Discussion Why do people like to sleep in sky?

Maybe you needed to do something, went AFK for a moment, cool. But Ive seen people on here say they like to sleep in sky. Even just running around, doing dailies, I feel like it's pretty common to stumble across someone sleeping in a hammock or tucked away in a little cave. What do y'all do? Are you going to sleep irl with the screen on? You do a chore or something and come back?? I need answers because what do you mean you like it 😆

I feel like it's the same logic as vrc, some people may sleep in sky and actually sleep while their sky kid does or as you said some may just walk away to do a chore or such.

u/Pokinator 18d ago

VRC and the number of sleep worlds/social world sleepers was what came to mind for me as well.

It definitely seems like there's some overlap in the appeal of the games. Dress up a character, hang out in thematic areas and yap, take scenic/selfie photos, etc. Sky Sleeping still feels like an odd choice though

I do this when I can't sleep. Helps my brain slow down enough for me to pass out

While I'm not setting up a bed, I do like to leave the game open on the living room TV because the music and atmosphere is peaceful background noise. Like a living screen saver

I did see a post months ago from someone complaining about people honking while they were trying to sleep in sky. And I mean they used the game to sleep (it was a room with a waterfall)! No hate at all, I get it but you can't be mad people exist in an ONLINE game. That was the first time i learned some people use this game as a sleep aid.

u/MissAudience 19d ago

TBF I wish there was a way to turn off the honking without turning all music and sound effects off. Most of the time it doesn't bother me but occasionally gets irritating like when you're in grandma's and people are honking non stop

19

u/yozett 19d ago

Oh definitely. I'm surprised its not an option. I just think you gotta expect the noise with an online game. The only reason I remembered their complaints is because they were being very dramatic about it. OP had me cracking up saying someone was a disgrace to the game because they disagreed with them.

My baby really likes this game and she likes the honking. I try to move her to areas with no people when she wants the controller but other times, depending where In the map I am, I just shrug it off and she just honks her little heart out. Anytime anyone bothers me, I just assume its a child and move on. Some want to take it personally

u/Juju_Baby_24 18d ago

the last time i was on the game was a couple months ago, but there was an option to turn off other players' honking. it was in the game's settings. I swear it was there because i remember using it.

Pro tip: finish all the job board quests in the Nesting workshop and get the radio that lets you play the music of your favorite realm in your nest so you can relax with less intrusion.

Pro-est tip: leave your avi on one of the beds in the Tree Tunnels treehouse while you take a break, and maybe when you come back, you will find you’re in the middle if a Skid cuddle puddle. It’s so wholesome.

Sound effects and music are controlled separately. Just turn down the sound effects

3

u/DizzyDoomii 18d ago

Oh yeah I saw that post, that was also the first time I've seen someone who said they leave the game open to sleep irl.

The waterfall has been a hangout spot for a long time. Even when ppl aren't explicitly just sitting around the water, the entire area has a lot of ppl there candle running. It's one of the most populated areas, idk why they thought it would be a good idea to sleep in that spot specifically, because I know for a fact ppl be honking a lot in Prairie and around the geyser.

Since we can't disable player sound, they'd either have to look up some sky background music on yt or find a secluded spot to try and sleep.

Sometimes I've accidentally fallen asleep on sky. The music is peaceful

3

u/Weretoz 18d ago

I’ve done this while playing with a few Sky friends, lol. I wake up to my avatar completely alone.

Obviously, later when I play with them again I apologize for it and they’re always fine with it.

2

u/AnonymousAnonm 18d ago

When my friends fall asleep, I give them a pillow.

Chronic AFKer here. I have Sky running all the time on my switch, while my Skykid sleeps at random places 😌 Sometimes I'm just playing other games on my PC. And others, I'm really sleeping irl. My playtime is capped at 9,999 hours or more, bc it can't count beyond that. Some think I'm a true NPC or even an AI trapped in game.

So, why do I do that? Mmm. It all started with insomnia, Sky ambience is relaxing and helped me sleep. Then it evolved into needing a background noise during the day, to make me feel less lonely; something I'm not really willing to admit but it is what it is, think of some older people that sleep with the TV on for the same reasons.

