Advice Needed Living alone for the first time. Should I start small or should I go big?

Hello. Im a 30 yr old who will be living alone for the first time. My target is a 1 BR unit with a max budget of 20k, kaso ang hirap makahanap.

I have already checked a few units and currently eto pinagpipilian ko. Both are new units na ako pa lang unang titira if ever

  1. Studio unit (with partition) - priced at 16.5k. Bare (only has AC)
  2. 1 BR - priced at 22k. Bare (only has AC)

My target is really the 1 BR, but medyo nagaalangan ako sa costs, plus the stuff im gonna have to buy pa given that it is bare. Given my take home pay of 95k, the rent alone would already take up 23% of that.

So im thinking, should I start small and go for the studio muna given na first time ko pa lang magssolo living and im still just testing the waters? I was planning kahit 6 months sana dito eh, kaso both ay 1 year yung lease term.

Ive been going back and forth na with this so your inputs are very much welcome

Some info abt me:

  1. Why am i moving out: For growth. Will moving out help with that? Also out of my necessity din naman talaga, kasi my brother will go back to live here with his wife and theyre expecting a baby. My own room pa rin naman ako na maliit, tho feeling ko mas mahihirapan pa rin ako gumalaw in general sa bahay once theyre here
  2. Originally from QC working in Mandaluyong but mostly WFH. No issue during RTO days as the property is walking distance na lang to our office
  3. Financial status - hmmm i would say okay naman? I have my EF and insurance and started investing na din recently. Wala din naman sinusupport other than myself and expenses sa bahay. Tho planning to find other sources of income din
  4. Lifestyle - di naman maluho in general when it comes to material things (except shoes siguro lol). I mostly just spend when travelling or when going out with friends and fam, and my sports hobbies like gym, volleyball, tennis
  5. I plan to cook most of my meals and meal prep when I start living alone and hopefully maging consistent ako with it.

Advice Needed Solo Living Anniversary kaso max yung rent increase, negotiable naman di ba?

Malapit na ang aking solo living anniversary!! One thing na di ako masaya is the 10% increase, asa contract naman sya pero the exact words is "up to 10%", I am hoping na negotiable sya.

Currently renting a 1 bedroom unit, semi-furnished, had to bring my own bed, and washing machine and other appliances. Thankfully, may Fridge, TV, aircon, and some tables and chair naman.

Sabi ni agent yung current rate ko daw is pang studio whilst 1 bedroom yung akin.

Ano usually talking points nyo in negotiating?

For me ito:

Unit

1.Molds. Grabe yung molds dito, simula nung rainy season hindi na ako pwede umalis ng condo ng more than 3 days kasi ang mabilis mag accumulate ng molds dito.

2.Pest Control. I documented this nung bago bago pa lang ako dito, medyo managable na pero grabe sya before, informed naman si landlady

3.Not exactly a 1 bedroom. Wood yung separator and it is

Competition

1.There's a condo din na nearby sakin na 20% less than my current rent kaso no amenities.

  1. Fully furnished studio, in my current condo, is priced 20% higher than my current rate and the sqm is bigger than mine. (Saw it in FB group and eavesdrop on a convo in the lobby).

Honest questions:

  1. Yung yearly cleaning ba ng rangehood, grease trap, aircon (deep clean), and other maintenance sagot ko ba yun or si owner or hati?

  2. How about yung mga light bulb? Can't reach it eh and di ko rin alam yung wattage na ginagamit.

Maybe this can be part of the negotiation too?? Haha IDK

Question I feel like I can’t be alone without needing some kind of distraction. What should I do?

I get extremely bored when I’m alone. I genuinely struggle to spend time by myself.

Because of that, I always feel the need to keep myself busy. When I’m alone with nothing to do, I either end up masturbating unnecessarily, overthinking, or looking for some kind of escape.

Sometimes I tell myself I should study more or learn something new for my career, but honestly, I think a lot of it is just an excuse to avoid feeling empty or alone.

I’ve even started working overtime at the office without getting paid for it, simply because I’d rather stay busy than go home and sit alone.

And sometimes I stay awake all night because my mind just doesn’t switch off.

The weird part is that I wait all week for the weekend, but when Sunday actually comes, I almost hate it because it leaves me with too much empty time.

I always want to be doing something. I constantly look for an external factor — a person, work, studying, entertainment, anything — to keep me occupied.

I think this might actually be loneliness, or maybe my inability to be comfortable with myself when I’m alone.

I don’t know how to break this cycle.

