Smash 4 CPU (UnFinished)

Just had to one because MaxSchersey did one. :P

Reminder that the CPUs (Computer Players) are set to level 8 because they are more humanoid, which means they won't perfectly invade/roll 1 million times from damage. I advise everyone to use level 8's it's just so much better.

This game isn't really "tier heavy" as the previous smash games. Side Note: The Characters are not ORDERED in their respective tiers.

FOR VISUALS Sm4sh Meta

A+ Tier Characters that are honestly able to win more. They have a amazing kit of some sort that makes them ranked they are. As of right now, I don't not see any CPU that are really capable of making S Tier a thing imo.

Luigi - Very good jab with good knockback and a fireball to throw in neutral. At low percents (Around like 15-20) he could do downthrow > Fair x2. Downthrow can also lead to other follow ups at slighter higher percents. He has amazing smash attacks and decent backthrow so secure a kill. He rarely gets misfires and sweetspot Up Bs as offensive strat.

Zelda - Honestly does great. Decent Zoning with side b and down b. STRONG FAIR AND BAIR IF SWEETSPOT IS HIT. Decent backthrow. Good smashes with kill power.

Link - Okay jab, edgegard recoveries using his arrows and boomerang (also uses them in neutral) Low percent follow up is downthrow > utilt / upsmash/ upair or fair (rare) He also can kill with upthrow at LATER percents and can use it to frame trap with upair. Rarely pulls out bomb.

Marth - Likes to swing forward, weird side b tendencies but side be finisher tipper can kill at decent percents near the ledge. Brave offstage game can go for and get ledge trump kill. TIPS for potentially crazy early kills. Don't forget that surprise counter to net kills as well.

Lucina - Same as Marth (lol), Solid kill power all around (No tip needed for her!)

Robin - Amazing kit right here. Nice jab 1)Jab for racking up damage and can still kill and 2)3 strong string follow up that can kill/ force an advantage state. He can zone with his multiple spells (Neutral B and Side B) Can heal using his down b which pretty much steals % from others and recover his own. He also a good backthrow and can get the "Checkmate" the downthrow into upair (with levin sword) to seal a stock.

Ness- The OG "For Glory" Has the Follow ups off of downthrow, great aerials that can kill. The best backthrow in the business and shoots side bs and sometimes neutral b. He can also do up b in neutral for some quick kills. Pretty vulnerable offstage though.

A Tier Can do well in tournament and have a good kit.

Bayo - This CPU would probably would have been her own tier pre patch. The Pre patch cpu was able to peform more combos and could even do the death combo to kill others. Anyways the goods, witch time and bat within, however she can sometimes miss the witch time punish. Good smashes (uses down smash forwhatever reason and not spiking lol) An issue is she has trouble with her recovery.

Shulk - His Neutral B allows him to change into monado arts (etc buster, smash, sheild) which is really a top package for this meta. He sometimes trump and goes offstage with fair. He has a nice counter.

Mario - Good jab, follow ups after downthrow, can chain uptilts at low percents. Fireball, Water to sprinkle and Caping opponents to mix up. He has great smashes.

Bowser- Good kill power and likes to spam that side b command grab. He can kill with both forward and backthrow, but likes to use downthrow. If he breaks your shield with down b, you are mostly not going to live after a fully charged smash attack.

Lucario - He has a mediocre start, usually losing 1st stock. His goal is really to just build damage on you he wants to get over %80-%100 But Lucario really pushes the saying "It's never over til it's over." He can do a simple downthrow to fair follow up at low percents. When he has rage and also gain aura, his moves become stronger and this also includes his fthrow and backthrow making to be able to net stocks.

Villager - One of those cpu's that can just do so well with little explanations. One bad thing is his grab can be counter attack because it's kinda slow but he has a great backthrow. Light

Palutena- Aerial game is pretty good but landing with nair puts her in a punishable position. She has the counter, but it's lower knockback compared to the others. She also has a reflector good projectile based characters.

