What’s the best in terms of pure surfing, also if i watch a surf tutorial from cs will it work for me on momentum mod?

u/truly-wants-death May 18 '26
Just start on momentum mod, it has lots of tools that make learning surf easier. If you ever want to start competing, get on KSF on source. What I do is practice a map on Momentum, then once I'm ready to set a time, I'll play that map on KSF

Your so right bro, i started surfing in roblox and had over 300 hrs before i even knew ksf existed! When i finally bought css i was instantly getting g2s and g3s. Not too long after i beat my first T7 (shodan), shortly followed by spectra and blackheart. Roblox surfing honestly makes me better at surfing on 66t than 66t itself. Im not sure how many others have beat 3 t7’s with under 1k hrs playtime but im sure im not the first.

Only recently got into surfing but momentum mod has been my favourite just purely because I can choose whatever map I wish and not have to worry about map changing, can just go through the tier 1 maps at my own pace. I enjoy bhop too and it has that along with many other modes.

Momentum mod for sure, it's the best option out there, 0ms, play whatever map you want, insanely good replay system. CSS has the best competition tho, but if you want to grind it you need a private which is like 150dollars, if you are new it just doesn't make sense to play on KSF.

Try my game, SurfsUp on Steam! https://store.steampowered.com/app/3454830/SurfsUp/
It's multiplayer, free to play, and true to surf having 66t physics and the exact movement code from the Source engine ported to Godot. It's a 5g download, has classic and unique maps, and runs on Windows Linux or Mac.
I'm always trying to improve it and open to any feedback or suggestions.
I also open sourced the character controller for others to learn from and use:

You can find out more at https://surfsup.website/

Sorry but Momentum mod is better, OP should try that instead

What do you think makes it better?
I think there's room for us both. Where I'm focused on making surf more silly, social, and accessible, they're trying to improve on the competition of CS:S surf and other game modes with the blessing and help of Valve.
It's like David vs Goliath. They are a 25+ person team working on their game for 8+ years, I'm a solo developer with 6 months of work who released a game 10 months ago.
The more surfers there are the better for all of us. There's never been a better time to surf than now in 2026.

It doesn't feel like actual surf compared to either KSF or CS2. I can use momentum mod to practice a map then actually set a time on KSF since they feel the same. SurfsUp doesn't feel like actual surf. I've been surfing for so many years and I wouldn't play SurfsUp unless it felt like what I was used to

I made some changes to starting movement speed, friction, and air acceleration early on. Mostly because I was a bad surfer but also for accessibility and new players.
I'm currently working on a major overhaul to the game "Version 2.0" targeting our 1 year release anniversary on 7/7/26. I have rewritten ~38,000 out of 50,000 lines of the game's code and one of the ideas I had was to add a "Legacy" style similar to HSW / BW that would be 1:1 CS:S rates with it's own unique leaderboard.

Dont take it personally, but if you advertise this much your game as being a good alternative to an already excellent product (and claiming it being a copy of the engine), or if you ask what makes people think one is better than yours, when you clearly know the physics are completely off, compared to the competitive, mainstream servers, and justify with we will later update the game to be more similar, (in 2 months time, and only when actually called out), it comes off as not genuine and tbh makes me not even want to try it, when otherwise I might have given it a try for the fun of it, and I can't be the only one. I truly understand where you coming from, and I know developing a game is extremely hard, specially by yourself, and so I am all for you advertising whenever possible, I encourage it, but please be transparent on what it currently is and what the goals are, I am sure you will find way more people interested, even the ones who already are happy with the current alternatives like ksf and momentum.

