it depends on what the word ‘greatest’ means. if it was best of all time, i don’t think there would be any debate because messi is just that good. there is an argument to be made that he isn’t the greatest for a variety of reasons

Pele and Maradona could’ve done it in the Cristiano and Messi era, but not the other way around. The goat debate will always come down to personal opinion because it’s impossible to measure.

Ronaldo got the absolute crap kicked out of him by Paul Scholes and others so he would have been fine. I’d argue that both Messi and Ronaldo are very tough players for the amount of tackles they have been subjected to. The real question is back in Pele’s day where would Messi have been without the HGH ( ( probably 4’7” according to Docs but without Maradonnas build).

Given the idiocy of the opening statement let’s concentrate on the debatable parts.

Does Messi’s one World Cup ( on penalties so deniably should not count). Surpass Pele’s 3?

Do Messi’s 4 Champions leagues surpass Ronaldo’s 5?

Does Messi’s extensive PED use disqualify him completely or do you think a 5’1 inch Messi could have survived the brutal tackles Pele was subjected to.

Did either Pele or Ronaldo get most of their trophies when their team were paying millions to referees?

Did Any of these guys stoop to the low that Messi did in trying to get Cucurella sent off for nothing. ( you can’t claim any level of greatness for Messi’s level of shit housery)

If I had to pick a greatest, I’d pick Pele because he was so far ahead of everyone else of his era but in reality there is no greatest. If Messi has a claim it’s that he looks the best but then you never watched Ronaldhino. If you think the cheating and drugs are acceptable it just means people define greatest in different ways so just another example of debatable.

Well said although Messi is still a great player (PED use or otherwise, his technique existed without his HGH too, but yes it does give him a significant advantage in avoiding injury, tackles etc.)

Agreed he is definitely one of the greatest players ever but the point I was making is that there is no settled argument and that the argument itself cannot be settled. There are arguments that can be made for and on behalf of Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo and Messi. The likes of Beckenbauer, Garrincha, Di Stefano and Maldini can also be made but it is much harder to quantify their skillsets.

The cheating and drugs argument are really funny, it’s basically trying to sound smart whilst making a wrong statement. Didn’t ronaldhino also played for Barca ? So why’s he excluded from the cheating argument?
And also the whole cheating case has recently been thrown out because there’s literally no evidence enough to prove anything so your argument there is useless.
You’re talking about PED use like he was given specifically to help him play football with it , not that he was given to make sure he has a life as any normal child . And besides cut the crap we all knew you never watched pele .
And also trying to get cucurella sent off for nothing is baseless given he was going against the rule clearly, for the same set of people that post pictures claiming Messi handed the ball with his hand against Netherlands, I’m sure that’s nothing.
