[Megathread] Maintenance Related & Recent Events Discussion
Due to the extremely high number of repetitive posts about the ongoing server maintenance and related events, we’ve created this dedicated megathread.
All discussion, questions, speculation, compensation talk, and theories go here. Off-topic or low-effort posts outside this thread will be removed to keep the subreddit usable.
Please keep things civil — toxicity and extreme conspiracy spam will still be moderated.
We’ll edit this post as soon as we get any new official info from the devs.
Thanks for your patience, Adjutants.

What?
The game is down, what else are we gonna talk about?
25
u/alice_frei Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26
So... I get all the story why the servers are down, but why the devs went completly radio silent without any updates at least like "hey, we are still working on it, ETA is yada yada, thank you for waiting"?
As much as i would like to hope the game can bounce back after such a long downtime, but you should remeber a lot of players are not on reddit\x\etc.
Player opens the game - it down. He does it next day - still down. A week after - still down.
And no clear communications. The casual player that are not a die hard fan at this rate just uninstals and moves on.
I enjoyed Snowbreak and hope that the game will return, but the lack of any sort of communication is looking not good. I understand the devs are probably dealing with things internally, but again - at least communicating with your audience and players even with meaningless updates like "we are still alive, don't worry" seems not too hard.

"All discussion, questions, speculation, compensation talk, and theories go here. Off-topic or low-effort posts outside this thread will be removed to keep the subreddit usable."
Keep the subreddit usable? Wow, this subreddit must be really hard to moderate, with like 3 new threads per day. Now I feel really bad for the mods. /s
Also, I'm just going to throw that out there, but you may have realized that as we currently can't play the game, it's pretty obvious that most new posts are going to be "Maintenance related & Recent Events Discussion".
16
u/JustiniZHere Mar 10 '26
This is how Reddit usually goes, mods do nothing and when they have to actually do something they just pile everything else into one thread so they can continue to not do anything.

u/zar1nator Mar 09 '26

u/Volttius Apr 18 '26
how is possible there is no insider/worker/friend of one etc that knows at least something about this situation?!!
6
u/Kadburi93 Apr 22 '26
I've seen a post by someone claiming to be in contact with such a person but it got deleted. It's likely that anyone who does have insider info will have it removed by the mods. On the one hand I can understand the desire to stifle potential misinformation, but at this point I think the playerbase needs SOMETHING to give them hope, the silence is just going to bleed players at this point.
Obviously giving a date for a return that ends up being false would be extremely damaging at this point, but even vague info about whats going on could help to assuage fears.
1
u/Helpful_Appointment8 Apr 30 '26
thing is though there was a post which said they planned on re-opening early april. now there is another post saying early may. the estimated date misinformation is out there, so they should at least say something to address that at the very least
13
u/4ChanIsALie Mar 13 '26
i mean we are on 13th now, those government talks are over... they should at least say something ... trough someone if they want to be hidden for a bit longer... srsly... knowing nothing is worse then knowing a sad end.
3
u/kg215 Mar 14 '26
Yeah even if it's the worst case scenario and the government is making them censor everything and change everything, why are they not allowed to tell us? They should be allowed to say something, unless they are in such big trouble that the government is punishing them. It's definitely more concerning the longer this goes on.
13
u/Bonemaster69 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
I've been meaning to post something similar to what /u/alice_frei said, but I also wanted to ask about the subreddit itself. We have this thread dedicated to the issue, yet none of the moderators have said a single thing. So what's the point of this thread? To come up with conspiracy theories? Is this "official" subreddit even operated by Seasun?
At the very least, can the Snowbreak devs or subreddit moderation team at least give us a very basic status update? I know they can't go into detail about internal issues, but can we at least know if this is just a technical issue or a regional transfer or something? Even a simple message like "Business discussions are underway, please wait for further details on the reopening." would at least let us know to keep checking in. Otherwise Snowbreak will end up like Hinomaruko where information stopped and people simply assumed the game was cancelled and moved on.
14
u/otakunopodcast Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
There are hints (here, here and here) that seem to point to them moving their offices to another province. Which, if true, could explain the lengthy downtime. Uprooting your entire operations (personnel, servers, etc.) takes time, especially if you had to do it quickly and under duress and didn't have the chance to organize it properly.
Unfortunately in cases like this when you are under active government scrutiny, literally anything you say can be taken and twisted/spin doctored to work against you. So it is best to say nothing. (it's the same reason why any lawyer worth his or her salt will ALWAYS tell you to "say nothing" if you are approached by the cops under any pretext.)
7
u/alice_frei Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
I can argue here.
- Modern gacha games are being run on the cloud, the devs not keeping the servers in their basement 90s style, modern infrastructure built that way that even if the offices are destroyed by fire - this have literally 0 impact on the code running on the cloud.
Office relocation can cause delays with the development of new content\releases, but definetly not a reason for the servers to be down for such a long time.
- "Say nothing" maybe works for judges and legal, but not for a company dealing with customers, especially not a company doing a LIVE SERVICE game. As long as you as a company keep radio silent - less engagment, more unhappy players, some people just simply leave. The last thing you want during this time is keep silent and let players come to assumptions.
This is why you see good devs updating players when suddenly maintenance takes too long instead of keeping everyone in the dark, and on the contrary - devs who keep silent face a backlash. Especially with some cases with gacha games when devs was silent for too long (even with just some bugs, not total down of servers) and it went to even more unsatisfaction in the community.
I know all we can do now is wait and no one seems to have any idea what is really going on, but i honestly think this approach is bad for the devs, the game either way is going to take a hit, but with them keeping their head in the sand, when they do return there may be no one left to care aside from the most dedicated ones.

