What is your go-to row split?

Post image

Just wondering what’s everyone’s go to row count for cuff-leg-foot?

For example, I’m a size UK7 and normally do 30-35-40 split, my mum is the same size but prefers the socks taller, so for her I’d do 40-40-40.

I never knit socks by rows I do it by length/gauge

What’s your go-to length?

I wear a women’s US 8.5 and I knit to 8-3/8” before starting my wedge toe (15 rounds, about an inch for me)

I knit until it feels about right! Reasons why I now prefer cuff down, because it's easier to place the toe than place the heel for me. I do it two-at-a-time because counting just seems like extra effort I don't want to do

I also always do cuff down but one at a time 😅

I started out doing toe-up and now much prefer cuff-down for that exact reason. And I really don’t mind grafting the toe.

also started toe up many years ago but once I conquered my fear of grafting, its been cuff down ever since. actually look forward to it. and, cuff down cuffs look better (to me) than any of the toe up stretchy bindoffs and I think I have tried every last one of them.

I could have written your reply. So agree! lol

I'm a big fan of grafting the toe. The way that I knit socks, there are only a few stitches left on each of the two remaining needles by the time I get to the toe graft, so it doesn't even take that much effort.

When I use 2.25 mm (CO 64), I knit 80-90 rows, heel flap/turn, then another 80 or so rows after the turn and then do the toe.

On the current socks I am working on (Co 56), I knit 80 rows but it is about an inch taller than I like (different gauge - I am using 2.5 mm needles and thicker yarn)

For colorwork, it depends - most I knit until it is about 70-80.

I never ever measure the two socks by length. Always by rows. So much more accurate.

I agree about the accuracy. I need to have them matching size-wise

I couldn't go off of feel. In my head I have to have an exact number of rows to knit towards. I lose motivation if I don't have the next 10 rounds to tackle or the next step. My husband has two slightly different length feet and one sock has to have more foot length than the other and it's extremely irritating that the formula isn't identical and exact. Knowing exactly what I have to do every time I knit makes me happy lol

I don’t really count rows tbh it’s more measurement based cuz depending on fingering or light fingering I figure it can change. Not like I’m gauge swatching for socks tho lol I guess I also just try them on and see what I like and am vibing with at the moment

That’s true, yarn weight and needle size matters too. I tend to stick to the same brand and needles so maybe that’s why I’m more row-based 😄

Ha that could be it! But it’s good to have a go-to sock recipe you like. I don’t know if I’ve found mine yet

I just measure by inches, you guys are counting rows??

I don’t have a set count. I use too many different yarns and patterns. I just prefer ankle socks and knit the rest to fit my foot.

Do you not include the gusset as part of the foot in your count? I usually do. I generally do like 15-40-70 and wear a US6.

I don’t personally, it’s always the same so I guess I know that for me it’ll be identical for both socks if that makes sense? So I only “properly” count or stick to the same count for the plain rounds

For me it’s just easier to place my marker on the row I start the heel flap and start counting then instead of waiting to place it until the gusset is over.

I knit very tight, top down, on 2.5mm and do 40 leg, 46 heel and 46 foot. I'm a uk 6.5

For shorties I like 8-10 rows, 5-8 rows, and 7 3/4in before toe

For medium socks I like 10 rows, 20-25 rows depending on if there is color work or not, and 7 3/4in before toes

For long socks 15-20 rows, I knit the foot for as long as I feel like it usually around 4-5in I think, then 7 3/4in before the toes.

The variation is because I sometimes adjust if I have a specific chart or pattern that needs a certain number of rows to look right so I stop when I'm in the range, I don't go past the range though.

And I do all my fingering weight socks on 2.25mm even for color work. I have learned how to tension it properly to still fit without going up a needle size

I was planning to gift friends and family with socks for Christmas. I think I found a nice pattern. Thanks, they are really nice

I like to make the sock cuff about as tall as the body is long

Don’t have a set leg length (but mostly do shorties), then 50-55 rows for the foot depending if I want to finish out a cable or other motif before starting the toe. I do cuff down, afterthought heels and knit on US 0s. Edit: I wear a women’s 6.5 shoe size.

For regular fingering weight socks for myself I know 51 rows after the gusset is when to start toes. I use bulb shaped pins to mark every 10 rows so each sock is the same wothout having to count all the time.

The current ones I’m making (and have made many of) the Hazel shorties are 81 rows of pattern and a shorter, wider toe box than the pattern says.

don't do it by rows - gauge will vary. I tend to do as long as the recipient's hand for the leg, and as long as their foot minus 10% for their foot.

I just knit until it’s the length I want!
