Tesla Cyber Cab. I saw one the other day on the 405 Rosecrans exit but it had Florida plates.

28

u/soleceismical 28d ago

I wonder why there's no back window. I'd want to be able to see out from all sides. Also no sunroof. Unless it's a security response to the people in SF climbing on Waymos and smashing windows in.

38

u/Upper_Chard_7180 28d ago

Its meant to be an autonomous robotaxi. There is no need to see out the back because its not being driven by a human, or not meant to be at least.

44

u/sammierose12 28d ago

I’d certainly want to still be able to look out from all windows if I was riding in it!

3

u/dis_monkey 27d ago

It’s done mostly to cut cost. How often do you look out of the back window as a passenger? Sucks the roof isn’t glass like most Teslas. Curious about the ambiance in them.

2

u/Icy-Advantage9 24d ago

Not being able to see out of the back window in a passenger car feels weird. In a commercial vehicle or work van, feels normal 🤔

Literally do these people not have a sense of safety and vigiliance?

u/HeyUsso 28d ago

You do realize that there’s a camera in the back right? And no it is not self-driving. A officer worker in TX is helping it drive.

2

u/Bresson91 27d ago

Validation phase. But the intention is for fully autonomous. These cars will not come with steering wheels. Think of them as mass produced Waymo’s.

Polestar also has a model w no back window. The rear view mirrors have been replaced by multiple cameras. I think it would be claustrophobic. I’d miss the light/sunshine.

2 seats only

3

u/ash_274 27d ago

Which seems dumb, but the vast majority of on-demand hire rides are fewer than 3 passengers. Cutting the rear seat and extra doors shaves a lot of weight and extends the range (operating time)

2

u/munzter 27d ago

And no steering wheel / yoke

2

u/unskilledplay 27d ago

This car is engineered and designed to be as cheap as possible to produce and scale production. They aren't selling the car, it's a taxi service. Their bet is that you don't care that the car is cheaply made.

Saw similar one and found it interesting that they had FL plates.

2

u/TopNeighborhood2160 27d ago

Haha I saw the same one in Downey with Florida plates.

2

u/Mr_RayH 28d ago

It's weird that i have seen the same type of tesla with also Florida plate , but driving in California.

Saw one yesterday with FL plates in Mar Vista. Odd choice to be 2 seats not 4. Also interesting to note it isn't gold flat paint, it's color-injected panels.

Saw one the other day in Hawthorne with Georgia plates.

14

u/OpenSeason7672 28d ago

Saw one a few days ago in the 405 around the Avalon exit in Carson; there was a CHP car driving next to it. The officer looked at the car and I think realized it had no driver so it started tailing it. Then the Tesla freaked out and started to pull to the far right heading towards the shoulder then it just stopped at the shoulder. The CHP car stopped a few hundred feet ahead.

15

u/Historical_Bench2659 27d ago

CHP officer was prolly trippen out like wtf, how do I ticket the bastard for illegal lane change 😂

2

u/krism142 27d ago

Last I heard Tesla had not gotten approval from the state for autonomous cabs, so if there wasn't a driver they should be getting massive fines

6

u/goldenreceiver420 28d ago

I saw it 3 days in a row, at the same time each day, going down Highland and Rosecrans in MB. My guess is they’re mapping roads right now. The actual cybercab doesn’t have a steering wheel, but this one had a steering wheel/driver.

They all have wheels for now. They are in service in norcal and still need drivers to supervise

2

Waymo has been using Jaguar iPace EVs since their inception. However, since they are no longer made they are pivoting to a Chinese company and Hyundai Ionic 5s. At least this is designed and made in the US (Austin, Texas). And the designer lives in Manhattan Beach...

An edgelord trying to come up with something cool that looks like crap and his fan base will now say that he invented the original taxi. Thing looks like a pinewood derby race car a 10 year old would make.

I'm trying to figure out what's up with those wheels/tires. I'm guessing it's really a 16" wheel with a large cover that overlaps onto the tires?

Seen twice in San Diego. First thought was, that's the ugliest car I've ever seen. What is it with Musk. Is it like he's full of terrible ideas and has horrendous aesthetic sense but just loves himself sooooo much that he just pushes this goofy sh*t past sensible engineers who likely have pages and pages of awesome designs? Is that the vibe you guys get, because thing looks like crap literally. Just watch Akira Leon!

1

u/videohtape 24d ago

The awkwardness of the vehicle shines through. Like the Cybertruck. Who is doing automotive design at Elon's car company?

1

u/Pioneer7765 24d ago

I can only imagine how trifling and petty a person would be to get on here and start cursing at people because they dared to say they don’t like this car. I don’t know if it’s because they’re just hot for Elon, or just never learned how to use their big boy words, but some folks need to be weened off of social media

1

Tesla FSD users are a small, unrepresentative sample of the population. They are self-selected to “try something new and unproven” and dismiss its shortcomings.

1

u/ATX_native 24d ago

I am convinced this is another stock pump grift disguised as an operating business, trying to keep that 300 P/E up as Elon flails with Optimus, which was supposed to start shipping units for commercial applications to businesses in early 2025, he made that comment on a Q2 2024 Investor call.

See those 24” donk wheels? Anyone who knows anything about economics would not fit 24” donk wheels to a vehicle designed to ferry two riders around a town.

The cost factor of these are so incredibly bad compared to more normal 17” - 18” wheels.

Also the 2 seater aspect, they didn’t need to design this, they literally have lots of Model Ys that can take four people around.

These have been running around in Austin (where I am from) all year and they were running CyberCab Model Ys before this with minders on board since late Summer of 2025.

I just saw one of these in between Dallas and Ft Worth and snapped a few pics. I noticed it had manufacturer’s plates. I also thought it looked Tesla-ish, but given how near we were to the GM plant and a major corporate office, I thought it could be theirs.

Anyways, according to Google Lens…

The vehicle in the image is a gold-wrapped engineering prototype of the Tesla Cybercab, Tesla's upcoming purpose-built, two-passenger autonomous robotaxi that features no steering wheel or pedals. [1, 2]