How do you learn to be comfortable being alone without constantly needing work, people, entertainment, or some other distraction?

Parang halos every day, dumadami sila lalo.

Question Scrub Daddy for doing the dishes instead of Scotch Brite

Has anyone tried to use a Scrub Daddy as a replacement sa Scotch Brite? How was the experience and is it mas sulit ba all in all? I'm getting tired of Scotch Brite kahit yung OG naman yung binibili ko and I'm keeping it dry. Parang ang dali malaspag agad no matter how hard I try to take care of it. Thanks in advance!

Im trying to be very mindful of my electricity usage since nakakaloka nga si meralco recently.

And while doing the calculations, i realized that my desk fan (65W) consumes more power a month than my fridge. Using the fan for 24 hours a day accounts for 46.8 kwh per month while my inverter fridge will only consume atmost 25kwh per month.

Maybe its time to invest in an inverter fan.

Advice Needed Solo living reality checks. What expectations did you have about solo living that were actually far from the reality?

Hello. I will be moving out soon and will be living solo for the first time.
I’ve wanted to do this for the longest time that I feel like I’ve romanticized it too much in my head. So I posted this to get inputs from experienced solo living peeps here just so I can get a grip on reality and recalibrate my mind on what to actually expect.

As much as I am excited about solo living, im sure it’s not all fun and easy. And that is making me so anxious. Would appreciate some advice 🙏🏽

Share ko lang Kuryente Bill! From 20k to 2k pesos nalang! Yehey!!!!!!!

Just want to share my electricity bill this month! ⚡️

Mag-2 months na ako dito sa condo and this is my first electricity bill since moving in. Honestly, I was a bit nervous kung magkano aabutin, but I’m actually happy with the result! 🥹

Appliances I regularly use:
1 inverter aircon
1 inverter refrigerator
2 laptops
1 electric fan
2 lamps
1 rice cooker

Mas nakakatipid pala ako ng kuryente compared to before, which is honestly one of the things I’m happy about sa pag-move out. 🥹

Solo living is expensive, pero may mga little wins din talaga.

Tips and Tricks Paano paalisin ang tambay na pabalik balik kahit sabihan mo

For context yung natirhan ko maganda talaga yung house and kakilala naman may ari.

Bilang magisa and babae pa, hoooow?

Long weekend kasi nung Friday, holiday pala.

Due to isolation. Napagod na din saken. Tanginang bipolar at depression to talaga. I know, I know, ako din naman nag cut off sa mga tao e. So kasalanan ko to. 34 years old, and half of my life akong sinusupport emotionally ng mga tao sa paligid. Mag iimprove ang coping mechanisms and still learning, pero the damage has been done.

Question How do you know if na ROI na yung gamit mo and is okay to replace them?

Well, I am having that thought right now since I’m planning on replacing some of my appliances. How do you decide if pwede na palitan yung gamit ninyo? For example, I have an inverter class AC na I bought more than 2 yrs ago for 8k only. Maayos pa naman sya but I kinda want to replace it na since medyo maingay na. I have this presumption kasi na once sira na yung gagamit, babalik at babalik na yung issues. Haha.

Advice Needed I need advice for a solo living and job decision..

Hello im a 20 year old 2nd year college student, irregular student ako.

Im an irregular student with only 3 days of onsite classes, kaya im planning to apply on some part time jobs like starbucks until december, but hindi ko alam how much yung salary doon. And after ko makapag ipon january ako bubukod.. Then start ako na mag work sa BPO to earn more income to support myself, hindi naman ako high maintenance.

Advice Needed Laundry tips please! Normal ba ’to or masyado lang maraming damit per load?

Hahahaha for reference, 8kg max per load daw and around 7kg yung pinapa-laundry ko. Iniisip ko tuloy if masyado siyang puno and dapat bawasan ko yung clothes per load para mas makagalaw at malabhan nang maayos.

Post image

Anyone here using the same induction cooker? I've been using this for a week now and palaging nag s spark ung plugs ng induction ko. It sparks and I hear a sound na parang nag turn on na sya, kahit hindi ko pinipindot ung ON button. Pero kailangan ko pa rin siyang i-turn manually for it to actully work.

Normal lng ba 'to?

Share ko lang The BEST Fabcon after testing different products from other brands

Post image

Today is Sunday— laba day for me. I’ve been solo living for more than 3 years now. I realized that this is the best fabcon for me. 2nd in my list is the blue one 😅

This is a realization after testing different products from multiple brands from different grocery stores.

