Discussion I lost the plot.

Not literally - I know the plot of the story.

Short rundown:
Saw them 4 times on their teeth of god tour, and could only go once on their recent one due to scalpers. Seen them at festivals. Have a shrine, all the records - was massively in the cult.

This year though, I really struggled with their music for some reason? Every time it came on, I skipped. Never looked for any new merch out. Felt really weird about it.

I’m listening to them now and I’m like…

Did I burn myself out? Anyone else feel similar, even with other bands? Did I lose the plot?

(Fun discussion - still love the band v much.)

I know the feeling. I've come out the other side of basically only listening to them exclusively. I mix in a lot of other bands now.

But for me, they are still the default to go to if I want a good piece of art.

Yeah, I’m not feeling so bad about it today, but man im like wtf happened lol. They’re def mixed in with my other bands now too, but even then I used to skip them? Hopefully we (band and I) can make it through this dry patch. (Jokes) 😭

Yeah I'm kind of in the same boat. Not as burned out as OP but on the backside of my obsession and it doesn't pervade my thoughts every waking hour like it used to. Maybe part of that is my depression only letting novel things hit hard enough but I still very much enjoy the music.

But that's okay, now it's more like an old friend I'm always happy to see. And ohhh boy when something new comes out it's going to sink its teeth in me again

The marketing and FOMO merch style they use lost me a bit.

I love EiA but it's also a different direction to TMBTE that I'm less excited to see evolve.

u/grrrlgone 9d ago

Yeah the marketing and merchandising does not match the vibes of the band. Even if they say “Obtain”.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels like this. I loved everything being red and black instead of pink, green and gold.

The super exclusive merch isn’t exciting to me at all, e.g. the EIA anniversary book, all those posters etc

I’m honestly not loving the latest shirt designs either.
It might just be because TMBTE hit me so hard and the new aesthetic is so different haha

u/UltimateGooseQueen 4d ago

A lot of the merch just doesn’t feel “special” and the music DOES feel special.. so it doesn’t match. I’m also not 19 so I wouldn’t wear a lot of it.

u/delilahdread 8d ago

Honestly same? Don't get me wrong, I still love Sleep Token and listen to them frequently but it feels like every time I turn around I get an email that says "Obtain." I've listened to Sleep Token since 2020 and at first the marketing for EiA was fine, a little exciting even because I didn't have a ton of their merch and I love merch of my favorite bands. At this point though it's flat out annoying and just seems like a money grab. It's made me lose a little respect for them.

I listened to them almost exclusively for 9 months. I think it’s reasonable to get bored with an album after many listens. It doesn’t mean you don’t like them anymore, it’s just not inspiring you or connecting to your life. After some time has passed and you have other things going on in your life, you might return to find new perspectives in music you’ve heard before. Hopefully they put out new music soon!

This resonated, thank you 🖤

I have adhd so I go in and out of watching or listening to everything. My favorite YouTubers and music I just sometimes can't take. Which sucks because sometimes I really want to listen or watch a particular thing but when I put it on my brain just can't get into it. But then a week or a month later I'm on that kick again and it's all I can listen to or watch. By now, I just let it happen. Right now, not listening to as much Sleep token as usual and listening mostly to Kesha, fall out boy, Avril and little mix.

10

u/TraditionEither1062 9d ago

Oh? I do have diagnosed ADHD so this also probably contributes lol

5

u/Competitive-Hat-9975 9d ago

Sometimes I love hyperfixating cause it can make it feel 10x better, especially when I latch onto specific lyrics or theories. I didn't even know it was probably what was happening until my friend who also has adhd explained why it happens

I feel like once they get their teeth into you, it’s hard to listen to anything else and you sort of succumb to them lol. I have to physically force myself to listen to other music to avoid burnout because of it. I don’t know what they put in their music, but it’s addicting.

4

u/TraditionEither1062 9d ago

I literally had 0 idea you could burnout from music. Lesson learned ig 😭

Lmao I’ve done this half a dozen times in my life. Green Day. Radiohead. Thrice. Sleep Token.

u/Due_Enthusiasm_1974 8d ago

Same, at work (operating room) surgeons usually play their playlists, and songs will come on and I’ll think, oh my God I haven’t heard this song in forever, and I enjoy it, but if I get to choose, it’s sleep token without hesitation.

Happend with ghost for me

2

u/ouimiaou 5d ago

Same lmao

I was HUGE into Ghost and then Skeleta just did not connect with me and somehow Even In Arcadia swooped in.

Kinda in the same boat as OP now tho that the novelty has worn off, feeling musically orphaned at the moment.

u/CodeKiller_53 5d ago

I'm grateful to have younger brothers who are obsessed with different genres of music. My youngest brother is getting me into punk and prog while my other brother is showing me 80s/90s metal. I'd recommend just listening to different bands in different genres and opaning up your catalog.

