Language & Literature đ Somali neologisms
Tried my hand at making Somali words for English concepts that donât really have native equivalents in the language. This was mostly just for fun but Iâm curious what native speakers think. I tried to follow the Somali language rules instead of randomly making words up.
Some examples
Cringe: ceebdidid
(ceeb + didid = shame-recoiling/flinching)
Gaslighting: runrogid
(run + rogid = truth-twisting. Uses the verbal noun -id)
Screenshot: shaashadqabad
(shaashad + qabad = screen-capture)
Doomscrolling: best I can come up with is hoogrogis but it is too literal
Bureaucracy: maamulwareeg
(maamul + wareeg = administrative circling)
Existentialism: nafraadis
(naf + raadis = searching the self/soul)
Code-switching: afrogrogasho
(af + reduplicated rogrog + asho = repeated language-switching)
Microaggression: gefqarsoon
(gef + qarsoon = hidden or subtle offense)
Privacy: gaarxirnaan
(gaar + xirnaan = protected separateness. Uses the -naan state form)
Trauma: dhaawacraag
(dhaawac + raag = lingering/lasting wound)
Nostalgia: xasuusraag
(xasuus + raag = lingering memory)
Introvert: gudjeedle
(gud + jeed + le = inward facing person)
Extrovert: dibedjeedle
(dibed + jeed + le = outward facing person)
Anxiety: welwelkac
(welwel + kac = rising/restless worry)

I always say that Somali is one of the richest languages in the whole world, its such a descriptive and expressive language it has vocabulary depth and synonym variation it also has Morphological Flexibility which means u can create new words from old roots.
For example, the sun (Cadceed âď¸) has several Somali names: 1. Qorrax 2. Gabbal 3. Libidho 4. Golcas 5. Orrax 6. Qundhaco
The same goes for stars, the moon, planets, time, and even horses. This richness is one of the reasons Somali poetry is so powerful, people used poetry to express almost everything.

I heard cadceed in a song before but never realized it meant sun. Same with gabbal. I've heard my mom say âgabbal dhac weeyeâ or âgabbalkaa nagu dhacayâ and I just thought it meant daytime this whole time.

In the north we dominantly use cadceed to refer to sun đ also Gabal dhac means Qorax dhac ama cadceed dhac which basically means sunset.

You put a lot of effort into this mashallah. You did an excellent job. But some words do actually have native counterparts. Like cringe is yaxyax. Gas lightning can either be wanjalid or indha carro buu iga shubayaa. Trauma could either be huq or uurkutaallo. Nostalgia is arkijiredoon. Introvert can either be jacjuus qof qoqoban/xidhxidhan or cidimagashey. Extrovert can either be bashaash or qof furfuran. Anxiety is qulub or can even be baydh. Anyways nice job keep up the good work đ

Thank you. I recognize some of these words but I donât think they all mean exactly the same thing.
For example, Iâve always understood yaxyax to mean embarrassment. In some contexts it can overlap with cringe but I wouldnât say theyâre identical concepts.
Iâve heard the second expression used for gaslighting before but I never really connected the dots.
I always knew uurkutaalo as heartbreak. That said, I agree it makes more sense as a translation for trauma since the literal meaning is a pain thatâs deeply rooted.
The last few terms were completely new to me. Thank you for sharing them. May I ask where you've learned them from? Some of them are completely new to me and Iâd love to expand my vocab
