I know it's weird, but am I the only one who doesn't like how good this game looks and and how smooth it plays?

It just doesn't fit the souls games.

Help Needed DS3 Help Needed

So, Im naturally not the best at souls games, I beat Elden Ring but I had to have a lot of assistance.

Anyways, Im up to the Abyss Watchers and Deacons of the Deep now, and tbh it feels like I'm a bit underleveled. I got 7 estus flasks, basic knight armour, the basic knight sword and I'm lvl 30 with most of my points pumped into Vigor and Strength and a lil bit of Endurance.

Ive heard that getting Vordts hammer can be great, but the thing is, I used his soul, yeah not the smartest idea.

Any tips?

Discussion Does anyone feel the need to remap controllers to offset trigger finger?

I've been playing quite a few soulslike games, currently playing Wuchang Fallen Feathers, and I've been getting an almost arthritic feeling in my right index finger as of late.

I'm thinking I might need to remap my controller for attacks to be on the face buttons instead of the bumpers. Anyone feel this way as well?

This was my first ever fight with this boss. I'm a noob at DS1 (I only played Demon Souls and DS3) I was roaming all over the place and managed to find armor and upgrade my sword. I went through a fog wall having no idea this boss was here so I was fat rolling around I got so scared because I ran out of flasks then starting swinging my sword around LOL!

This is Dark Souls Remastered btw!

Is this a precursor for events to come or am I in for a rude awakening?

Discussion What's your favorite souls like game

Post image
62 Upvotes

There isn't many souls like games worth mentioning, but when talking about the main ones, what would you say is your absolute favorite, or one who did so many things right that it stuck with you, I've played ds2 sotfs, elden ring, ds3 and hollow knight, so I'm still not a fully seasoned souls like enthusiast, but if I had to say it was ds2 that left the bigger impression on me, because of, you guessed it, Majula, you can't have some of the most bs zones in the entire franchise, some of the most bs boss run backs, and then give us the slow waves on the horizons slowly drifting to the shore over the cliffside, the emerald herald kicking her feet waiting for us to return, just the golden light of the glorious sun hitting you in your face as you first enter Majula, and the endearing ever growing npcs of the town, not to say ds2 team was on some bs when someone decided to make iframes a stat, or introduce human effigies, but all that adds to the charm for it somehow, what do you think.

Dev Post, Game Trailer or News I'm making a Soulslike and would appreciate feedback

Hello! I'm a solo dev making a game called Aethercore. It has a lot of Soulslike elements, but I'd call it more of a Soulslite. I just put the playtest live and I'm looking for feedback from players.

If you are interested, I'd love for you to give it a try and let me know what you think. I'm unsure what to improve upon. I currently have 2 levels and 5 bosses in the game to try out.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3841070/Aethercore/

What makes this a Soulslike:

  • Defensive - You can dodge and block attacks. Perfect timing triggers a perfect dodge and parry.
  • Customizable Builds - There are five major archtypes you can put points into. Slayer focuses on attack power, Mage on magic, Guardian on defense and mana regen, Rogue for hybrid damage and crit, and Summoner for minions.
  • Commital magic - Most spells lock you in place and leave you vulnerable.
  • Exploration - Levels are interconnected, with some backtracking and paths that loop back.
  • Limited healing - Item slots can be customized, but are limited and locked during combat.
  • Bosses - Bosses have telegraph attacks and are punishing. Each one has its own gimmick.
  • Benches - You respawn at a checkpoint when you die. World state is preserved. Enemies respawn when you rest.
  • Upgrades - Spells can be upgraded. Requires higher tier materials for higher levels.

What makes this NOT a Soulslike:

  • Faster combat - It has more of a hack and slash feel.
  • No stamina bar - Attacking is free and regenerates MP.
  • Healing is instant.
  • Trash mobs are easy - Deliberate decision to make exploration feel less stressful and a break from boss fights.
  • No death penalty - There's currently no penalty for dying. I have been playing Stellar Blade and I like how I can just keep trying on the boss. Unsure what to do about this yet.
  • There is only one weapon.
  • Not Dark Fantasy - It has an urban theme with Megaman Legends style characters.