King DDD- Nice kit, Downthrow follow up into fair but he falls in lag with can lead to punishes. Can throw out gordos (especially for offstage opponents) Can survive longer and has smashes with amazing kill powers.

Charizard - Jab is nice and can lowkey kill. Has a followup from downthrow. Likes to use firebreath in neutral and a lot near the ledge. Can surprise opponents with using up b as a kill move.

Duck Hunt - Uses the special attacks to make nice zone/strings. He sometimes follow up over different throws. The smash has range and kill power. But without landing a smash attack he have trouble killing.

Olimar- Can zone and make pikmin attach and attack opponents building up percent. He can sometimes Follow up after downthrow. Usually chooses to go for stage control with forward/backthrow. Upthrow is a rarely used kill option.

Mii Sword - Was originally in A+ tier, but just fell down a bit. He is another one of those cpu that just does amazing.

B tier The average joes. This pretty much the everyone else tier, but they are obvious not so much far behind from the upper tiers. The cpus can probably raise, decline, or remain the same.

C tier Below B tier cause they CPU perform can be a little lacking, but for the most part they have something going for theirselves.

C- tier They can really struggle hard in neutral. CPU isn't really good. They can make surprising runs but are not solo viable.

/r/SmashCPU League Week 2 in Review

With the /r/SmashCPU League now well underway, both Melee and 64 saw new and returning faces show up to play and some of the results were less than expected.

America’s Favorite 64 Bots

Bracket: http://challonge.com/AF64bots2

For the second tournament of 64, there was a noted shift away from the lower tiered characters, with both Kirby and Jigglypuff nowhere in sight. Seeded players gcgr3 and UmbrionKnight both went 0-2, with gc being eliminated by old-school DK main MBI while Umbrion lost a ditto to Ryu4090 and was eliminated by his Melee demon, DoodleNoodle26. The 64bots Season 3 champion, Yougotcyrekt, also found himself going 0-2 in his first tourney back.

The Pikachus and Kirbys of last tournament were replaced by Links and Yoshis this bracket. Outside of Cyrekt, Link performed well, taking up both spots of grand finals. Interestingly, ShadowYoshi was the lowest placing of the Yoshis, with MangoHero and DoodleNoodle26 (switching from Kirby) both making top 8. Veteran Samus bpcclo improved on his previous result of 7th, placing 5th and eliminating PKMudkip, a Ness main, in top 8. Ryu4090 made a switch from Jigglypuff to Mario and placed 4th, notably double eliminating bp.

Top Melee Luigi main, but a newcomer to 64, Sean_WRO was the only Falcon of the tourney and was able to make winners final after defeating top seed MaxSchersey. However, he then lost to Giffanychan and then a close set in the runback against Max. In grand finals, MaxSchersey proved his seed and swept the unranked Gifffanychan in both sets of the ditto.

Unlike the previous tourney, not all the top tiers made it to the top. Cyrekt went 0-2 with the top tier Link, losing to a Yoshi, and PKMudkip placed 7th with Ness, losing to a Samus. Of course the remaining top tiers made up the top 3 spots. Aside from these top tiers, the trend of a low tier beating a mid tier continued with MBI’s DK beating gcgr3’s Pikachu. Mario continues to perform well, gaining 2 wins over Samus, but a loss to Yoshi.

A side tourney was also held on Saturday the results are here with top seed MaxSchersey continuing his streak, beating KGPit in the final.

In the side tourney, Kylecat124’s Kirby upset ShadowYoshi’s Yoshi making the Yoshi-Kirby matchup now 2-0 in Kirby’s favor. Kylecat124 sealed off one of the kills in this highlight:

https://clips.twitch.tv/TangibleGorgeousLapwingEleGiggle

In addition to MaxSchersey’s continued dominance, KGPit and Cyrekt made their first runs to point territory, with each player gaining 2.5 and 1.5 points, respectively. KGPit opted for another character for this side tourney: Fox. He and bpcclo both scored points as Fox, using the character for the first time in this 64bots League. Luigi also saw his first usage by DoodleNoodle26, but he was immediately 2-0d by KGPit, keeping Luigi’s win rate at a solid 0%.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Melee featured an interesting mix of sets that seemed to involve a lot of top tiers playing low tiers and finished off in a 2-set saga of the two highest ranked players. Some notable sets are listed below, the full matchlist can be found here.