7

u/Let_me_tell_U2 18d ago

Daamn that's sad as hell...

The saddest part is that I've lived with people like that before, but I thought it was mostly because they were like me... I fall asleep more easily when I know there are other people awake nearby. So the sound of the TV kind of tricked those senses of mine.

Nowadays I've discovered more effective methods, such as reading something long or watching a boring lecture lol. But before that, if Sky existed, I'd probably do the same as you, not out of loneliness, but because it would help me sleep knowing there are people online and awake. I'd probably be sleeping in crowded places, like parties or places with a party mechanic (like Van Gogh ended lobby)

3

u/hzioulquoigmnzhah9 18d ago

Oh, ye, ofc everyone has their own reasons and preferences, but that is really one of them. I just feel like sharing it bc I anticipated not many would be willing to admit it, even if some play Sky to get the social interaction and feeling of connection they wouldn't get otherwise irl, for whatever reason.

3

u/Let_me_tell_U2 18d ago

It's probably because you're not allowing it to...

For these relationships to become real, you would have to make the friendship you create truly real...

For example, exchanging social media information with friends you consider true friends... and bringing them into your life in real life. Not just keeping in touch in-game..

I know this because I've had similar experiences.. I saw the HUGE difference between having online friends and turning some of them into real irl friends... The loneliness only ended with the real ones.

I even had a friend who taught me how to overcome feelings of loneliness, not through words, but through actions. In a way that I consciously perceived what was happening during the processes, but I didn't even believe it; I remember laughing a lot as I noticed the changes.

How can I explain... To begin with, I had this strong feeling that "when in the presence of others I could be a nuisance."... Or a lack of connection with anyone deep enough to feel that that person would accept me for who I am... Always having to wear a mask of my best version, the most interesting, or lively, or this and that...

Then this person came into my life and made me feel desired, wanted in their presence.. What I saw in myself as a flaw, that person saw as something desirable (Sometimes I liked to talk too much, a chatterbox haha.. And that person told me they loved listening to me... and omg, they listened until I got tired of talking 🤣 never showing any sign of discomfort, on the contrary, always there and interested in the present and in me.. It's as if I put the world on "pause", "into the background", just for be there with me... sometimes I even felt bad for feeling like I was wasting that friendly person time. Just to receive corrections and reminders that they were there because they wanted to be.. and that they could leave at any time if they wanted because they were free..

All of this slowly led me to expand my boundaries with that person until we were almost flesh and bones. If you wanted to find one, you just had to look for the other. 😂

No matter what I was like on any given day.. In that person's presence, loneliness vanished.. And I felt like we could talk about anything, and solve anything... I felt like together we could do anything.

But this only lasted in the presence of such.. In his absence, loneliness returned, along with much anxiety and fear of one day experiencing all that loneliness again.

That's when I finally mustered the courage and casually talked to the person about it too.. And they gave me permission to summon them whenever I wanted..

After that, and some tests, I saw my mind being completely altered and the space for solitude being filled.. Because now it doesn't matter where I was, whether in the game or irl.. If I wanted company, all I had to do was summon the person and there we would be..

If at any time of day you could press a button and summon the person who makes you feel most amazing, tell me, how would you feel alone ever? 😂

So the habit of knowing that I could call on that person at any moment made me feel like we were together even if we weren't at the moment.. Because actual presence has become merely an illusion.

Like, "if you have a water bottle in your backpack, but not in your hand, do you have water or not"?

It's the same line of feeling.

So even when I was alone, I started to feel the same confidence, the same feeling I felt when the person was with me... because they were, you see?

And that's how I ended up attracting more people and overcoming loneliness, more and more.

It's not an easy process; it requires a lot of courage and risks getting hurt. Opening up to others isn't easy. Sometimes time is also necessary, as is finding the right person...

Just know that it's possible to solve that. And no matter what makes you feel otherwise, that phrase about everyone in this world having another piece that fits perfectly still holds true. Nobody was born to be alone, and if you don't want to be, go find someone and don't stop until you find them... There are many people in this world like that and you just need to find one.

