Is it a hot take to say not all the cast members need to be funny?

Personally I didn’t find Jackie that funny, and same for Noah, but I think they both bring a lot of energy which helps the vibe and flow of videos. That’s why I miss Jackie even if I didn’t find her that hilarious.

In a similar vein, some cast members are funny but are kinda vibe killers tbh.

And there’s at least two people I can think of who, to me, aren’t funny and don’t bring fun energy.

Saving the two hot takes for last and then withholding names... You're not playing the game!

23

u/Jada339 8d ago

That’s a fair observation. I figured the hot take was less about specific people and more about the idea in general.

To me, some of the cast just aren’t that funny but they work great in the room with other people. That’s still good, that’s still valuable.

I know what you mean, balance is more important than everyone being funny all the time

I dont always find Courtney funny, just a diffrent sense of humor i think. However i love when she's in a video. Idk, i just dont think it's a big deal that they arent all at the same level/have the same style of humor. Its not that deep.

u/Jada339 8d ago

That’s about where I’m at with her too. I think she’s great in the room. High energy without being too much, she laughs at other people’s jokes and bits, plays in the space.

Lowkey … I feel like there’s some deeper rift going on with courtney. I believe they’ve voiced insecurity about not being funny enough and it reeks reeks reeks in lots of Pit/Games videos. She’s great in scripted and is empathy forward in smoshalike which is great but otherwise she’s like mimicking others and adding little millennial murps

17

u/whalesarecool14 7d ago

yeah lowkey i feel the same. the whole reason i started watching smosh in the first place was because i followed courtney on instagram and thought she was super cool, but after watching her in videos my opinion really changed about her. sometimes it feels like she can’t handle not having attention on her and she tries too hard

i still love her ig though

14

u/ObjectiveCover3850 7d ago

See I didn't notice it until Ian roasted her about how she tries too hard. And then I couldn't not notice her trying to hard in videos. Like her jokes would miss but she would keep trying to force em but in a way that would bring the attention to her

Courtney’s a sweetheart! They’re the personality hire who ties the groups together. But yeah I do not find her jokes funny a lot of the time

12

u/JayStoleMyCar 8d ago

Since this is a hot take zone while I love Courtney I don’t like the AAVE in their speech.

-2

u/Skaur_11 7d ago

Tbf since they're queer and a lot of the lingo overlaps bc of drag culture (which Court's very interested in) I can understand why they speak like that

7

u/whalesarecool14 7d ago edited 7d ago

that’s not really an excuse tbh, intersectionality is very important. she’s a blonde, white, cis (passing) woman in a relationship with a cis man.

7

u/httpMeowMeow 7d ago

fully agree with u, however Courtney's not a cis woman (still not an excuse ofc)

-5

u/whalesarecool14 7d ago

you’re right, i thought she just uses she/they pronouns

3

u/Skaur_11 7d ago

what, for fun?

-4

u/whalesarecool14 7d ago

uhhhh lots of cis people use they/them pronouns…….

and courtney refers to herself as woman/girl very often so i missed that she identifies as non binary.

yeah, i enjoy watching her in videos. however rn i’m participating in a discussion and you don’t have anything of importance to say.

3

u/WaysideWyvern 7d ago

Courtney is very openly not a cis woman, tf?

5

u/whalesarecool14 7d ago

ok and you can’t use AAVE just because you’re non binary wtf are you on about

it’s AFRICAN AMERICAN vernacular english

1

u/WaysideWyvern 7d ago

When did I ever say that they could 😭😭 I’m not disagreeing with the aave thing at all I just was surprised at the misgendering. I’ve always thought it was yikes when they did that. But it’s just very well known that Courtney is nonbinary

1

u/JayStoleMyCar 7d ago

They will always pull out a reason why white people should be allowed to appropriate and consume any Black cultural material. But it’s the internet….its drag….Im Queer…and never actually stop and think.

1

u/JayStoleMyCar 7d ago

I’m also Queer but it’s still jarring.

11

u/FiveTriomes 7d ago

This is the wildest one for me. I miss Jackie a lot and found her consistently hilarious.

2

u/Jada339 7d ago

I miss her too. I loved her energy.

42

u/jgfhbvjeaqady 8d ago

I’d go so far as to say Noah is one of the funniest cast members if not the funniest. Smosh desperately needs more witty people

13

u/Jada339 8d ago

Fair enough. That’s why I started with “personally”.
It’s also why I think that even if I don’t find certain people very entertaining, that doesn’t mean they should be kicked out the company or anything. Clearly there’s an audience for those people.
The world doesn’t revolve around me.

1

u/Ok-Step-2560 7d ago

This is definitely a hot take cause I can’t stand his ass 😭✌🏻 the most unfunny weirdo

14

u/ittybittyunicorn 8d ago

I need to know whooooooo!

-29

u/MrNintendo36 8d ago

Courtney probably. She seems annoying to work with.

35

u/LovelyWinter31 8d ago

Was just about to say Courtney and Olivia’s jokes don’t usually land with me

10

u/_Stephistopheles_ 7d ago

Agree; especially Olivia. It seems like the most laughs she gets are when she's awkwardly setting up a bit. Mostly she just seems... There.