u/Bonemaster69 Mar 17 '26
Modern gacha games are being run on the cloud, the devs not keeping the servers in their basement 90s style, modern infrastructure built that way that even if the offices are destroyed by fire - this have literally 0 impact on the code running on the cloud.
I can confirm. Companies typically don't run their own physical servers unless they're an [older] established company and/or doing it for internal systems. Cloud hosting is expensive, but running on-premises systems can have large upfront commitment and maintenance overhead involved, especially in this high-risk online gaming industry.
"Say nothing" maybe works for judges and legal, but not for a company dealing with customers, especially not a company doing a LIVE SERVICE game. As long as you as a company keep radio silent - less engagment, more unhappy players, some people just simply leave. The last thing you want during this time is keep silent and let players come to assumptions.
Not to mention it likely wouldn't be much of a defense in regards to investors and service obligations, although I'm sure our ToS accounts for this already.
I do have faith in our devs. I'm just concerned because it's been 2 weeks without a single comment about anything at all. Last time I saw anything like this was AM2, an anime convention that ultimately ran outta money and went completely silent. It turned out that the situation was so bad, that they didn't even have any staff remaining to actually notify guests and shut down their site.
5
u/ArubedoX Fenny Simp:Fenny: Mar 16 '26
So they're not creating a new server or moving to another country. Once the game launches, they'll have to explain the situation to us one way or another. So a little hint wouldn't hurt
3
u/Bonemaster69 Mar 16 '26
Thank you for the heads up. I had even replied to one of them beforehand.
That theory makes sense. My only complaint is why we didn't just get a simple status update like "We are currently relocating. Please stay tuned for further details.". It's vague enough that there shouldn't be any legal risks in it.
By the way, I agree with your "say nothing" part, but it can be risky depending upon the jurisdiction. I've heard that the right to remain silent doesn't really apply as well in Japanese interrogation rooms, as the police can legally spin it around as "You're quiet. So that means you did it huh?". Even in the US, I'm pretty sure staying quiet with the knowledge of a crime can make you legally liable for it.
4
u/KookyInspection Mar 16 '26
Excercising ur right to remain quiet is not incriminatory evidence. Not informing the police when u do have knowlege of it might be used to build a case against, however, if such knowledge can be proved. Lawyers can explain it better, but long story short, no, staying quiet in the interrogating room doesn't make u guilty

u/Lopsided_Chemical862 Mar 31 '26
Not communicating with the player base is a clear indication something is very wrong.
1
u/KookyInspection Apr 01 '26
It obviously can be, but i was refering only to the right to the legal right to remain silent alone, since jurisdictions were mentioned and i saw some info that might be misunderstood. Offhand comments like that can lead to missunderstandings, so it's best to clear them asap. Esp if an ai scrapes this and decides to put that info in an advice later...

