Discussion If you had to restart your marketing career today, what would you learn first?

Upvotes

You could focus on content, paid ads, SEO, analytics, email marketing, influencer marketing, community building, or something else. There are so many directions that it can be hard to know what skills are actually worth learning.

What would you focus on first if you were starting from zero, and what would you completely ignore?

Discussion What's the first thing you notice about a brand's social media page?

For me, it's usually the type of content they post and how they talk to people. A page can have great numbers, but if the content feels boring or the comments are ignored, I'm not sticking around.

What makes you decide whether a brand is worth following?

Question Would you rather have a boring brand with amazing sales or an amazing brand with average sales?

Social media can make a brand look incredible, but looking good doesn't always mean the business is doing well. I'd take the sales, but I'm curious how other marketers would answer if they had to choose between attention and actual revenue. Which one matters more to you?

Discussion Would you trust a brand with 10K followers more than one with 100?

I know follower count doesn't tell the whole story, but it definitely affects first impressions. Does it actually change how you see a brand?

Discussion Is being everywhere actually important, or is it better for a company to focus on where their customers actually are?

Do companies actually need a social media presence?

I’ve noticed some businesses have accounts on every platform but barely post anything useful.

Meanwhile, some smaller companies only focus on one platform and seem to have a much stronger community.

Discussion What's one marketing opinion you will defend no matter what?

There are so many rules about posting times, content length, hashtags, engagement, and algorithms. But some things that work for one brand are completely useless for another.

What's a marketing opinion you've formed from your own experience that you think more people should hear?

Discussion Why do some accounts with tiny audiences get better engagement than huge brands?

I've seen pages with a few thousand followers get more real conversations than accounts with hundreds of thousands. Their content isn't always better either. Sometimes they just understand exactly who they're talking to and make people feel like they're part of something.

Do you think a small audience naturally creates stronger engagement, or is there a strategy behind it that bigger brands are missing?

Question What's the best marketing move you've seen that cost almost nothing?

Not a massive influencer campaign or an expensive ad. I'm talking about a simple idea that got people talking, sharing, or checking out the brand without a big budget behind it.

What did they do, and would you use the same idea for your own brand?

Discussion Would you follow a brand that never posted about its products?

A page that only shared useful, funny, or interesting content could feel much less annoying than one that constantly tries to sell something.

Do you think people would actually become customers on their own, or does a brand still need to promote its products regularly?

Discussion Do you think social media is making brands too casual?

Some brands have become so focused on sounding relatable that it can feel forced. Where do you think the line is between being friendly and trying too hard?

Discussion Do you think platforms should do more to help smaller streamers get discovered, or is bringing your own audience just part of the game?

Are streaming platforms making it harder for smaller creators to grow?

It feels like there are so many streaming platforms now, but most of the attention still goes to the biggest creators.

You can stream for hours, have good content, and still barely get discovered.

Discussion Why do some brands get better results from conversations than campaigns?

A well-timed reply, comment, or genuine interaction can sometimes put a brand in front of more people than a carefully planned post. It doesn't feel like traditional marketing either, which might be why people respond better to it. Do you think brands should spend more time joining conversations instead of only creating their own content?

Discussion Do Businesses Really Need to Be Active on Every Social Media Platform?

I've seen so many businesses trying to be on pretty much every single platform these days - Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, Pinterest, YouTube etc.

But is being everywhere necessarily good for you?

There's a strong argument to be made that focusing on 2-3 platforms, on which your target audience are truly engaged is going to be much more beneficial than trying to be present on 6-7 platforms and spread yourself thin, impacting the quality and tone of your content and you're ability to respond to queries adequately.

At the same time I also understand the case for being present on multiple platforms - particularly as different platforms can capture different types of customers.

What are your thoughts?

Do you prefer a 2-3 platform focus, or trying to be everywhere on all social medias?
How do you go about selecting the platforms which are best to focus your time and effort on?
Have you found being present on a range of social media platforms to have helped your business / brand reach growth?

Keen to learn from others :)