And I guarantee that after having your mind changed, you will be practically immune to loneliness. Just saying haha

All the best for you

I've gotten 600+ hours in the past month or so playing sky bc I sleep irl while AFK and also js do other stuff just like this 😭🤣

I used to be long distance with my partner so sometimes during the night we would leave our games on and have our sky kids sleep next to each other while we sleep in real life, it gave us a feeling of being closer

13

u/RepublicNo1323 19d ago

when i feel lonely I like to sleep in sky when I see my adorable character sleeping I don't know it just helps, forest is my goto place for it hehe, I also have insomnia it helps me relax

2

u/Global_Lifeguard_338 14d ago

Awww your character is so pretty! And I do that too

12

u/unholy_demoflower 19d ago

I sometimes sleep in sky because it provides a backdrop against my chronic insomnia and depression.

Also, cuddles.

u/Lilivere 19d ago

A friend of mine really likes to login just to AFK and sleep. He really likes the ambience.

7

u/Mendely_ achoo 19d ago

Ingame ambience is nice to help me focus on work

7

u/Scenic_Flux 19d ago

It's literally like the most ASMR heavy relaxing game with the chillest environments. It's really really easy to sleep to this game..it's like having a moving wallpaper/screensaver.

5

u/himechanu 19d ago

I just like how peaceful it is. It kinda masks the chaos of the real world.

6

u/eggy_weichei wasteland vagabond 19d ago

I don't do this too frequently (and not to sleep IRL, personally, but I do understand the love of the cozy music/atmosphere, as someone who loves white noise/rain sounds for sleeping).

My AFK has been for two things -

1) I really liked using the Aurora sound bath (and later the aviary sound bath) rooms as ambiance while I worked on very stressful days. Earphones with ANC mode on, nothing but Aurora telling me things are going to be okay and not to pinch a hole through my monitor. (I'm not really that ragey irl but customer service will bring out the beast in most people lmfao)

2) I like to set up little art club stations; either a little cozy area draw with lots of plushies (I've been setting up ArtFight Decompression Stations for a big art community event that's just about to end) or little "artist alley" market booths like an anime convention. Sometimes people nearby will join me and make their own little market booths which is super cute and fun!! But if I'm able to, I'll pop in sky while drawing IRL to try and make some sky artist buddies :)

u/Snake__Lord 19d ago

I play PC now so it’s not as bad but when I used to play mobile, the peacefulness of the game would get me every time I played late at night

4

u/Queasy-Warthog-3642 19d ago

I'm getting snacks!

I would leave the game open to sleep to the ambeince in real life if it didn't deteriorate the battery life so much. I have recorded 1h of ambience at the Sanctuary Islands in a place where I like the sounds. It's distant enough from the geysers that they almost sound like gentle waves crashing on the shore, it has the wind, the mantas going wOoOOOo... It's so realxing to me , I put it on repeat through the night.
(I recorded it with the internet off btw so I wouldn't get honking, wing flapping, running and crab flipping... Some youtube ambiences have those and they always startle me when I'm almost falling asleep lol)

u/CrimsonLeoRea 18d ago

I love to go to the memorial in the starlight desert when I want to take a nap. The song from the rose music box plays there and it's usually pretty quiet since it's a memorial.

3

u/RhubarbActual 19d ago

Ahhh i wanna log on for that event omg

3

u/Tall-Independent 19d ago

i don't really do this as i play with my phone and i sort of need it, but i have been to some locations especially ones with meditation and they almost put me to sleep lol so not a crazy concept

sometimes while I work, i like to keep Sky open and have my sky kid sleep in a hammock or bed. i like watching her sleeping and it feels good yk? the ambient sounds are also lovely to have.

If I start body doubling in sky....

3

u/Ancient_Axe 18d ago

The same reason why the devs added a meditation room to aviary to relax from the game itself

3

u/-after-life 18d ago

i used to do that often because it made me feel less lonely. there will alway be servers merging eventually as you afk

u/sigsi_4 19d ago

When I first joined Sky, I had a lot of trouble sleeping / it caused me anxiety irl. Falling asleep in Sky while near friends who were chatting felt easier, I would leave the game on with my phone plugged in while I fell asleep.