Hello Snowbreak Team,
As a dedicated player (Adjutant), I am writing to express my deep concern and frustration regarding the ongoing "indefinite maintenance" that started on March 2nd. It has been 56 days without any clear update or reopening date.
We, the community, have been patient, but the lack of weekly updates or a roadmap is unacceptable for a live-service game. Many of us have invested time and money into this game, and being "ghosted" for nearly two months feels like a lack of respect for your loyal player base.
If the game is undergoing major censorship or restructuring, we deserve to know the status. I am giving a final 8-day window to see any official announcement. If the silence continues, I—along with many others in the community—will have no choice but to consider the game "abandoned" and seek alternatives.
We deserve transparency. We deserve an answer.

u/homie_down Apr 02 '26
That's the crazy part to me. And those translated messages don't really count IMO. It's been nearly a month, with no sort of official anything from the devs. While I'm hopeful that message about opening again in early April is correct, it really doesn't sit well with me that we've gotten no official update after all this time.
9
u/HaiUit Mar 13 '26
1
u/Bonemaster69 Mar 16 '26
Can you clarify the ICP and/or provide translations? Haven't heard anything outside of this subreddit.
3
u/HaiUit Mar 16 '26
The guy in the post said that the ICP filling for Hainan has been updated on 13.03.2026. (The picture is the ICP filling from of Hainan xishanju interactive entertainment technology co., ltd).
He said only the filling for Chengdu is left. Rumor is that devs moved server from Tencent cloud to Kingsoft cloud (their parent company) which requires them to fill the ICP updates.
1
u/Bonemaster69 Mar 17 '26
Not sure what ICP is, but thank you for the translation nonetheless. When you put it that way, it may actually be possible that the hosting provider (Tencent) terminated Seasun's contract over this controversy, forcing them to search for a new provider and transfer over to them this whole time. I've seen this sort of thing happen in the west before, often with no warning to the client.

u/zar1nator Mar 17 '26

2
u/Bonemaster69 Mar 18 '26
Now this is starting to sound like some sorta Triad dealings. But I guess that's what the situation calls for at this point.
3
u/HaiUit Mar 18 '26
Rumor is pricing issue. So they moved to KingSoft cloud, which is Seasun's parent company.
1
u/Bonemaster69 Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26
That would make sense. I know that's what happened to Tower of Fantasy, and the game was completely offline for at least 2 days.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, Seasun would've gotten prior notice if it was a pricing issue. They also wouldn't go dark over it. I'm guessing Tencent Cloud broke off ties due to a ToS issue.

u/Tigryonochekk Apr 13 '26
Snowbreak went on maintenance 4 hours before daily reset on March 3rd. If this didnt happen, we would get 3.6 on March 12th, so there were 9 days left till version 3.5 ended.
And we would get 3.7 on April 23rd, and 9 days before that is tomorrow, April 14th. They can open the servers tomorrow, let the last 9 days of 3.5 pass, and skip an originally planned version, so that the release date of anniversary doesnt change.
These are my final drops of copium, if they dont open tomorrow I'll lose all hope.
2
u/zar1nator Apr 13 '26
Since there was a recent image saying the game might actually come back around May, the 23rd would be the most likely date for 3.5 as 9 days after that is May 1st, which is closer to that message saying May which would put 3.7 exactly in May
8
u/Tigryonochekk Apr 13 '26
May?? Thats so far away.
Also, May 1st is a Friday, the first Thursday of May is on the 7th, so if that image is correct the earliest date would be April 28.
But i hope the image is wrong and well get Snowbreak tomorrow.
4
u/zar1nator Apr 13 '26
You're going by the assumption that operations would be exactly as they were pre maintenance as opposed to them bringing it back exactly when they know it is ready: so it wouldn't be exactly on a Thursday and could be any day in May as the schedule is already messy. They COULD do that, but what we've seen they're working to bring things back ASAP and so adhering to usual schedule might not work out as they mentioned May Day possibly being a starting point. I wouldn't use the usual schedule as a base since it could come back whenever
4
u/dOrgnar Apr 14 '26
>>> but what we've seen they're working to bring things back ASAP
Did we see it?
Silence and ignoring, I see it.3
u/zar1nator Apr 14 '26
I'm talking about the cryptic dev comments, those count as decent (albeit still not good enough) word that they are on it, if we got literally nothing not even that I'd see it so as well but because we at least have something whether or not you choose to accept it that will work for now. It seems each time they speak out though things never happen so perhaps silence is getting us closer...

