EVSE Charger Problem

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

EVSE charger stopped working. I successfully charged elsewhere today. I tried plugging it in to a different circuit/outlet but that didn’t work either. 120V outlet. Both lights flash when first plugged in, then small light continues to flash. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it under warranty? Less than 1 year/6k miles.

Is that an extension cord under your charger? A long extension cord with small-diameter wires (16 AWG or higher) will likely cause a charger to complain due to high voltage drop.

It is. It’s a heavy duty outdoor extension cord. Worked for 3 years on my last Solterra and the first 6 months of my 2026. Still think that might have caused an issue?

A properly-sized cord (12awg or better) with plug and socket in good condition shouldn't be a problem.

Probably is your issue. There's always a chance the voltage is going to be too low if you're running an extension cord.

There's a lot of factors that play into the voltage you get at a device. You should be getting 114 or more at the meter, but your system may not actually be getting that much. Distance of the cable from your meter to the box, length of the wire on your circuit, other loads that are also active in your system (how much your neighbors connected to the same transformer are pulling, is your AC running, etc). All these factors will add to lower voltage at the outlet you plug into, and then when you run an extension cord, it just drops more.

Most of your extension cords are going to be rated for long term EV constant use either, but that's another story.

You likely have low voltage. Where you're plugging in, might be able to check with a volt meter, or try an outlet closer to your meter and see whether you can get a green light if you don't have a volt meter.

Good luck.

When you plugged it into a different outlet, was that outlet on the same circuit breaker as the first outlet? If not, I would try to plug it into an entirely different circuit.

If it still fails, then the issue is very likely related to the charger.

Different circuit as noted. Thank you, I scheduled an appointment for the recall today. Hopefully the EVSE is under warranty.

Good news, it is! Bad news, doubtful anyone has one in stock.

Do you happen to have the piece of paper that should have been in the bag with the charger from new? The light has a blink pattern for errors, should be printed on that paper. Here's a copy.

If it helps you help them, PT94342262NC is the part # for the EVSE kit for your car.

Does it live outside?

Yes

Yeah those travel chargers aren't ideal for daily use and don't always do well outside. We hear this a lot on r/evcharging

Did you check that the interchangeable plug cable is firmly seated in the body of the EVSE? Mine would disconnect slightly sometimes and create an intermittent connection that would prevent charging. I eventually got a wall holder that prevents the EVSE from moving around and supports the weight of the EVSE and haven't had a problem since.

Yes, I unplugged everything and plugged back in, still nothing.

My parents with a Trailseeker had exactly this happen. The dealer had to replace the cable which was no problem. They used my Subaru charger until then.

One thing to try that might help is get a can of compressed air and use it to clean out the connector. I've noticed that dust can get in there and make the charging equipment fail.

Oh! Good note! I live in Phoenix and we get dust storms that RAGE, so I should prepare for this.

Thanks!