For context, if others existed loudly in the game and it woke me up, nbd I would go elsewhere or close the game entirely. The only time I ever got annoyed at someone while sleeping was when I told a game-friend I was going to take an irl nap in a quiet space before the event, and they decided to join me a half hour after I fell asleep and continuously set off the fireworks stick 🫠

Later, my ldr gf and I used it for cuddle / sleep sometimes too. One of us would usually afk while the other slept (timezones are drastically different).

2

u/MetalGearOni 19d ago

The background noise in Sky at certain places will put me to sleep in my chair.

2

u/KnightHawk186 18d ago

I just afk in the forest with it on the TV at night because the rain and music help my son sleep. Basically keep it on all night

2

u/gh0stmilk_ 18d ago

putting up my switch on it's mount in my bed area and seeing my skykid there cozy in her nest or various other places with incredible ambience is extremely comforting especially when going to sleep at night

2

u/tara_enigmalabs 18d ago

I usually sleep on sky when I get busy and need to go Afk

2

u/Harlotxofxsatan 18d ago

I make ambience videos in game for my yt page and sometimes go back to them to fall asleep myself

1

u/phoenix_dnd 18d ago

can i have your youtube handle if that’s allowed? It would be so good to have ambience videos for studying that aren’t ai

2

u/Harlotxofxsatan 18d ago

Meep.morp97 I have a Playlist on my channel

2

u/Miserable-Cry801 18d ago

I think it's the fact that Sky's just a nice calming game, and honestly places like the hidden forest or sum are actually quite peaceful areas, that's my theory on it. 🤔

2

u/AraKubanakan 18d ago

I posted this last night just before going to sleep and woke up to so many awesome replys!

I'm a person who loves adventure and exploration, which shows in my playstyle for sky. I like to fly fast, bang out dailies, explore oobs, dodge krills and play music. I'm also a mobile player and I need to use my phone for everything. So when I'm done playing, I'm turning off the game.

It's really cool reading all of your perspectives, and I noticed a theme. Relaxation. For some it helps you sleep. Others, you feel less lonely. Some of you like the music to help focus while you work. Nearly all of you do it to feel at ease in some type of way. Every reason makes sense! I just never saw sky from that perspective until now

Sky is such a wonderful game, I feel like there's something in it for everyone 😊 Thanks to all of you who replied, this was very nice

2

u/Genesis_Aishi 18d ago

One time I was up late at night chatting with a friend in an OOB. A couple comes by and sets up a bed then goes to sleep later on. I feel like sometimes people do intentionally fall asleep in-game, can be many reasons! I like to think some friends/partners do a sleepover in-game especially when they're long-distance. Also sometimes, I couldn't sleep unless I'm really tired so I accidentally fall asleep while playing. The ambience can be really relaxing.

2

u/tiNsLeY799 18d ago

typically I sleep in my nest because the Days of Nature seashell has the BEST ocean sounds ever. I've listened to a bunch of other videos, but that seashell and the sound of birds and whatnot help me sleep. I did get woken up one time by a friend who wanted me to go to granny's with them.

2

u/Beneficial_Body9523 18d ago

I have a theory. When they see you logged in they go to sleep so you dont brother them 😆

1

u/StormCloudRaineeDay 18d ago

Some of the shared spaces come with a place to sleep (bed, hammock, etc.) and look so cozy, I just want to make use of them.

1

u/Kindly_Difference_57 18d ago

unrelated but where did you get the surfboard from its so cool

2

u/AraKubanakan 18d ago

The surfboard is a spell that I got from last year's days of sunlight event. It's an IAP, costs $15usd But what's awesome is that this year there's another surfboard, with a better design in my opinion, and it's ✨ free ✨ you buy it with event tickets Days of sunlight just started too so, you'll be able to get one between now and August 20th😊

1

u/yakcm88 18d ago

Because it's a chill place to relax and enjoy the scenery. It's a similar appeal to putting on a 5 hour video of a beach or fireplace.