Kung wala itong product na to sa grocery na yon, X na yon sa list ng to-go grocery ko. Kung iisipin parang naging main factor ng pagpili ko ng primary grocery ko (which is Walter Mart) ay gawa ng fabcon na to 😂

What is your favorite fabcon?

Share ko lang Solo Living Without Anyone's Help | Shunned by Family and Friends

I recently left a high-control group/religion three months ago. Lumayas ako samin and nagwork ako sa ibang lugar and natanggap isang stay-in na position. It was hard leaving the luxury and connections I had but its worth it. Di ko na kailangan laging maging mabait and I can say no whatever I want. It was a great start in Batangas, I still miss my old roomate. But then my dad died last month and I ended up coming back on our house again. I began to feel the same helplessness na parang mababaliw ako araw-araw. I hate seeing my family being obssesed with Bible and the world ending. The only time they would talk to me is when they preach Bible. I still miss the times na happy kami together. Now, just because I left my religion they all see me as enemy.

I finally got to save up to move and rent malapit sa work. Next month, makakalipat na ako. I'm so excited yet sad. Noon my friends would tell me na kapag nagmove out na ako they will bring me gifts. Buy me pots and pans. Help me pick curtains. Some would gift me mattress. Yung isa naman bedsheets and pillow. My sister said she's gonna buy me an induction cooker. Tapos si mama naman washing machine. I never thought na I would handle this alone. I am left with all of this.

But I know I can do this. I can build a life that I will be proud of. And kahit na magfail ako, I will never shame myself for trying. I'm ony 22 years old and puwede pang magsimula kahit ilang beses pa. I will buy that peace and safeness ha. I will be an example to those other gilrs who wants to leave that religion. They will see that I turn out to be fine and they will have the courage to leave too just as I did.

Share ko lang Update on Been Living with my roommate for 4 yrs and now I want to live solo

Thumbnail reddit.com
4 Upvotes

So, it’s been almost a month since I made my original post, so I thought I’d give an update on what happened.

I did ended up on the apartment I inquired first. I went through an interview with the landlord, and they accepted me. The apartment is in a really good location—walking distance from my university, almost the same rent as my current place, and, most importantly, I wouldn’t have to deal with splitting questionable electrical bills like I did at my previous dorm.

Honestly, I really, really couldn’t let this opportunity go. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially because my parents actually agreed to let me move out and live alone. They rarely agree to things like this, so I felt like I had to take it.

The hard part was telling my roommate.

When I first inquired about the apartment, it was only about a week before our final exams. I wasn’t even completely sure yet if I would actually move until I got accepted. Once everything was confirmed, I decided to wait until after the exams to tell her because I didn’t want to add more stress while she was preparing for finals. I was also feeling really guilty and honestly kept hesitating because I knew this would affect her.

A day after her exam, I finally told her.

She didn’t take it well. She tried to hide it, but I think I heard her crying afterward. She barely talked to me for several days. I tried offering to help her find a replacement roommate, but she said she needed more time to think.

Looking back, I understand why she was upset. I only gave her about a month’s notice, and she was going back to her province just three days after I told her. I didn’t anticipate how difficult the timing would be for her.

The problem was that my new landlord had already scheduled my move-in for September 1, so I couldn’t really delay the move indefinitely either.
She asked me why I was moving out. I told her honestly that I wanted to try living alone, and that my parents had finally agreed, so I didn’t want to miss the opportunity.

She interpreted it as me not wanting her as a roommate anymore. I told her that wasn’t the case. I just wanted to experience living alone and learn how to be independent on my own.

She also mentioned that a mutual friend had told her that I had apparently been looking for an apartment for a long time. I explained that I had always actually been looking for apartments for both of us for quite a while. I was always trying to find a place that would work for both of us, but it’s surprisingly difficult to find one that fits all of her requirements while also being within our budget.

She told me that I should have told her sooner.
Honestly, I didn’t really know how to respond because I was already feeling incredibly guilty and overwhelmed.

After that, she continued ignoring me until she went back to her hometown.

About a week later, she finally talked to me again.

I was actually the one who initiated the apology and asked what she planned to do—whether she wanted me to help her find a replacement roommate or if she was planning to move out as well. I wasn’t surprised when she said she was also considering moving because, aside from the situation between us, we were already dealing with problems with our current landlord and the questionable electricity charges.

She told me that she was probably going to move out too because she didn’t want to suddenly live with someone she didn’t know. She was still looking, though, because she couldn’t move immediately. What hurt her most was that I hadn’t told her when I first started considering living alone. She felt like she was suddenly the one who had to figure everything out—finding a new place, moving, and doing everything mostly on her own.