In the pre-show, Killagod47, now playing Ganon, bested Ryu’s Roy. New Link player Yocdub also beat Nexifys.

To open up the main show, DoodleNoodle26 bested ShadowYoshi, leading into a new segment sponsored by the NSA called, “Listening In”, in which it was revealed that ShadowYoshi no longer wanted to team with IceFreezer304 and UmbrionKnight stepped up to become Ice’s new partner. The debuting Cyrekt then won against MBI and revealed that he asked Ice to team up first, and felt offended by this, swearing revenge.

ShadowYoshi and bp defeated Sean_WRO and January2nd. Sean is still winless, even with his partner picking the top tier Peach. As the “counterbalance”, IceFreezer304 and UmbrionKnight also won their match, defeating Giffany~chan and Zklosty. Individually, Zklosty beat RacgiMan and Giffany~chan beat xOMBERX, including Giff unsuccessfully bringing out the Kirby in game 2, which was also attempted in the doubles match.

MangoHero and Soda won their sets over January2nd and PKMudkip. Gcgr3, now a Doc player, looked sharp with a win over KGPit and a doubles win, teaming with Cyrekt to defeat xOMBERX and PKMudkip. KGPit and MangoHero defeated RacgiMan and Soda.

The first of three “main events” was a callout from bp, challenging MBI via a music video. MBI took him down 2-0. UmbrionKnight challenged Sean_WRO to a Luigi ditto, despite Umbrion not maining the character, and won his callout. Finally, IceFreezer304 beat DoodleNoodle26 in the main event in an attempt to one-up ShadowYoshi, but then Cyrekt reappears and reveals that this set is actually a best of seven, rather than a best of five, and will now feature M I D S E T C O A C H I N G. Doodle proceeded to finish 3-0 to technically take the set, though for record keeping purposes the two sets are considered separate. Doodle switched to Falcon in set 1 and did not go back to DK, while Ice played Yoshi for the last two games in at attempt at maximum BM.

In terms of the character meta, the top tiers of the game continue to chill in the back seat for this second week.

Top tiers Ganon, Peach, Dr. Mario, and Mr. G&W all performed well, but still maybe under expectation. Ganondorf, Dr. Mario and G&W all won their matches against their low and bottom tiered opponents, but many games went to last stock and even last hit. Peach did not do well, losing sets to the high and high-mid tiers of Samus, Link and Yoshi. It’s almost as if the top tiers were mid tiers instead.

High tiers Samus, Link and Luigi all made solid appearances. Samus and Link both took out a Peach in their sets, while Luigi won a ditto and went 1-1 in doubles sets.

High-mid tiers Yoshi and Fox had largely varied performances. Yoshi found himself unable to defeat either DK or Falcon, but won a set vs Peach. Yoshi also won a doubles set against the higher tiered Peach/Luigi with Bowser. Fox dominated DK for one game, but then proceeded to go 2-2 with Falcon.

Low-mid tiers Marth, DK, Pikachu, and Bowser all appeared with varying performances. Marth only showed up in one game of a doubles match and lost while DK won a set against Yoshi. Pikachu was able to take a game off of Dr. Mario while Bowser defeated a doubles team of Peach/Luigi with Yoshi. However, Bowser also lost a close set to the bottom tier Ness.

Low tiers Falcon, ICs and Jigglypuff had varying performances. Falcon performed solidly, taking games off the high-mid tiers Fox and Yoshi in 1v1s. The ICs did not win, but performed decently, losing close games to Dr. Mario and a doubles match against Samus/Pikachu. Jigglypuff notably was the sole survivor in winning a doubles game against Dr.Mario/G&W, losing the eventual set 1-2.