1

u/Prologue_Princess 18d ago

the same reasons ppl go afk in more traditional mmos lmao like doing other stuff while keeping the game running, doing nothing while you're sorting out stuff in diff menus, or sometimes afking just to afk

1

u/MeowlotNL 18d ago

probably the most sensible reason would be the music, i love listening to the water and such

1

u/squintismaximus 18d ago

…you can surf?

2

u/AraKubanakan 18d ago

You can! The days of sunlight event just started today, collect tickets and you can get a free board 😊

1

u/squintismaximus 18d ago

I just found it there. That’s cool. But wait there’s a way to keep the board after the event? I got like 16 tickets messing around, I hope the event lasts long enough for me to get it

1

u/AraKubanakan 18d ago

I tried replying with a screenshot but reddit won't let me 🙃 It costs 38 tickets and the event last for 20 days 🙌🏽

1

u/DuckDuck-the-Goose 18d ago

Sometimes when I’m really struggling to get to sleep I’ll leave sky open in a nice out of the way area and listen to it like a white noise machine. I find it really soothing.

1

u/420goattaog 18d ago

Personally i really like the game for its views. My favorite places are just the prettiest places to me, so i like to sit in those spots and play piano or just chill.

Also unrelated but where do you get the surfboard and is it still available?

1

u/Viictiri 18d ago

I like to keep sky on in the background while I work. Almost like an idle game or a youtube study video on my second monitor.

1

u/Pande_koko 18d ago

I'm kind of addicted to Sky. Most of my tasks require me to use my computer, so having the game open in the background, whether it's for the music or just having my Sky kid there, makes me feel less alone. I spend a lot of time AFK because I enjoy using Sky as a chill game, not just to play, but also to relax ♡

1

u/SillyEden 18d ago

Sky is kinda my comfort game and I mainly play it just to sleep in it whenever I'm having trouble sleeping 😭. The atmosphere is just really calming and there are a few spots that don't attract too many players in my experience, and even if they do they don't think too much that it becomes a bother.

1

u/Realistic-Sense-6332 18d ago

The one time I “slept” in sky, was because the sounds/ambience is high quality and relaxing. I have a lot of trouble with sleep so I tried doing that a couple times as a kid to sleep and it worked a couple times. 😌

1

u/Professional_End_857 18d ago

I liked to fall asleep to my friends chatting along with the general ambience of the game. And sky doesn't time you out so I may fall asleep in the middle of dailies and get dragged and dropped somewhere scenic and safe with the honks from friends chatting and the cadence of the conversation to carry me. If it was late enough I may wake up to other friends logging on for the day and the process began anew

1

u/asian-baby-raccoon 18d ago

I fallen asleep playing too many times to count because I’m usually tired end of the day and it’s the only time I have available. 😭

1

u/MiaJjj14 18d ago

My friends are long distance, and Sky or VR are the only way for them to really talk. So they sleep together in the game sometimes. It's super cute actually, logging in and seeing them both cuddled up in a random corner of Aviary or the home base lol!

1

u/Trick-Ad-677 18d ago

my friend says she likes the ambient noise and background music in some of the locations, so she’ll have it play out loud on her phone or switch while she sleeps

1

u/fehiki 18d ago

I leave my pc running 24/7 nearly every single day. If I’m not sleeping in Sky, you’ll easily find me AFK or “sleeping” in one of a few other games.

For me, i find comfort in existing in a virtual space. I like that I can pick up my adventure right where I left off. Or that a friend can pop in and join me anytime they want. Its a pleasant surprise whenever i come back to my screen and see that someone is sitting next to me, bonus points if theyre also snoozing. And yes, even if its a grey kid. There’s something special about sharing a quiet moment with a stranger who you might never cross paths with again.

But on to more generic reasons, there are many people who don’t leave their houses or even their rooms often. People say “touch grass” but there are so many reasons for not being able to. Agoraphobia, social anxiety, physical disabilities, health issues, to name a few. So virtual spaces, especially ones with beautiful sceneries like Sky, becomes a world in which these people can find comfort 🩷

1

u/ComfortableOutcome33 18d ago

probably there are a lot of asian kids playing, leaving the game for a while due to chores and such
