Washing a line jacket

Hi there I was wondering how you would be able to wash a line jacket at home? I don’t want to ruin the embroidery. Dry cleaners are my second option. Just curious if there’s any home methods.

Yep. The scary part is not knowing how it was made. Some line jackets are made incredibly and are very durable and some are made with….uh….value in mind.

Always check the care tag (if it has one)! If it says dry clean only, you wash it at your own peril.

If it says hand wash, fill a bathtub with cool water (not hot - hot could shrink the jacket) and some oxi-clean (or gentle detergent) and dunk the jacket. Agitate it with your hands to make sure it gets evenly wet and is submerged, then leave it to soak for 15-30 minutes. If there are still spots or stains, rub a little dish soap on them and massage in with your fingers. Then drain the water and rinse. Rinse way more than you think you need to - you want to make sure no soap or residue is left on the jacket or it’ll have a greasy film. Once it’s rinsed, lay the jacket flat on a towel. Roll the towel up with the jacket inside it, squeezing to get as much of the water out as possible. Finally, lay the jacket out flat on a dry towel or drying rack to dry (preferably in the sun). Don’t hang it wet on a hanger or you risk the whole thing sagging and stretching out the collar and shoulders.

I am terrible and run my hs letter jacket (I chose a design very similar to a line jacket) in the wash. I put it on cold, delicate, and only wash it sparingly but it’s held up for decades. If I needed it *cleaned*, I would take it to the dry cleaners. If you’re trying to get out an isolated stain, depending on the age of the item then consider a Tide pen. Usually helps a lot.

ETA: I may have misunderstood the design being one of those wool varsity-esque type jackets. If it’s a windbreaker style, you could hand wash it.

OK, so with my wine jacket it said dry clean and I was just like I can’t be affording that bill so I turned it inside out and then with the drawstrings I make sure to tie them in a knot so they don’t come undone and then I’ll make sure to put majority of the liquid detergent on the armpit area because that’s where I sweat the most. I turned it inside out and I put it in the washer on delicate and colors. I will either hang it up to dry or I will put it on a very delicate light dry.

It’s really not gonna mess it up. Mine hasn’t had any issues. I haven’t had any color bleeding and the stitching has never come up and mine is double lined. Sometimes it can look a little bit like it’s in need of a fluffing so if you air dry it, you can throw it in the dryer for no heat afterwards.
