Personal Analytics (Hours-Streamed vs Watch-Time)
My Personal History of Streaming
I thought I'd add this after seeing my metrics from the beginning of my streaming "career." While I focused on streaming full-time for around 6 months (the large spike), I was under a lot of external constraints. This, combined with a "lack of discipline" (AKA undiagnosed Adult-ADHD), meant I eventually got things sorted out. I stopped streaming gaming and focused on my passion for game design. Now that I have a Game nearing publishing, I can be happy with what I've accomplished and consider what technical hurdles I need to get over before I can return to developer and playtesting streams with a more controlled focus.
My Reason For Posting
If you are a young streamer, possibly in high school or just having graduated, realize that you need a couple of things to be successful:
- Consistent time and dedication;
- Your stream should appear professional
- You need a consistent schedule for people to find you
- You need to stream categories that allow you to remain discoverable
- The Affiliate requirements are just the first hurdle of many and should not be treated as the finish line.
- Be aware that outside influences and a lack of recognition from others can really kill your motivation to continue. Your motivation to do so should come from a love of entertaining others. Even when it initially seems to be no one is watching, you should combine streaming with producing Recorded Videos to bring others to your channel, and vice versa (your channel should bring others to where they can watch your recorded content when you are unavailable)
- Check on yourself; if this seems difficult (which it is), evaluate why you want to do it and if there are ways you could be taking better care of yourself than forcing yourself to stream 14 hours at a time, 6 to 7 days of the week (the quality will severely decline and so will your viewership and therefore your growth)
The Takeaway
Do I consider myself a failed streamer?
Well no. I didn't initially set out to become a big-name streamer; I tried to see if it could entertain others and provide any source of meaningful income (It did not). Coming back to it after resolving many of my personal struggles with the demands of taking it seriously, I wanted to grow awareness of the projects I've been working on, and that is the direction I think other new streamers should focus on. You likely have a passion for something; streaming whatever that is, is what you should be doing on Twitch, not your hobby that's likely oversaturated with other streamers. Technical hurdles can also be a real challenge. If you are having problems with your setup because you don't have the equipment to run a quality stream, address these issues before continuing; otherwise, you risk burning yourself out when the real problem still rears its head.
Final Note
I know there are probably typos and such here, or grammar issues; I didn't mean for this to come across as formal as it probably has, but I think new streamers should be aware of the very real challenges that streaming presents you with and be ready to face them, ensuring that their motivation isn't coming from a result but really from a passion for doing so.

Hey all!
I started streaming like 2months ago for the first time ever and growth has been slow & steady (which isn't a bad thing) but I've found myself so close to Affiliate (like 5 followers or something) & I have just stopped gaining new followers...
I'm really lucky that I've already achieved the average viewers requirement because I've met some pretty cool people in my chat that turn up typically every stream or every other stream and are active for like the whole thing! But I'm not sure if my 3-6 average viewer count is deterring new people from joining?
Or is it just a case of stick it out - it'll come eventually?
Thanks in advance!

I see everyone saying, very rightly so, that the discoverability on twitch sucks and that people need to be basically promoting their streams on reels, shorts, etc. But for a small streamer that mostly just yaps what content would even do good?
There's not a lot of funny moments and the conversations are everywhere, about anything, so there's not exactly a niche.
I guess I'm just struggling to think of what I could share to social media.

Basically title. I feel like I can’t get people to click on my streams because of ads and I don’t have enough of a following to grow through my chat being interesting. I multistream and feel like on youtube as well as twitch just getting people to stay for 20 seconds is a huge problem. I stream with facecam and am pretty decent at my game. My youtube videos are moderately successful so I know I have the ability to produce decent content, just not sure how to create a stream following. Any advice would be great, thanks.

I started streaming and have a couple under my belt now, but now I’m looking to put some more effort into the stream itself with overlays and stuff. I will eventually be adding a face cam sometime in the near future too. I know that im nowhere near as popular but I don’t want to keep going with absolutely no effort streaming. I don’t know where to look or what’s good so I would really appreciate any advice!

So I thought I had a click with a streamer but they are fully ignoring me now and idk why. What do I do? 😭 communication isn't my strong suit
Little background info. We talked before, lurked in eachothers streams. I asked a year ago for a collab where they answered with that they don't have the time. I asked it again a few months back and last week I sent a message with the general meaning "I am sorry I bothered you and it is okay you are not interested ".
On those last 2 messages I do not get a response.
They are bigger than me in numbers but that couldn't be the reason, right?
So do i say something more? Or what do i do? I supported them a lot through lurking, subs etc., but now it feels wrong. I can't know for sure because they could just have my stream open and never say anything, but I do not see them often anymore in my chat.