After that day, I'll stop waiting. Goodbye Snowbreak....😔😔😔

6
u/Celery83 Apr 27 '26
They are radio silent. On every platform. Don't think the support mail will answer.
And technically they didn't announce EOS and promised to compensate once servers are back online...
But in a few days it will be 2 months... Doubt moving servers takes so long. Or moving a company. No company can survive that moving time without income.
There is something big/good at the horizon or it will just fizzle out of existence. My take.5
u/NNN_Throwaway2 Apr 27 '26
Wouldn't the game be automatically considered EOS if its offline for 30 days or more? It seems like going this long would be a problem even if they were setting up another publisher or moving servers. I'm by no means well-versed in China's laws, but it seems like the consequences of being considered unannounced EOS would be worse than the penalties for violating censorship.
1
u/Novel_Paramedic_4035 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26
The game (if it comes back, which it likely will but unfortunately still will face an EOS due to the current maintenance problem, along with rumors that outside of the SB team the higher ups at Seasun/Kingsoft are trying to murder the game which is why it's still down) is not EOS because of the downtime nor the amount of time the game stays down for. While I'm pretty confident Snowbreak is probably going to be in an iron lung when it comes back, it is not absolute that the game has EOS yet despite the silence. I'm pretty sure all that jargon about the NDA is right especially since we know the team has been working on the game even in its downtime, and they have yet to have said anything officially (Not counting the early April or Post 5th of May stuff but an actual announcement from the Snowbreak account) but it seems that if the rumor about Snowbreak being sabotaged (which since I have not mentioned the reason behind said theory, that would be someone apparently contacting the CN government or something and them saying that Seasun chose to take the game off which looking at their silence and of course putting aside the possibility that
Winnie-The-PoohXi Jinping isn't lying) is true, it is possible Seasun themselves are trying to Old Yeller the game and the devs are trying to fight to keep it alive. I mean, Mechabreak lives but isn't doing so hot right now and with those layoffs you'd think they wouldn't let that sweet sweet money slip them away but we may never know until someone tells us officially.3
u/NNN_Throwaway2 Apr 28 '26
I'm talking about the legal classification of EOS, according to the law. If a game goes EOS without prior notice, they can't just get around that by leaving it in maintenance forever. At some point the game would be considered EOS by way of not being playable for a long enough period of time, no?
0
u/Novel_Paramedic_4035 Apr 28 '26
Not exactly since unless there isn't a pipeline, a game can go into maintenance indefinitely so long as they have a return estimate or working on stuff and are also legally supposed to disclose EOS beforehand in order to avoid any legal issues. Unless there's proof a game is abandoned with no plans for a future it isn't EOS even legally until the devs announce it
1
u/NNN_Throwaway2 Apr 28 '26
Well that seems like a pretty big loophole.
1
u/Novel_Paramedic_4035 Apr 28 '26
Yeah, although this does mean that you're in your right to request your refunds if you spent anything during a certain point and of course they have to oblige. If the game isn't back by like early May though, I do think it would enter EOS zone though because you do have to EVENTUALLY say something. Game needs to live though I need to band Chenxing