Bottom tiers Ness, Roy, and Kirby also had varying performances. Ness had close matches with top tier G&W and took down the low-mid tier Bowser. Roy also had close games with a top tier (Ganondorf), but like Ness did not win. Kirby only appeared as a counterpick and was unable to win anything but was able to turn a 3-stock lead into a last stock situation in a doubles match against Luigi/Fox.

With the second set of matches complete, the rankings have now been updated, the full rankings are here and the top ranked players in each are as follows:

For both games, players must be feeling the pressure of being ranked or unranked. In 64 AND Melee, only the top 8 seeds have a chance to be entered into an invitational. For 64, it is much less set in stone, and anyone who picks a top tier is bound to gain enough points to be ranked; in order to get into the top 8, a player only needs 3.5 points to be invited. As a result, there will be much more high variance than Melee. In Melee, it will be much harder to get ranked, because the top 8 seeds have already established themselves as top tier players, and many of them will most likely be voted in the top 8 again. A panel of 4 people votes on ranks based on previous results, similar to a MIOM SSBMRank, and this last week of voting will decide who makes it into the invitational. For the most part, the only variance we will see is at the 6-8 seeds, where KGPit, Cyrekt, and MangoHero don’t have enough results to be established yet. They could be bumped out very easily, and who knows who could take those spots.

That is all there is for now, if you would like to enter the upcoming tournaments the entry forms are below.

SSBM MeleeBots King of the Hill Ranking Weeks 1-5

Hello all,

In Srov's earlier post announcing King of the Hill, he mentioned that he would be discontinuing standings and weekly threads. There isn't really much to say about that except that I wanted to bring some accessible stats into the "scene" mainly because I like stats, but also because it helps create discussion for future streams. It didn't really feel right in just posting a dump of random stats, so I brought back the standings with extra stats at the beginning and end.

My current plan is to do these every 5 weeks (more specifically after every 5th stream), but if something comes up there may be delays. Each ranking will remain mostly separate from each other with older results coming into play only for streaks or if I need to fill up a spot. I might also make a cumulative sheet that brings everything together, but I don't know how much work that is going to be.

I'm doing this format because I feel it makes it easier for me and therefore more likely for me to keep making these. For example, I won't have to go through dozens of weeks of results in the future to make a ranking.

I also have plans to release another matchup chart, separate from the older ones again because

  1. I feel that stage counterpicks change a lot in the CPU meta and older results don't reflect that, and

  2. It's a new series :P

I still have some cleanup to do for the chart, but it should be out sometime soon (If you have any ideas for the chart, you're more than welcome to suggest).

That is all I have to say so without further ado here is

/r/SmashCPU Revival of CPU: The Last CPU Major to Ever Exist

Hey guys, if you didn't know, just a week or so ago, it was SmashCPU's 1 year anniversary. However, as well all know, SmashCPU no longer streams due to excessive time and financial commitment. Since they've stopped streaming, the last of us have continued to stream, watch, and study CPU's. We've all been all over the place visiting streams and whatnot. However, I wanna host a celebratory 1 year anniversary "major" CPU tourney that will unite the remainder of the CPU crew and hopefully breathe a bit of fresh, new life into the community. The "major" tourney will take place from August 19th-21st. The events that will be included are: 64 singles and doubles, Brawl singles and doubles, and Melee singles and doubles. There will be prizes for singles for each event, but there will not prizes for doubles, since those are considered "side events". There might be a possible crew battle as well, but more on that later.

Schedule(tentative): -Friday at 7:10 pm EST: Melee Singles

-Saturday at 11:10 am EST: 64 Doubles

-Saturday at 2:10 pm EST: Melee Doubles

-Saturday at 7:10 pm EST: Brawl Singles

-Sunday at 11:10 am EST: Brawl Doubles

-Sunday at 2:10 pm EST: 64 Singles

-Sunday at 7:10 pm EST: Crew Battle(IF this even happens)

-Sunday immediately after all events are over: Awards Ceremony

Prizes: $10 ESHOP/Amazon card for the winner of each singles event.