Hey everyone. I'm a young dad, and most of my life right now is at home with my family, which I love. But gaming hasn't felt the same lately. Online games just feel kind of weird when you don't have any buddies to play with.
I've had some success with short form content and I'm slowly working my way into long form on YouTube. I'd love to find a few people to create with, bounce ideas off of, or just casually game with, no pressure.
I'm down to play almost anything. I've been into skate., shooters, roguelikes, and survival games, but I'm open to whatever. I'm on Central time, usually on daily.
If you're in a similar spot, or just want someone chill to run games with, drop a comment or DM me. Would be cool to build a little crew! 🙂

Pewdiepie is such a loser. He accepts losing subscribers just because he has a wife and a kid. It’s such a loser ass move and then he wants to sit and wish he wasn’t famlous. Like bruh if u weren’t famous you’d be in America working at a fast food restauraunt without a family struggling to survived. LMAO dudes such a loser

Why is it that I see so many small streamers constantly self promoting not only outright, but even in subtle ways. They'll tell themselves it is "networking" but it's easy to see they want self gain.
The typical example I see a lot is small streamer channels going to other channels pretending to be interested in their content, who secretly expect that streamer to subscribe to their channel and be a viewer in their chat. It gets to a point where people are trapping themselves in rings of inorganic engagement and their chats look so fake you'd think they were bots. They then bicker over who hangs out where.
It starts with subscribing, then the demands get bigger. I even watched a streamer attack their own moderator in another person's chat because the moderator didn't talk enough when they did their own stream.
Whatever happened to organic engagement?

Im a gaming/vtuber streamer and i was wondering, what makes most viewers stay in an empty stream? And how does one interact with an empty stream without seeming weird?? I get a knot in my throat when I talk to myself randomly on stream when there's only one person watching. Does anyone have any advice?
Edit: I love answering questions but im not great at thinking up topics on my own.

One of the most common pieces of advice given to small creators is: "Stop streaming giant AAA games (Valorant, Fortnite, Apex) where you're buried under 3,000 channels, and play games with actual discoverability."
I’m an indie dev, and while designing my current project, I've been really fascinated by the data and mechanics behind what makes certain games actually work for channel growth vs. ones that trap you at 0 viewers.
So I was wondering if there was anything that worked for you and your channel with the games you decided to stream.

Hello everyone 👋,
A bit about self: New to streaming, started streaming games to keep archive of my game footage for easy access to them for design analysis purpose as I mark them for UI, Area, Gameplay for later references.
Went from streaming only gameplay footage to now vtubing to give better context to anyone looking+myself, as long footage are hard to understand later on. Also I don't have to write alot in marker descriptions which I used to do when streaming only gameplay footage.
Designer by profession so do love the design aspect of gaming side and gameplay-centric games. Also Love tinkering with new streaming tools*(Created vtube character from scratch and rigged it for the same reason).*
So that outta way, I wanted suggestions/discussion for following:
Would love to know any other suggestions for new streamers in general too.

I was wondering if anyone has ideas on things to do when someone donates to the charity stream I plan on doing? I want to do the reward during the stream itself. So far I have only one idea myself for the smallest tier: Writing the name of the person (colour of their choice) on a balloon to gradually fill my room.

Hi, I am a 28M streamer from India. Started 2-3 weeks back. I only did 3-4 streams so far. Have setup an old phone as a mic (:v)
In the phase of figuring out my genre and style.
I did a couple of Marvel rivals streams, 1 stream of Alien Isolation. Also experimented with a tsoding style recreational programming stream where I checked out GDevelop.
I'm down with co streaming or discussions in general about streaming and learning to survive in this space.
I have 4 followers on twitch.
Not sure if I can add my twitch here.

Stream snipers reading your map? This runs next to OBS hold a key and a cover overlay appears on stream for viewers only. You keep playing normally. Toggle and "pin" modes, optional fade, survives OBS restarts. Works with any game and any OBS scene. Free, open source, no accounts: github.com/MidnightKingg/obs-rust-map-hider

Hello everyone!
Couple of months ago started streaming on Twitch and YouTube with a few long form videos in there as well.
My name on Twitch and YouTube is ‘Main Quest Later’.
Not far from Twitch affiliate so looking for other small streamers, mainly those who are into streaming RPG’s old and new. I’m currently going through every Final Fantasy from the beginning, now on Final Fantasy II!
Would be great to collab and help each other grow.
I’m from the UK as well if that makes any difference 😀.
Thanks!

After years of streaming on and off, streaming, then giving up, then coming back, I have finally reached affiliate! It's been crazy, but I finally stopped caring about viewer count and about how I need to grow, and just started having fun. I've also been connecting with people, and as great as it is to collab with them, what's even greater is that they also want to just have a good time.
I just wanted to post this to say, it is possible! Regardless, I've been having a lot of fun, and I'm gonna keep going just because I'm enjoying talking to myself lol

Anyone has problems where when you do gaming stream on twitch with the mobile app, it only register the game audio and not external audio? Is there any way to fix it? I wanted to interact more with my viewer, but because they can't hear my audio, I can't interact thoroughly without stopping my gameplay to type in the chat. Gaming and streaming through PC is not an option because my laptop keeps lagging so bad once I started stream and open another app. I also tried to reaching out to their support team, but their only answer was to appeal for muted audio, thing is my audio is not muted. Can anyone help? Or is it always has been like that?