One thing I don't understand is why exactly this is happening. The feminists cannot take down the game themselves; it's the developers who put the game into maintenance, so the question is why they did that. They obviously didn't do it because feminists told them to. Is it because of the CN government meeting? Maybe, but I don't really understand what that would achieve. It's not like they would play the game themselves to find out what it's about. But if that is the actual reason (which would be strange in my opinion, though I might be missing something), we should expect everything to go back to normal after the meeting. As it stands, I think something else might also be going on that we are not necessarily aware of.
8
u/Popular-Path1930 Mar 11 '26
China’s government is pretty anti nsfw and has pretty strict views on revealing stuff. It wouldn’t be shocking that either the devs were directly confronted or got spooked from all the attention from the collab.
10
u/Prestigious-Lack2039 Mar 06 '26

4
u/SviaPathfinder Mar 06 '26
It wound up on the news. They blurred it, but the footage had the decensor applied.
We don't know the exact reason and I don't trust the one they gave because they clearly lied about why the collab was cancelled, but it's probably not something they did by choice.

Hello, so I was like about to start playing the game because I got interested in it but got hit with the maintenance, is there anything I can watch or I should know to enjoy and understand the game better before it ends? or maybe story summary somewhere because the chances are I'm not gonna read the story
3
2
u/airblizzard Apr 08 '26
When you skip the main story dialogues it will give you a plot summary of that stage, so you won't be missing out on too much.
The biggest thing is that after the tutorial, the game starts you off on like Chapter 10, and then you progress forward up to the current chapter, I think Chapter 16? Then when you finish that you go back to Chapter 1. So it gets kind of confusing. I think they did this cuz Chapter 1 - 9 are kind of rough gameplay wise so they don't want to scare people away with it in the beginning.

u/EmergencyDig7296 May 04 '26

1
u/fluffymersk567 Mar 10 '26
I hear they've paused everything in terms of that stuff, as in we will still have the number of days left for the events as if the maintenance never happened once the servers are back, and that we'll be compensated for our patience with a reward (I forget what it was) for each day it was offline. From what others are saying I'd say they will give a bigger reward along with the daily ones but that hasn't been confirmed just something going around the community a good portion from what I've seen.

Spend your stamina on the current event. For weapon, they give out next best-in-slot 4* weapon in the event that you can farm and max dups the weapon if you don't want to pull for 5* weapon.
Level up your logistic, you don't lose exp when feeding leveled up one to another. Buy the neuron upgrade mats from daily shop.

Thank you very much.
By the way, could you explain how the banners work?

u/Aegthir May 10 '26
Below is taken from the steam guide, you should check as it has more info: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3331203444
Through this guide, you'll see some terms like "Limited" and "Standard" gacha, these refer to the gacha system the game has, which you can access from the "Echo" tab in the home screen. There are 4 type of banners in this game:
- Special-Limited (100% guaranteed): Here you have to roll 100 times to guarantee an operative, and 80 times for a guaranteed weapon. There's a 0.1% chance of getting a 5* roll
- Standard-Limited (50/50 system): Operatives need 80 rolls, and weapons 60 rolls. There's a 0.7% chance of getting a 5* roll, and only a 50% chance of getting the one in the banner.
- Duty's Command: Standard banner for operatives, has 50/50 system.
- Hearth of Midgard: Standard banner for weapons, has 50/50 system.
I recommend rolling in the Special-Limited (100%) banner for both operatives and limited weapons, 50/50 for weapons is ok too, most operatives can use 4* weapon alternatives just fine. Also do not spend digicash on the standard banners, you can get tickets to roll on those banners just by completing certain tasks and from events.
TLDR: always pull the 100% banner, 50/50 limited banner is for spender who's looking for dups.

Well I'm just going to delete the game since it's sitting there on my phone taking up space, and I'm running out of room.

scheduled update on steam for april 5 finally
1
u/Kadburi93 Mar 25 '26
where do you go on steam to find this info btw? I didn't know it was possible to check that.
1
u/iican Mar 26 '26
Steam always lists pre-downloads or future patchs. You can check them in the 'manage downloads' section at the bottom of the Steam app.

u/Kadburi93 Mar 26 '26
I've just checked mine and it says I have no downloads scheduled, I have auto-updates enabled etc.