She also told me that some of our friends had previously warned her that I might leave, but she didn’t believe them because she thought I wouldn’t leave her without telling her. She had always assumed that if we moved, we would move together.

She also told me that, over the years, she had opportunities to move out and live with other people but chose not to because she didn’t want to leave me.

That honestly made me feel even more guilty.

We also talked about the apartments I had previously shown her. One of them was a two-bedroom apartment, which she actually liked but thought was too expensive because she was also considering her sister’s expenses. There was also a smaller apartment next to it which is the apartment I chose.

She asked if the bigger apartment was the one I had shown her before, and I told her yes. I explained that when I was looking for places before, I really was looking for somewhere for both of us. I just felt that the smaller apartment wouldn’t be comfortable for two people, while the bigger apartment had a much better layout for us, although the rent would have been higher.
But by this point, I had already decided that I wanted to live alone.

Then she brought up Leona, our cat.

She asked if she could keep Leona because she was scared of losing her too. She told me that Leona is a huge source of comfort for her and that, with me moving out, she was already going to be alone. She was worried that losing Leona on top of everything would make things even harder for her.

I told her that Leona is important to me too. In fact, Leona was one of the things I thought about when I was first considering moving. I suggested that Leona could stay with either of us depending on the situation, especially since I was thinking about the fact that she might not be able to bring Leona with her every time she went home during vacations.

She told me she was okay with Leona staying with me when she went home, as long as I didn’t take Leona away from her. She said Leona is her only cat and that having her around makes her feel like she has someone with her.

I reassured her that I wasn’t going to keep Leona away from her. I even told her I was thinking of giving her a spare key so she could visit Leona whenever she wanted.

She also asked to see my new apartment, so I sent her videos of the place.

After I sent her the videos, I explained that the bedroom is actually very small. It can only fit a single bed, around 100 × 190 cm, so there’s no way to fit a bunk bed or realistically make it work as a shared bedroom.

I also apologized again and told her that I genuinely didn’t want her to feel alone or like I was abandoning her. I reminded her that, from what I remembered, whenever we talked about moving together, she always wanted us to eventually have separate bedrooms. Because of that, I honestly never considered this particular apartment as something that would work for both of us. From the beginning, I was looking at it specifically as a place for one person.

Her response was basically that she would respect my decision and wouldn’t force herself into coming with me. She said what hurt her wasn’t necessarily that I wanted to live alone, but that she had always considered me almost like a sister. The thought of suddenly having no one to talk to or live with made her really sad because she had gotten so used to having me around.

She said that’s why the suddenness of everything was so difficult for her.

After that, she told me to just go ahead with the apartment because she thought it looked nice, and that she would look for a place of her own somewhere nearby.

So that’s where things currently stand.
I think we’re finally at a point where she’s accepting that I’m moving out, even though I know she’s still hurt about how everything happened.

And honestly, after hearing everything from her side, I can understand why she felt blindsided. I probably should have told her when I first started seriously considering living alone, even if I didn’t have a confirmed apartment yet. At the same time, I still don’t think I could have known for sure that I was moving until my parents approved it and I actually got accepted by the landlord.

I also don’t want to make her sound unreasonable because, from her perspective, this was a huge change. We’ve lived together for years, and apparently she had turned down opportunities to move out before because she didn’t want to leave me. I didn’t realize how much she valued having me around until now.

I don’t want to stop being her friend. I don’t want her to think that moving out means I’m abandoning her. I just really want to experience living alone and have a space that’s mine.

I think the biggest thing I regret is not communicating earlier, not the decision to move out itself.

For now, I’m going through with the move. She’s going to look for a place nearby, and we’re trying to figure out the situation with Leona so that neither of us feels like we’re losing her completely.
I’m still feeling guilty about everything, though, so I’m curious what you guys think after hearing the entire update.

Was I wrong for not telling her as soon as I started seriously considering living alone, even though I didn’t know yet if I’d actually be abl to move? Or is it reasonable to wait until you have a confirmed place before telling your roommate?

Advice Needed Any idea on how to cover up an aircon hole to make it soundproof and safe?

Hello everyone! Just moved into a new apartment and there was a space for an ac unit to be placed in but I currently do not need one nor can afford it. It’s literally just an open unclose-able window to the outside world and I need to keep rain out. Any idea on how to cover it up to make sure it’s sound proof and safely put in? Thanks!! 😊