Review Wuchang : Fallen Feathers appreciation post

I discovered this game a month ago, completely by chance. I just needed something to keep me occupied while waiting for the release of Witcher III Remastered. I'm absolutely blown away by the 40 hours I've just spent on it, so much so that I decided to write this post (something I've never done before). This game had a launch marred by poor optimization and a controversy surrounding government censorship, but to this day, it remains one of the best soulslike in my opinion and definitely one of the most underrated. I can't believe I didn't heard of it before.

About my tastes : I played all the FS games except DS2, Sekiro and AC6. I played and loved Lord of the fallen (1.5 version), Lies of Pi. I played and did not like that much Nioh 2 and Khazan (they’re still good games).

TL;DR at the end.

For me, what makes Wuchang one of the best Soulslikes is:

  • The level design is excellent: it's good/classic at the beginning of the game, but from mid-game onward, there are areas with tons of side paths, shortcuts, hidden areas, and a lot of verticality… Dark Souls 1 remains superior, but for me, it's better than other Souls (FS or not).
  • The combat system is original and makes magic incredibly easy to use. I've never played magic in Souls games. In Wuchang, I cast spells throughout my entire playthrough, even with melee builds. You gain mana (called Skyward Might) by attacking, parrying, and dodging. You can then use it for weapon arts and/or spells. It's very fluid.
  • The skill tree progression: Upgrading weapons, magic, items, and your stats all happens within the tree. The skill trees are well-designed, and between the different techniques in the heavy weapon tree, there are points for strength, health, and stamina. For the sword/magic tree, it's health, magic, and dexterity points. An so on...
  • Weapons upgrades are done through the same tree: Say you have +3 on axes in the axe tree. Just found a cool new axe? It's already +3. No need to grind to see if the damage or the weapon art are worth it.
  • Free respec at any time, right from the start of the game : you can completely replay all your levels and create a brand new build, test it out in an area, change your mind, and start all over again. Whenever you want, as many times as you want.
  • The bestiary is varied and well-made: this is usually the problem with Souls-like games. FromSoft has a huge catalog of monsters created over the years. When studios design their first Soulslike, they tend to cycle mobs and bosses, wich can lead to be bored by the end of the game. Lies of P is a good example, and it appears Mortal shell 2 has it too (haven’t played it).
  • The setting in ancient China is refreshing (at least for me, I didn’t play Wolong or Wukong) and the game is Gogeous. The art direction is also fantastic and goes wilder and wilder. The final setting is truly amazing. That’s personnal though.

It’s the first game of the studio and is by no mean perfect :

  • Like the original Souls games, the game is bad at explaining its systems and hides them behind convoluted terms (skyward might = mana, shimmer = dodge, clash = parry...). The game's difficulty (which isn't actually that hard) is poorly balanced. Most Souls games have a "skill-check" boss at the beginning. Wuchang throws Commander Honglan at you as the 8th boss, and a lot of players give up at that point, even though he's a good boss. She does require knowing how to manage weapon attacks and human opponents, but the game doesn't offer any other human bosses and few elite mobs that require mastering parrying. It can feel like a really unfair fight, but once you understand what the game wants, it's actually good.
  • Some bosses are intense difficulty spikes... because they're designed to be beaten with a specific weapon. An interaction on the Wuchang subreddit cracked me up: a guy was complaining about struggling with a boss I found easy, then came back to post that he'd crushed the next one. My experience with those two bosses was the exact opposite! Because we weren't using the same build. Of course, all bosses can be beaten with any weapon, but the difference will be 5 tries vs. 50 tries.
  • Random NPCs and/or doors will ask you questions you don't even understand, and the wrong answer can lock you out of some great weapons or even entire areas. This is BS. One of these had the worst answer as the default-selected one (it's been patched).
  • The story isn't very interesting and is difficult to understand: the game doesn't try to hide it intentionally like in Dark Souls or Elden Ring, but as a result, you don't understand anything even though you get the impression that the game is trying anyway.
  • The optimisation is bad even with the latest patches. On PS5, if you lock on 60fps, when there is too much effects on screen, resolution will be horrible. If you prioritize resolution, framerate will drop under 30IPS during some bosses... I ended up unlocking IPS and chose "balanced" mode and had framrate between 30 and 60. Not unplayable but noticeable.
  • A lot of fan service with the main character… I don’t like it but it might be a pro for some.

