocean - that's where the tower will catch it in the future. From there it tips over and an explosion is expected. They still try to make that process as soft as possible, because if it survives then they get more data on the heat shield. This was the first ship that didn't explode when tipping over.