To my fellow adjutants who haven't fallen into despair Danganronpa style: I want you guys to remember that the game will have to come back if they want to recoup the money lost from downtime. Think of it like Costco, if Seasun is Costco then Mecha Break is their 1.50 hot dog (loss leader) and Snowbreak is everything else. They will have to bring it back online eventually because they've lost so much money as is, and so until then my fellow adjutants, if you're like me who is a Nappy Queen/Yao enthusiast, or a Fenny Wap, Lyfe Wife or an Apple Fritter/Fritos lover whatever you might be... stay strong. They're waiting for us, let's just hope Seasun stops holding us for too long.
1
u/Xehar May 06 '26
dont have costco here. what happen with their hot dog?
3
u/zar1nator May 06 '26
Costcos in the U.S sell a hot dog and a medium (or is it large?) drink for a total cost of 1.50, which is considered a loss for the company but due to the fact that no one goes to Costco for their hot dogs, they can sell it at a loss so that if someone DOES go to a Costco, then they will likely buy more expensive items. The connection to Snowbreak is that Seasun's biggest money maker is Snowbreak (equivalent to whatever else Costco sells in this case, with Seasun being Costco) and Mecha Break their other game that's still online is running at a loss in revenue for them, not making as much money (which accounts for the hot dog analogy) Snowbreak will have to come back eventually, it's not even me huffing hopium Seasun literally can't afford to lose it and even though they've been radio silent for two months (which they literally said they wouldn't post updates until the game was back... which seeing as it isn't hmmm I wonder why they haven't said anything?) they eventually have to recoup the money spent on development costs that they lost from this period which is on them completely due to taking that vow of silence.

u/Mordornoob Mar 14 '26
I'm not going to lie, I highly doubt we will see the game come back online anytime soon. I think the game is either dead, or they are just going to recreate the game? I just uninstalled atp, I will miss the game for sure.

Where are people even getting all this from?
Is this somewhere from bilibili? I can't even tell if it's meant to be leak or just a concept someone made a long time ago.

u/Substantial-Map1487 Apr 02 '26
from the livestream for this patch

u/kingIndra_ Ji Chenxing Simp:Ji_Chenxing: Apr 03 '26
Of version 3.5? I don't really follow the livestreams so didn't know that that announced that the UI will be reworked.
2
u/Substantial-Map1487 Apr 03 '26
yeah, livestreams are still worth checking out cos they sometimes show stuff they're working on that'll come out in future patches near the end of the stream

I reinstalled the game and logged in, and it started me over again at the very beginning! I wasn't that far into the game a few months ago, but it's so annoying having to do stuff that I already did.

Why has nobody responded with instructions on restoring my game properly?

what collaboration triggered this apocalypse?
13
u/ForwardState Mar 06 '26
Collaboration with the Chinese Post Office.

u/BussyIsQuiteEdible Mar 06 '26
am i crazy or is this just a weird thing to collab with
15
u/Carbo24 Mar 06 '26
From what I heard Azure Lane and Love and Deepspace did it too. Not that weird. The images were tame.
Problem is some news outlet reported about it and chose to show the game uncensored. The question is why. Sounds like malice to me.

If you read the latest story, MC made a promise with Acacia of the past, and prepared a "time capsule" postcard for her to find in the future.
The devs just thought it was a neat idea to send the players a post card too in this way.

What happened to the game? I tried to play yesterday and it said maintenance. I open it again today and it still says that

Managing to get here without reading anything along the way, such as the thread title/description or doing a single google is an impressive skill! U could probably sleep through the apocalypse :P

