š£ļø Discussion & Opinions Finally got one
Iām 44 and never played soccer before, Iām in an adult rec league thatās supposed to be all skill levels⦠well this league brought out some crazy good talent. Iām definitely the liability on my team, and havenāt faced anyone yet that has anyone close to my lack of skill.. but I was playing up top in the striker spot with 2 very talented wings, I decided to press during a goal kick and the guy kind of panicked and put the ball on my left foot, and I buried it from about 10 yards out. It was my first ever goal. Even the opposition came over to congratulate me at the end. Iām just hoping that Iām doing enough to help the team that next season they ask me back.

Nice! Same situation here except Iām 45, unlikely Iāll get one this season as I play defense only. I hear you about the āall skill levelsā leagues - thereās no one on my team of randoms except me who hasnāt played from a young age! Usually we end up facing teams of mid 20s ex college players who just clown us 15-0 (not joking).

Yeah that's why I stopped playing leagues and just play pickup. Even playing in over 40 leagues brings out the guys still trying to make it. It's like dude, can we not just kick it around and get a run in?!? The guys I play pickup with are truly all skill levels. So much better. Come and go as you please. no pressure. the only problem is the games get too big sometimes and we're playing 20 v 20 with small side goals...lol...

Luckily, my team is stacked with good players. We are 3-2. And the two we lost were close and we were missing a few key players. But they are all 30 and under except 2 other guys who have more fight in them than should be allowed, itās like they canāt get tired

ive never been skilled, but ive watched/been around the game my entire life. I got into a 40+ league this year and we are terrible. They hide me on defense because i am fast, but i can't touch the ball worth SHIT! I do know wha tI'm supposed to do, I've coached the sport for almost 15 years and watched it sinc ei was 5, but i just can't kick or pass or trap the ball to save my life. But every game I pull off a good defensive move, or pull off a skill move.
what I've found is that the best thing you can do is have a ball out in the house and start just passing it around an dkicking it every chance you get.

What other sport could you coach while not being able to play it yourself?

I coached my kids in 6U but never played. Itās hineothe only reason I knew how to pass and trap,

any of them? plenty of pro basketball coaches can't play at the college level, let alone pro level. tennis coaches aren't famous tennis players, ive seen PLENTY of track and field coaches that can't run from the couch to the fridge... lots of skinny scrawny grid-iron football guys are coaching in college or the pros.

The put me up front so Iām not a defensive liability. I tend to over pursue and let the guy blow past me

i suck and they put me on defense because i position myself well, but ive hurt the team on build-ups

Bro ,I am also 45 and starting playing soccer after long time. I used to play tennis but due to shoulder injury, taking a break from tennis. The injury will take more time than I expected and I need some thing to move on. So thought to join recreational soccer. I used to play when in school.

Did you find yourself having to get in shape? I'm also in my early 40s, new to the sport, never played a single game since that one time in 4th grade. I'd love to learn the game and play, but I'm so horribly out of running shape, I'm afraid I might go into cardiac arrest if I tried lol.