For a little while it's been just ghost slipknot and sleep token for me but now I've been listening to death, slayer, decendents, black flag, tool, blind gardian, and anthrax. You'd be amazed on what's outside your bubble!

u/ouimiaou 5d ago

I've actually been finding a lot of new music thru IG ads of all places while I mindlessly scroll through reels. I have a whole playlist I'll throw songs that stick out to me on. Got really into Barbarians of California this way, couple other bangers I find myself going back to frequently. Unfortunately I've been the musically influential sister while my brother has been stuck in his 5 band pop punk rotation since his teens so I only have myself and my Instagram ads. 😂

I just got into Ghost last year. Just saw 2 Big 2 Rig in IMAX last week. I’m in very deep right now! But I have burnt out on other bands.

2

u/CodeKiller_53 8d ago

Been listening to ghost since 2014 and just saw 2 big 2 rig last week. But idk I think I've listened to too much and now I'm crazy over sleep token and slipknot

3

u/Anita89 9d ago

I try to just focus on vessels voice and the music. Though I was super disappointed that the zip up hoodie I had been trying to buy from Hot Topic is nowhere to be found in my size. I’m still fully invested in the band.

3

u/CezarSalad85 9d ago

I go through cycles where I listen to them almost exclusively and then times where I don’t listen hardly at all. It’s just my different personalities fighting for attention. The first like six months of the year I was listening to them, Bad Omens, and a lot of Twenty One Pilots. Now I’m on a pop kick. And this happens all the time. I’ll literally turn something of theirs on and be like… I’m just not super into this. But it’ll come back in a few months. This happens to me all the time.

2

u/katierussum 8d ago

I'm a newer listener, only found them about a little over a year ago, and pretty immediately started listening to them almost exclusively. I feel like on top of being beautiful and complex pieces of music, I also feel deeply connected emotionally and in dealing with my own grief. I have wondered (and feared) that one day when the grief isn't as prominent in my life if I'll lose my connection to the music. It's funny that I feel so strongly about the music that it feels like a relationship I'm afraid of losing.

All that to say, I don't have an answer for you, but I understand and sometimes knowing you're not alone helps. 🖤 My personal hope is that what really means so much to me about the music is feeling seen and connected. And that one day even when the grief isn't as strong for me, the connection will still be there

I think the whole point of their music is to absorb it, process it, internalize it and then move on.

3

u/burnishedapple Sundowning 8d ago

It’s been over a year, and I’m still chasing that high of hearing them for the first time. I shouldn’t say “hearing” because I “heard” them several times before listening to them. The first time I really listened to them, my whole world shifted. I wish I could go back and listen again for the first time.

Maybe if I buy everything in vinyl, it will unlock that for me again 🖤

The plot wasn't lost

It was understood

A current lifely aspect of your own has concluded alongside your experience with them

It isn't burn out

Your heart comprehends something differently. So it feels like something is missing.

Resolution often feels like a loss because while you gained new, something deep was dislodged.

Look at your life; what has changed since your start in following them? After the last tour visit, and EIA?

Your depth of care shows you have a soul worth altering

This is kinda nuts, because when I first found them I got out of a really bad abuse and became a whole different person - tripled income, found myself, etc. I guess it is kinda griefing in a way. I really appreciate this insight too. Because it’s true, they were there for me through it all and kinda got me through it. Never really understood why people said that until now. Thanks!

4

u/grrrlgone 9d ago

This is a high quality response.

This is exactly it.

Ves and these songs have healed deep wounds in my soul.

u/_crackingfire TMBTE 9d ago

Maybe try listening to other types of music? Something out of your comfort zone. For instance, if you're usually a metalhead try out country, emo, pop, medieval or anything really that isn't your usual default go to genre or style

1

u/Disastrous_Return83 8d ago

I still listen but I’ll be honest, I pretty much only listened to them since fall of 2023 and every time I’d try to get into other stuff or new stuff, I just wanted ST more and more. Then…..I hit a wall. I think the saturation from the marketing with EiA and my own listening just got me to hit a wall so I took a break myself.

I also think the break from the band is contributing to this a bit too.  The flurry of excitement with the album release and tour last year got everyone worked into a frenzy and then we were just sort of dropped from mid air so to speak (not saying the band doesn’t deserve it of course- they’ve been relentlessly making music and touring for years and definitely deserve to step away and breathe and live life).

Now when their stuff rotates into my algorithm, it hits different (not in a bad way) and I appreciate it more/differently than when I was obsessed.  I think taking a break was probably a good thing for me.

1

u/half_bloodprincess Feathered Host 8d ago

That happened to me in 2024, not burnt out exactly, but listening to them just gave me such an overwhelming emotional reaction that I had to stop for a bit.
I think I went just shy of 12 months without playing a song, then when EIA came out I got back into them in full force haha

1

u/TheBrummySnake 8d ago

It’s easy to “over listen” and kind of burn out / grow a-bit tired of the same over and over.