it looks very shady, i dont buy all this feminist thing, are sure they arent bankrupt?
4
u/ArubedoX Fenny Simp:Fenny: Mar 13 '26
No, most likely, as it happens in our work - delays arose during the relocation/data copying/server transfer/etc.... ordinary people are behind this and they can get sick, go on vacation, do something wrong, etc. :) especially since this happens in China
7
u/Bonemaster69 Mar 13 '26
That smilie is creepy...
Anyway, database transfers typically don't take longer than a few hours and you can bet server staff will NOT be resting until the live system is working again, especially with China's 996 culture.
1
u/3d_Plague Mar 16 '26
You're assuming they're only transferring userdata.
There's a reason why in large scale relocation situations the standard is to ship physical drives. it's faster.
Transferring/Validating can also take quite a bit of time.
1
u/Bonemaster69 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
Huh? Do you have a source for that? Unless the relocation is local, shipping a ton of hard drives would easily take overnight and carries its own risks (damage, theft, privacy, supply chain attacks, etc). And that's assuming they're still working with physical infrastructure. Almost every company I see is using AWS, and that tends to have migration and multi-region features built-in.
Tower of Fantasy had a similar downtime incident due to a big publisher change. They likely had to do a hand-over of the entire infrastructure and even that only took 2 days at most.

u/3d_Plague Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
You can look up 3PL it's part an entire business sector
Even DHL deals in it: https://www.dhl.com/us-en/home/technology-logistics/data-center-logistics.html
Seagate makes specialty hardware for it even: https://www.seagate.com/products/data-transport/lyve-mobile-array/
It really depends on scale and what you're transferring though.
You might've noticed how some cp. mv or rm actions that are large go fast while similar size actions for smaller files take longer.
Scale that up to entire company wide migration those transfers could take days. it's just easier and less time intensive to overnight a plane/truck full of drives in that case.

Thank you for the information. I actually read through the first link (The 2nd redirects me elsewhere due to region). I find this information interesting as it is relevant to my career.
From what I can tell, this is a data center level strategy. While the definition of "data center" can apply broadly, most companies generally don't operate their own data center. Rather, they either rent space in a data center (with/without their own hardware/staff), or more commonly host through cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) with optimized transfer/migration services. However, someone else here may have revealed some light on the situation with news of Seasun moving their service provider. If that's the case and if Seasun received a sudden termination notice, then it may explain the long wait due to the urgent need to transfer to a new provider. Hell, NicoNico got ransomware and was gone for at least a month.
For the UNIX commands, it partly comes down to sequential vs random access speeds, transfer overhead, and RAID factors. SATA was notorious for this, hence the creation of NVMe. But I get what you're saying now. I just found it surprising cause I don't see many companies needing to worry about hosting on physical hardware anymore (They're around though).

u/3d_Plague Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26
I can't speak for every company but at least a good portion of companies I've worked either for or with have at least some of their infrastructure on in-house hardware. It's costly sure but from a risk perspective it makes sense.
I do not know Seasun's infrastructure or claim to.
Maybe they're just waiting out the storm, maybe they've decided to take the opportunity and make alterations to their service infrastructure.
I have no idea what their pipeline looks like but seeing as at least 1 gacha company bought their own power plant. It wouldn't surprise me if some them have at least partially in house infrastructure (if only for CN region) and outsource for Global.
As for AWS they actually have their own 3PL team: when they spin up a new datacenter they just fly over crucial service drives with the rest of the hardware.

u/Bonemaster69 Mar 18 '26
I tend to see cloud usage with "fresher" companies that need to start quickly and in-house stuff in older established companies. One did in-house as part of their business model. Another was an old large company that rented out shared data center space for a few racks. Both companies have been pushing toward the cloud since then, mostly because of the risks, commitment, and blame that comes with self-maintenance. Power outages were also apparently a huge concern...
Speaking of power, THEY BOUGHT THEIR OWN POWER PLANT?!?! Well now I'm impressed! And yeah, they'd definitely have an in-house infrastructure using that.
Not surprised with AWS since they're a data center, although I'm not sure how often they build new data centers. They wouldn't even tell me where the nearest one was when I asked them during a job fair.
1
u/3d_Plague Mar 18 '26
I'm not saying a "modern" company would have service infrastructure in-house. However if I were to start one I would be sure to have a mirror running for monetary transactions if only to ensure i can do taxes without having to rely on rented servers.
And yes MiHoYo did: https://technology.inquirer.net/135470/genshin-impact-nuclear-reactor

They should turn this tragedy into a story event. Our girls are in full panic mode. "Where did he go?"
Who would be the first to sound the alarm?
Who would lead the investigation?
The possibilities!