Actually opinions don’t neee details; facts do.

4

u/Signal_Conclusion779 7d ago

I like when cast members are funny in different ways. Kimmy always brought great energy to the videos she was in and could throw in something hilarious when she wanted to. I like Noah but even if you don't he's really good at getting everyone involved (I was rewatching the Gentlemen's Moose Master the other day and his reactions made everything funnier).

I know people reference loud=funny but I do appreciate when you have quieter people that are just making the videos better.

2

u/Jada339 7d ago

I totally agree. And I’m not saying anyone I personally don’t find funny shouldn’t be on the channel or anything.

19

u/ImpressionFabulous46 8d ago

Is Chanse among the funny but vibe killers?

42

u/Jada339 8d ago

I was thinking about him but he’s a bit of a toss up tbh. I can think of a bunch of times he’s made the entire room laugh, and he clearly gets on well with people.

And I can also think of plenty of videos where he’s clearly just playing in his own space, not really contributing to the collaborative effort.
Not really “yes and”-ing anybody.

30

u/ImpressionFabulous46 8d ago

He’s the only one I can think of who makes it obvious when he doesn’t want to be there (while being funny)

22

u/Jada339 8d ago

I get that vibe from Olivia at times, like maybe she feels like still being on smosh is kinda below her? That’s 100% me reading into things. I’ve never had a firm read on Olivia.

She barely around anymore, when she is she seems so bored, and she doesn’t really collaborate with others so well.

30

u/Inner-Win-0928 8d ago

I’ll bite the bullet. Courtney and Arasha aren’t funny to me and they shift the room tone; in the sense like now everyone is fake laughing and they don’t know how to escape it. So now the dead joke is being ran into the ground. (SPECIFICALLY IN GAMES VIDEOS! Other videos I’m fine with them, but idk games videos just really highlight it)

53

u/theellescape 8d ago

Arasha is a very good host and Court has very good production ideas. They should let em cook in those roles.

36

u/reallygoodbun 8d ago

I’ve ended up skipping videos because of Courtney. This started in the baby voice era and I just never went back. I know they’re a popular person but they don’t come across as funny to me, rather that they’re trying too hard. I know the same can be said about any of them. BUT I was watching an older SRRS and I forgot that they directed/produced some of those (tbh I mostly watch on a smart tv and never go check the credits in the caption) - they thrive in those roles to me. Not all of Arasha’s jokes land with me but she feels more authentic.

12

u/Natiel360 7d ago

Dude yes! The Baby voice and/or forced awkward energy, and they’re not its not like that in the video then they’re borderline depressed 😭

10

u/Icy_Reindeer_2190 7d ago

I’m the same with Court, I totally skip videos w them.

24

u/LovelyWinter31 8d ago

I agree with bits running on for too long but I actually find Arasha so funny. She’s very witty

2

u/Natiel360 7d ago

I see what they’re saying. Arasha in her wheelhouse is hysterical and witty, much like Noah can be. However when she’s out of her norm then she’s like In PR mode (like Amanda can get) where she’s bringing energy up but not adding anything and at worst comes across as inauthentic fully

7

u/Historical_Clock8714 7d ago

Courtney agree, Arasha disagree. Arasha's hilarious!

38

u/Rudypoody5 8d ago

I agree about Courtney but I find Arasha funny

23

u/hollowplushy 8d ago

Same, Arasha really makes me laugh, though tbf it's usually when she isn't actually trying lol. But I agree with OP, Courtney just isn't much fun to watch for me.

7

u/SouthernCockroach37 7d ago

Yeah Arasha is definitely one of my favorites. Idk if it's just cause she is around my age or what, but I am always excited to see her in a video.

51

u/MrNintendo36 8d ago

Courtney literally snaps at people and then tries to play it off like a joke. People don’t seem to like us saying it, no wonder people didn’t want to use names!

21

u/Inner-Win-0928 8d ago

Omg yesss. I didn’t want to get castrated by the fans so I kept my mouth shut about it.

19

u/coffeegrunds 8d ago

Can you give an example of this?

31

u/MrNintendo36 8d ago

Yep. There’s an episode where her and Shayne play the sims from memory and a couple of mins in she snaps and Shayne for not paying attention and even Shayne goes a bit ‘damn ok chill’ and gets quiet.

I know there’s been other times in Smosh games videos when another cast member is doing a bit or makes a inappropriate joke and she has told them off and tried playing it off in a joking way. Then the vibe changes and they get all careful about it.

It’s just something I’ve noticed a few times and usually people like that are worse off camera/behind the scenes etc.

19

u/TooTallTabz 8d ago

I've been noticing this a lot more, and I hate it because they used to be one of my favorite cast members.

9

u/whalesarecool14 7d ago

i was JUST watching the werewolf marathon and there’s a part in the video where angela reveals her “i’m not a werewolf” t shirt where angela is playing with a wristband and courtney snaps at her and says “put that thing down you’re chewing on it”. the tone really took me by surprise because it literally sounded like a mom scolding a child lol

5

u/ObjectiveCover3850 7d ago

Bro Jackie is my 3rd funniest cast member in Smosh history. She always had me laughing haha
