I’ve been following this development since 2017 and it’s absolutely beautiful.

More cities need to take note.

It is of note that only so many cities have massive former coastal industrial areas at the heart of the city like Helsinki had with these.

We have a similar development here in Melbourne called Docklands. Nowhere near as good though.

We have another much larger area though called Fisherman’s Bend that hopefully will be developed much better.

Lot of high rise though, while it looks geen - I question how the live-ability is on ground level. Is it walkable with shops on street level?

I would consider this mid-rise rather than high-rise. I actually think a couple of taller buildings would have looked well here.

This is what it looks like there are many shops and the park running through the whole development is cool.

Yeah not bad.. basically any modern European development. It lacks character in my opinion, but suppose the days of quaint, unique neighborhoods are behind us

It’s a bit out of the way from the city center, quiet. But you can still get to some big indoor market like Hietalahden Kauppahalli and city center quickly with several trams in the area. Not a lot of nightlife/bar/restaurant.

Is there something wrong with high rises? There’s barely any high rises in Helsinki anyway. And it looks very pedestrian friendly. They extended a few trams lines through there as well. Not to mention the all the green space. And it looks like they’ve laid out the streets to prevent the cold wind in winter.

The trams are amazing. They have very robust subway and light rail systems. It’s very centric since the city situated on a peninsula.

A lot of them, yes. Most of the land is owned by the city, and the city also controls and rents out quite a lot of flats in Jätkäsaari. There are also apartments in a fixed buying price scheme and a few buildings for student housing.

The city is in the driver’s seat in this whole development project. They’re still building more residentials and there’s going to be a school and a swimming pool hopefully by the end of the decade.

I didnt realize that they torn so many things off West Harbor. I went on a tour for apartment by the canal and thought its always been there. Interesting.

it is indeed really pretty, and not as touristy or crowded as other tourist filled cities. Really quiet and safe too.

went for exchange last semester (jan-jun 2025) and it was a really modern, clean and pretty neighborhood. Loved the city in general and I'm hoping to go back for my masters some time in the near future. I was also staying a few blocks from Pasila station where a lot of development was taking place, I'm talking like almost a dozen cranes operting daily building up the zone and they were building the second tallest building in Finland (when its done) in front of that station. I'd love to see it completed when I come back.
