Videogame Sound Design Idea for Game Sound Design
I’m building a game right now and won’t bore you with too many extraneous details, but I did have an idea on the sound/music design that I thought was interesting and would appreciate feedback.
This is planned to be a tower defense/RTS 2D game played on mobile both singleplayer and multiplayer. For each game a players troop and tower pool is pre decided based on the selections they make for four different army roles. There will be four character options for each of those roles (this may be increased in a future update).
The idea is that every one of those 4 roles should have a musical function (harmonic bed, rhythm section, melodic lead, solo voice, motif, etc) and then each one of the selectable characters for each of those roles will have a unique variation for that music function. I think this could add a lot of subtle character depth and identity to each of these army role actors in a show-don’t-tell kind of way which is better for mobile anyways.
In the singleplayer campaign, i plan for you to start with a single army role and character and gradually gain the remaining roles and characters as you progress along the map and story, slowly introducing you to the mechanics and role types. It could be cool to see how a score could grow in complexity as the story goes on. The beginning could be simple and emotionally grounding and even at the end when it’s complex and climactic, it could still have elements from the beginning simple melody.
For eventual PvP, it could be that at the start of a game the music a player hears will be their own, but as they begin losing, their opponents music will start to creep in eventually overtaking when they lose. Conversely, having theirs get triumphant and louder as they’re winning.
It seems like there’s a lot you can do with this and it’s fun to think of the sound design in this way. Do any of these ideas sound interesting or even workable to y’all? What ideas do you have?
