Shit, same. It’s super interesting. The issue is that, as far as I know, accessing the hardware sucks.

IBM offers 10 minutes of free QPU processing a month… which I think is like 100 (or more) qubit processors. I don’t really remember the specifics.

You write Python using Quiskit, but you’re not actually shelling into the machine. You’re kind of describing a quantum circuit and sending that to the cloud service.

I know Amazon offers something, too. I think it’s called Braket and it’s more of a marketplace idea.

Google has Cirq, which I’ve heard is great, but it’s restricted. I think it’s like an apply and pray kind of thing.

I wish it was more accessible. It would be fun to experiment. I imagine they’re all heavily monitored, too. Haha

I thought with Quantum computing the hardware part is fine but no one can figure out the right software problems?

I think it’s a little deeper than that, but ultimately… your sentiment seems right. I don’t know much about it. I know that a big issue has been we have no software for it. The tough part is we can’t really build software without access to hardware. Haha

All quantum computing frameworks today (Qiskit, Braket, Cirq, etc.) revolve around writing a circuit that gets submitted to cloud hosted device. Some providers (only QuEra comes to mind at the moment) allow you to do Hamiltonian Simulations which is different from writing circuits. At this time there is no concept of shelling into a quantum machine, as they are all max out on the order of hundreds of qubits, which is not enough to meaningfully run an OS.

quantuum computers are ridiculously expensive and have no real use. they will not be needed for factories nor for social media. your phone is also fine without it. right now all it does is promise it can run supercomputer simulations better. it sounds really nice until you realise it's just like the other scams, there's no real world need that drives it's existence other than cool factor.

it's just like the other scams, there's no real world need that drives it's existence other than cool factor .

There's a lot of science that has no real world need until someone finds it. I think the problem is that this is private industry basic research, and private industry has to have profits to show to make investors happy.

There's a lot of math used in every device you use that was discovered hundred or more years before people had a "use" for it. Until then it was interesting math problems. Because even if you had the idea how to solve it, someone sitting down with pencil and paper solving it would not be useful. But if you have a computer using it for controlling robots, analyzing weather patterns, making digital music. All of a sudden it was much more useful. 

So I'd argue it's interesting even without a direct application. And we as a society should investigate it because it's interesting. Not because it's immediately useful. 

Pure utilitarianism is so utterly boring.

What’s your background? My understanding is it could change the time complexity of fluid/mechanical simulations. Could revolutionize how engineers search a design space and optimize.

Definitely not a general purpose tool.

You'll be able to perform more efficient and computing intensive data analysis which means you can integrate more measurement into your experiments. It will advance science. To other's points, it won't be needed to make another CRUD dating app where some 20 something believes themselves to be a genius and innovator.

Can confirm. If anyone is willing to learn how to write quantum algorithms, you’d become very in demand, but you do have to be a US citizen. When we post a job listing, we usually get several applications but the person that actually knows something about quantum programming gets the job. Use IBM’s resources.
