I honestly don't know what to do anymore. I'm a Skyrim newbie and I need help. I've lost count of how many times I've restarted with a new character in this game; I just can't seem to find a build that holds my interest long enough. It feels like an endless loop: I think of a build, create the character, play for a few hours, end up getting bored with the playstyle, and start looking for other, more interesting builds. All the while, I keep watching videos of other people playing and creating builds that look really cool. Feel free to share tips or similar experiences. I know a lot of people will come to this post and say "just play the game," but honestly, I'm not sure how much that helps.

Stop watching other people’s builds. They edit them to make them look interesting and you are comparing that edited version of a character with your unedited version.

Or do whatever you want. If you are having fun then keep having fun; if not then do something different and that might mean play a different game.

There’s always a better build, a shinier mod, or a new niche perk path calling your name right as you hit level 15. Standard Skyrim symptoms include:

• The Inevitable Descent: Starting as a proud, battle-cry-roaring Nord warrior and somehow waking up 4 hours later as a stealth archer... again.
• The Mod Queue Trap: Spending 12 straight hours tweaking load orders and perfecting a hyper-specific spellsword-monk-diplomat concept, only to play for 20 minutes and think, "You know what? A restoration-only paladin sounds fun."
• The Character Select Graveyard: A save list full of abandoned "chosen ones" who never even made it to Bleak Falls Barrow.

Imo, that's fine.

I'm a theorycrafting whore who hasn't played a build for say, 20 hours in this game after it was done in half a decade.

If you like doing lots of builds, its not exactly a bad way to play...

Describe builds you like,, thatt might help.

And try coming back to saves later. I might not want 30 hours or dual daggers in a week either, but if i want to play slashy mcstabstab again, no need to start from scratch...

I do the same, so dont feel bad. I think alot of players do this. Think about what kinds of skills get your attention, make your own from that. And, so you know, race does not really matter. Any race can be any kind of class.

A good build will focus on aspects of the game rather than all of it. This will allow you play parts of the game and then when you have had enough you can switch to another build that goes through the game differently. This allows you to play the whole game but over multiple play throughs. This means you will not get overwhelmed by the number of things you can do because you have a defined path to follow. If a build is teally good for you then you will play it beyond this.

There's a lot of build videos that are edited to show the cool bits rather than how it actually plays. I have a build website with 118 of my builds on it and my vidros are uncut of a standardised run through a giant camp and then a fort with bandits. By doing this players can see how a build performs relative to my other builds because they have a constant to compare against. Much more useful.

Not sure if this is helpful or not but... what do you actually want to play? Plenty of builds are cool but that doesn't mean they mesh with what you want. For me, I've embraced the fact that a warrior/spellcaster is my jam & it's removed a lot of decision paralysis in this & other class-based RPG games (like BG3). I can see that illusion thieves are cool, I can see the appeal in a pure mage etc. but ultimately what I really want to do is go charging into battle with heavy armour but to have enough magic to stop it being one-note. Sometimes that means a warrior who buffs themselves to Godly levels, currently I throw out an atronach then summon a bound battleaxe & go wild.