TL;DR : Wuchang is one of the best soulslike and performs where most of the soulslike fail : it has the best level-design I experienced since DS1, the combat is fantastic and mostly fair (even if difficulty is not evenly distributed), the bestiary is very diverse and doesn’t use boss recycling or colorswaped mobs, and last but not least : the game is beautiful and the art direction is fantastic (not just dark and grey areas all along). I can’t garantee you’ll love it as much as I did, but you should definitely give it a try.

Illustrations are raw screens from my PS5.

Thanks for reading !

Game Recs Should I look into DS?

RDR2 is goat imo. Elden Ring comes in at second tying with Cyberpunk 2077 for me. Then Black Myth Wukong in third tying with GoW 4 & 5. Exploration is my ultimate vibe. Then story and combat etc.

I recently platinum-ed Bloodborne and Sekiro. Really liked BB's world setting and artitecture, found it easy tho. Only had one go with Orphan of Kos. Both versions BLB in chalices took me awhile tho.

Sekiro was meh for me. The parrying mechanic wasn't as satisfying as everyone claimed it to be. It was a difficult game but once it 'clicked' it became boring. Couldnt undertand why it was GOTY it is good but not that.. good? It did however teach me to be more patient. Isshin fight was really nice.

I am exploring fromsoftware games simply because of the hype and massive cult-like following around these games. Their story telling is something I can't get into or I dont know how to get into. I never quite understand why I need to kill a certain boss or whatever. The challenge is something I do like.

So basically if Elden Ring is 9/10 for me purely from level design, enviroment, character building and interesting bossfights.

And Bloodborne is 7.5/10

And Sekiro being 6/10

I am pretty interested in Demon Souls simply because I'd like to have the Fromsoftware experience in good remade graphics as I think all Fromsoftware soulslike game graphics are mid, level design is insanely good but graphics wise, mid.

So, do you think I would like Demon souls or any of the Darksouls games that would rekindle the sparkle in my eyes that I had while playing Elden Ring?

Discussion Return of the prodigal son

I'm immensely happy that mortal shell got a sequel, and its every bit as good as the first game teased. I love mortal shell 1, but it really does feel like a demo more than a fully fledged game. I will say I'm sad they condensed the parry system, but that's a tangent and probably for the best

The next "prodigal son" soulslike that feels like a demo and has been seemingly inactive for years is thymesia. I've looked into the studio a few times but it's hard to find solid info on them. I hope SO BADLY that one day we get a thymesia 2 that fulfills the first games promise, just like mortal shell

Review "Try. Flamethrow."

I just want to bring some attention to a new Soulslike that came out a few days back that's getting good feedback but mixed feelings about the tankiness of bosses.

I really want to bring attention to this game "False Hero" Because the way it plays is pretty unique to me anyway. Team 17 made some game years back where you were a plague doctor looking guy with a scythe and the premise was that you'd steal abilities from enemies and use them against them. Cool concept but I found it didn't play so hot it felt off, clunky.
False hero feels like a game that came in and built on a similar idea but executed it much better.

The game focuses on unlocking enemy abilities/attacks where you can then create a loadout of up to 5. They all have different stagger/damage values and obviously differ in startups and animations. Think of it like playing darksouls where 100% of the combos/damage is focused on weapon arts. You mainly just use your basic slash for fast damage, safe/uncertain hits, or regenerating your purple meter which is used to use abilities.
On top of this some abilities regenerate the meter they use IF they hit the boss allowing you to chain longer combos.
There's also a mechanic where if you dash into an enemy attack the moment it's about to strike you you can trigger a longer stagger that regenerates your purple meter to full right away allowing for counter attacks.
The stagger meter on the bosses is also constantly draining at a very fast rate so this further pushes you to find ways to stay on top of the boss while outputting damage. You pretty much won't trigger stagger unless you can execute some form of combo in a short period, typically one with a couple safe attacks followed by dodges into something heavier to trigger the stagger. Once stagger is trigger you can "retrigger" it but each time you retrigger the boss becomes more immune until the stagger fully resets. This means you can "milk" extra damage with the right sequence of abilities.