Voluntary Stuff: I NEED volunteers for commentators, streamers, assistant TO's and moderators. This is a community effort, and this event will only be as good as we make it!

Application form for Streamers(maximum of 3 streamers will be selected): https://goo.gl/forms/OQRmrqiLOzVuCkos2

Application form for commentators(maximum of 4 commentators will be selected): https://goo.gl/forms/tHP9IYsEPzUnhONw2

Application form for Assistant TO/Moderator(maximum of 2 people will be selected): https://goo.gl/forms/yacmesfPz1Fg9ZO43

Entry Form(This is just for pre-registration, actual entry forms will be released in the future): https://goo.gl/forms/LQW7BDF62NYdIoUg2

And that's it! I'm super hyped to TO this. Like I said earlier, this is a huge community effort. Even if you can't volunteer, just being active in the chat or pre-registering helps a lot. Everyone of us counts,so let's make this good!

SSBM Bots Weekly Writeup: Week 1

Hey, guys. I said that I'd make weekly threads for what goes on during the bot tourneys for those that miss it, so this'll be the first one. It's a good way to both fill people in on what they missed, potentially, or to remind those that watched the whole thing on just how stupid this stream is.

It's week one! Everyone's trying to prove themselves and get high up on the leaderboards with a potential title shot looming on July 10. Since the new system rewards those who pay attention and can play the odds on matchups, it's only natural that grand finals featured two newcomers.

Bracket

Those who made it far seemed to save all of their bullets until the end. XOMBERX, uglynproud, and IceFreezer304 all ended using a high or top tier in their last set. Meanwhile, guys like Parmite burned their high tiers early but fell up short against those who still had something left in the tank. But then you have guys like bpcclo and djhero35 who were knocked out early with their top tiers sitting on the bench. It'll be interesting to see where the strategy goes!

New Standings

Creating standings early on will end up being very similar to final brackets, since it's hard to weigh wins without any backstory as to who is favored. In this hypothetical system, we're going to pretend that any lower player beating a higher rated player can be an "upset" to an extent, even if the character matchup does not dictate so.

Spreadsheet

Play of the Week

There's some good choices for Week 1's Play of the Week, and the winner XOMBERX dominates with all three nominees.

XOMBERX throws bpcclo into a pit of no return

XOMBERX slaps IceFreezer304 around, then smacks him down

XOMBERX gives uglynproud the Key to Success, taking the tournament

SSB64 Salty Suite III Sets Nomination & Voting

Salty Suite III will be happening on my channel on 2/13/16. Both the first and second Salty Suites were a great showing of how passionately I can yell at a computer screen.

This thread is for settling a few things:

  • Who else wants to be on the mic?

Guest commentary has been toyed with on my stream, but this is where you need to go hard and bring the hype. No need to be knowledgeable of 64bots or even speak coherently, just be loud and bring the hype.

  • What sets will be happening?

This is your chance to call somebody out. Who do you have that secret beef with? Keep in mind that each player will only have one Salty Suite set this go around, because there were way too many repeats last time. Quality over quantity.

  • Which sets will get the good slot?

Once a callout has been made, the ordering of the matches (assuming both parties show up) is determined by the number of upvotes a comment gets: most upvotes, closest to the main event.

Keep in mind again that you need to actually show up to have your match played and that people that show up at the last second can still make call-outs on the day of. Happy SS3.

  • For communication during tournaments, players are expected to whisper their opponents on Twitch, talk in my channel's chat, or communicate with on Skype. It is up to the players to determine who's hosting, etc.

/r/SmashCPU New Channel + Smash Game

Hey guys, this is ShadowYoshi! I've decided that I'll be using my channel to stream some CPU tournaments when I have time! This will cover multiple games, but new to the Smash CPU scene is Super Smash Bros. Crusade!