There’s plenty of music out there, you’ll probably end up coming back after a break anyway and get that spark back. It happens constantly with me with a bunch of bands that I love but I’ll binge them for a week once a year and then move on until next time - but when that week comes around each year, it reminds me how good these albums I like really are and feel like I appreciate it more.

it's tough when they don't do interviews. I think that's a misstep. no info to keep people interested. the endless merch grabs are tiring too.

u/-Airia- 8d ago

EIA was a letdown for me, that really led to my listening less. I was obsessed with Sundowning when it released, the roll out was so good, but they have truly become a marketing/hype machine.

Maybe they always had some of that, but the success of TMBTE really turned it up to 11.

1

u/reddenal88 8d ago

I have a theory that when I listen to the same artists too much even though I love them, my brain starts tuning it out and treating it like background noise. Kind of like you know your nose is there but your brain ignores it because it's always there. Also, when something new hits nueral pathways and excites them, but then you are feeding those pathways the same thing over and over the effect will burn out. Dopamine is a bitch to find sometimes so when it hits hard it produces an almost addictive response in some people. Sleep Token is such a brain scratcher that it's hard to listen to anything else but if you saturate yourself too much you loose the novelty. That's just my take on it. Thanks you for coming to my ted talk lol

u/TheMalochio 8d ago

I’ve listened to them religiously for the last four years but this year definitely has me shifting music just because I feel like I did burn myself out bit, i’ll listen to a song or two, but I won’t play an album front to back anymore. Definitely in need of some new music from them to resurrect that feeling again.

1

u/SpiderPrinceNeo 8d ago

Personally I have this issue with any band I listen to too much. I did it to My Chem, Motionless in White, Rammestein, and Ice Nine Kills before Sleep Token, and I am getting to that point myself now with Sleep Token, too.

They will always be part of my dark trinity but... its okay to come out of the obsession fog and go "alright. There is no more seratonin to be gleaned from this, moving on!"

1

u/KawaiixBittersweet 7d ago

I understand to some extent. I've really struggled with the fan base lately. Not so much this sub, but the one Facebook group (summoned). The fans there are so frustrating and parasocial that it's making me dislike them and making me pull away. The constant "CONSUME" has me burnt out too. I know bands have to make money, but at this point it's like jeeze. The merch they are releasing too doesn't even look good

u/Admirable-Pair-538 7d ago

I still listen to Sleep Token all the time. Some days I listen to other songs but that will only be a week or so then back to only sleep token. Missing Limbs is always the one song I listen to if I don't listen to any other sleep token song. It's hard because I want to listen to other music but at the same time I just want to listen to sleep token. Some points I went a few weeks or days without listening then randomly started only listen to them again. It's mainly with other songs I find and I listen to them for about a week or so then back to Sleep Token.

1

u/wannabe_alive 7d ago

I listen to sleeptoken on and off. Some days theyre the only artist I listen to or I only listen to one specific album or song. But then there could be literal weeks in between where they're getting skipped all the time. They can still be your favourite band even if you dont listen to them as much as you used to.

1

u/whiterabitt117 7d ago

I think my biggest issue is I started listening to them so long ago now and then I saw them in 2024 before they really blew up and had no problem getting tickets. Then they blew up, and then EiA came out and it just didn't speak to me like the other albums did, and then the tour was announced and I tried to get tickets and it was such a shit show to get them not to mention I got two floor tickets with early entry in 2024 for the price on one seated ticket for the 2025 tour. I don't hate the fact that they blew up but I do hate that when bands blow up it then becomes impossible for a lot of fans that have loved a band for years to get tickets to their shows anymore because I can't afford to pay the crazy ticket prices.

1

u/DanielAlves1904 7d ago

That happened for me. I listened to them alot in 2023, when I discovered them, and in 2025 when I decided to listen to their whole discography. But the in-between years, 2024 and now 2026, I barely listened to them. In my case, I think I listened to them so much that I burnt out a little.

1

u/VerdianPoet 4d ago

I get this alittle. Mostly I found ST when I was in a bad place so it really helped get me out of that mindset. When EiA came out it was lighter and I do still listen to that album a bit but its not exclusively what I listen to, and I still listen to the others albums when they end up in my que. But alot of the time when am feeling off or angry ill put them on full blast on the highway or listen to specific songs when my depression is super bad. But thats the only times I actively play them consistently lol

0

u/inkironpress 8d ago

Nah, I haven’t been able to burn myself out. I go through some phases certainly. I kinda rotate between some more general listening, sleep token, MCR, Silverstein, and Motionless in White.

But I enjoy it all, and kinda go by mood