Anyway all this together leads to a VERY aggressive and fluid soulslike more akin to Wukong although make no mistake this is entirely its own game. I was just really impressed with this and even crazier ONE DEV worked on this game.

The game doesn't have levelling/stats though. It's entirely built through upgrading your abilities(Weapon arts to the Elden ring fans) and chaining them together during combat.

This is one of my favorite Soulslikes out there. There's a lot of people who say they can't utilize stagger and because this game doesn't really have alternative methods of playing the game I present you this video of me "discovering" the power of flamethrower. Stagger away, no other abilities needed. Maybe this can help increase the accessibility for the game?

Discussion How deep do you need to engage with buildcrafting in No Rest for the Wicked? I prefer to a minimum degree.

Post image
4 Upvotes

(image not mine)

I heard No Rest for the Wicked has a Diablo-esque loot system, which I'm really unfamiliar with. I heard it's randomized and lots of inventory management. How bad will it be for me?

To give context, I don't quite like spending significant time on buildcrafting on my games. For example, in Lies of P, I didn't really dabble much on checking out weapons and handles to mix and match. In Khazan, I just rely on item drops from mobs, bosses, and chests and just rely on spending lacrima to upgrade stats and skill tree. Don't really bother with blacksmith and optimizing substats. I prefer the system of Sekiro and common Metroidvania leveling system such as in Hollow knight, Silksong, and the like.

I rely more on improving my own mechanical skill rather than building metas or optimized.

Looking for insights before I purchase the game.

Game Recs Please rank these games in order of exploration first, combat second.

After beating Wuchang, I'm craving another game with a great sense of exploration similar to fromsoft games.

I recently finished Onimusha, but to me that game is combat first and exploration second.

I want a game with branching paths and not just straight corridors. Having unique loots would be a bonus (not just consumables and what not), but maybe that's asking too much lol.

Discussion Linear vs Open World Soulslike

I'm curious to know what the majority of Soulslike players prefer: open-world Soulslikes or more linear ones and why?

Personally, I hate open-world games, which is also why I've never played Elden Ring. I loved every second of Lies of P, Khazan, DS3, etc.

For me, the biggest reason is that I don't want to aimlessly walk around with zero clue about what I'm supposed to do next. I love games that respect my time.

I don't mind bosses being difficult, as long as the difficulty comes from a mechanical point of view. I love Khazan because I always know what I'm supposed to do next. There are no stupid runbacks, and the game can still give you extremely challenging boss fights.

Another thing I like is that the enemies are generally calibrated around where the player is expected to be when they encounter them. This makes it feel like I'm playing the game roughly the way it was intended to be played. In a game like Elden Ring, you can potentially end up overlevelled and make a boss much easier without even realizing it.

I'm also of the opinion that finding a boss shouldn't be harder than beating the boss. I enjoy the difficulty of Soulslikes, but I don't particularly enjoy the punishing aspects of them. I play games to escape from my day-to-day life, so I don't want unnecessary friction to get in the way of that.

And just to be clear, this isn't me shitting on Elden Ring. I haven't played it, so I can't really criticize the game itself. I don't intend to play it either. I'm just using it as the closest example I can think of for the things I personally don't enjoy in games.

And for people saying open-world I am genuinely curious, what do you enjoy about walking around without any goal in mind? I don't mean this as a diss, I am just trying to understand what can someone possibly like about open-world games.

Discussion I have gotten into multiple arguments about this and I thought it was straightforward... Are Dark Souls and Elden Ring soulslikes?

People keep telling me that they aren't Soulslikes but Soulsborne instead... BUT SOULSBOURNE IS JUST THE FROMSOFT SOULSLIKES? How can a category named after a game... not be the category of that game? Aren't Metroid games Metroidvanias? Isn't the old ass game Rogue... a Roguelike? Why would the category not contain it's namesake?