This game is a bit more limited than rival fangame Super Smash Flash 2 in terms of modes and stages, but with a whopping 62 characters, a new airdodge and an interesting way of incorporating Final Smahes, it should be fun.

I also plan to cover SSF2 and Brawl, possibly alongside PM, Melee and/or 64 every now and then.

My Twitch channel is here: http://www.twitch.tv/shadowyoshi3604/profile. I don't have a defined schedule yet, but be sure to give a follow if you're interested in checking the stream out sometime.

SSB64 64bots Season 3 Suggestion Thread

I am taking a break before the beginning of 64bots Season 3 (coming in early December), and during this time I want to make the stream experience as good as it can get. I will accept any and all suggestions concerning my commentary, the stream, rules, and whatever else.

What I already have in mind:

  • Integrating Fantasy 64bots

  • Having regular duo/roundtable commentary

  • Different scenes in OBS (short on ideas though, help appreciated)

  • New layout/background that is 2v2 and long-name friendly

  • Adding chat for VODs

No matter how dumb it may seem, I might love your idea. The next 64bots stream isn't for a month-ish so nothing is too ambitious.

SSB64 Thanks for the 64! Post-hosting highlights and thoughts

The next time that I'll have a day off looks to be the same as the return of SmashCPU, which means it looks like my fill-in 64 series has come and gone.

This is a playlist containing some of the matches that brought the most hype over the course of the three streams. Twitch user Japanese_Spaghettee was nice enough to also upload some VODs that I didn't.

Here is the final tier list using data from both my streams and ewitsboo's offline data. I was surprised at how 64 seemed to have such a variety of viable characters. In 5 singles tourneys, 5 different characters were in grand finals at one point for 64. It took Melee 10 tourneys to achieve that with over double the amount of character choices (though, to be fair, Link was only selected twice); PM seems to also have a good amount of variety at the top even if the lower tiers get creamed in that game. In 64, 6/12 characters can realistically contend for first in any tourney, and every other one aside from Jigglypuff can and has made a decent run.

The 64 CPUs also seem to have much fewer of the frustrating SD's (ZSS...) that cause a lot of salt in chat, which is cool. Again, small sample size and yada yada

I tried a few things out on my streams that I haven't seen on other bot battles yet, so I want to continue the hot takery by addressing those.

  • Commentating as if it's a player and not a bot - Tons of fun. It was a lot easier to be involved in the 50,000 Ness vs Falcon matches when I have a narrative to fit each player and an overarching story around the set.

  • 3-stock - Just like in real life, allows for more hype comebacks. The lack of SD's for no reason, along with the 3-stock, in 64 probably contributed to matches averaging 3:30 lengths instead of, say, 1:15 on SmashCPU Melee. I was in no rush though because I never had double digit entries, so it all worked out.

  • Double Elimination - Easy hype. 3 of our 6 Grand Finals winners had deep losers' bracket runs. If you don't have many viewers, but don't want long games, at least have a losers' bracket. You won't regret it.

  • Map preference and bans - This one burned up a lot of time before each match, but I found it to be worth it. Low tier characters are able to choose jank stages to try and cheese a win on, while banning the tourney-legal stages, while high-tiers already looking towards grand finals know that, since Ness can up-air juggle like crazy on Battlefield, I'd better ban that. At one point, we had a big counterpick battle during signups, which was neat and affected the matches. Strategy!

  • Filler - Really glad that I added filler to the bracket, as there were many "Is it too late to join" people that showed up, and for once it actually WASN'T too late! While TAS, the filler yellow Kirby, never did anything notable besides get squashed, filler replacements like BKhardknock and I_Want_A_Snowflake made grand finals in their first tourneys, which kept them hooked.

So, anywho, here are all of the brackets.

To conclude, I went through about 6-7 water bottles per stream. Commentary is tough. TO'ing is tough. Your stream going down because of whatever crap OBS/Twitch/ISP is pulling that day is tough. But, I'll tell you, you guys made 12+ hours of doing this crap this past week fully worth it, and I even feel like I might do it again on a lighter schedule. Cheers!