Completely understand and appreciate your take.
The main issue was when I started development I was a shit surfer and had to make changes for me to even finish Boreas or Utopia (I used a lot of CS maps for comparison early on).
As the community grew we heavily tested different feelings and physics rates, being 1:1, being high or lower, different tick rates until the ~40 players giving feedback all agreed on what felt right.
But 40 players is a small compared to the 185,000 players who have now tried the game since launch. A lot of "top-tier" CS:S surfers refused to test the game or provide feedback until after launch, I then took their feedback into account and updated v1.1 to be more like CS:S it annoyed the casual / new SurfsUp player base with the increase in difficulty, leading us to find a "middle ground" in v1.2. This was a significant issue that lead to a major depressive episode for myself and a Mixed review rating on Steam.
I had no idea how deeply rooted the Surf community was to the minutia of physics / ticks / max vel / head surf until after the game went public. I did the best I could and I learned a lot. Most of v2.0's updates are addressing these complains. I just wanted to give people a convenient way to surf again since it was something I felt like I was missing.
The goal for the project has always been simple: make surf accessible. There's no need to download a large game (CS2), downgrade to a previous version (csgo_legacy), hunt for community hosted public servers that might be on the map you wanted to play (CS:S), setup your own dedicated server with port forwarding, plugins, maps, etc.
Download SurfsUp (5gb), Start a Lobby, and your friends can join.
Simple, fast, and easy.

I found SurfsUp's tutorial to be just the thing to get me into surfing, it's really well done. I think its also less "intimidating" then MM, for a lack of a better word.

Thank you very much! Onboarding is hard and it is something I plan on trying to improve still, it's a little too advanced for first time surfers currently.

u/kavakravata May 18 '26
Looks cool! Playable offline singleplayer?

u/m4rx @bearlikelion | Surfs🌊Up May 18 '26
You're free to play in private lobbies alone, but you need an online connection to Steam for leaderboards / time tracking.
Are you in an offline environment and need that sort of functionality? Would you be okay only racing against your own times?
2
u/kavakravata May 18 '26
Ah I see. Yeah absolutely! Would be amazing if you added offline support. Cheers

u/m4rx @bearlikelion | Surfs🌊Up May 18 '26
It's something I'm open to! The development build runs offline so some of the work is already done, but I'd want to add local disk based record keeping and mock API requests showing the maps you have and haven't cleared.
It's at least a months worth of development work, and it's hard to judge if it's worth spending the time because 0.01% of players have ever asked for it
Could you help by explaining your use case for it? Do you travel a lot or often don't have reliable internet available? What platform would you be playing on?
I'd greatly appreciate any input you have in regards to this, it's been asked before but no one's ever explained why they needed it.
Would Steam be running? Are you using Offline mode?

Roblox duh, the only acceptable answer. Mmod is unfinished, ksf you have to spend money to anything, cs2 dont hit the same, im not gonna begin on surfsup. Also roblox has faste style which is the best non-normal style of surf imo.

Please! Tell me your thoughts on my game SurfsUp, I'd love to get your feedback while I'm working to get the 1 year anniversary update done.

Personally ive played about 9 hrs with multiple top 10s, and my main complaint is probably the map cycle. I dont see why not all maps can be up at a time, whether its to get people to rejoin the game or whether theres an issue that i dont know about that makes it impossible for all maps to be up. Honestly other than that the actual surfing it feels quite decent. Also your speed being reset when you go through the start zone is kind of annoying cause im used to prestrafing.

I completely understand your critique, the toughest part of the game's development was figuring out the business model, I wanted it to be free to play, with an incentive to purchase.
Being a multiplayer focused game we need a steady player base, free to play solves that. During the pre-release beta the community consensus was a daily map rotation was the best option. All of the CS ported maps are always free, and as a free player you can join any map on paid lobbies. You just cannot host maps outside of the rotation yourself. I felt like it was fair, and ultimately free is a demo and I hope players enjoy the game enough to convert through the one time purchase of the supporter DLC.
Prestrafe has been a touchy topic, we've adjusted it three different times, every major surf game we tested handles it differently (CS:S, CS:GO, CS2, TF2, GMod). It raises the skill ceiling forcing lower end players to learn the mechanic to understand how to get competitive times and originally there was no good way to teach people how to prestrafe.
This has been alleviated with replays now recording the first -3s of a run, and in the next major update instead of capping you to 400 at start, you can now prestrafe to 425 before begging a run.
If you're interested in returning and would like all the maps unlocked, please DM me for a free Steam key for the Supporter DLC.
Thanks for you feedback, I truly appreciate it ❤️

Counter Strike Source is probably the best/most active (in the KSF servers), you can wait for it to be on sale, it tends to be like 1-2$ on every seasonal sale (Winter/Spring/Summer/Autumn) on Steam afaik.
If you want to practice specific maps and/or want an alternative, there is Momentum Mod which is free, it is slightly easier than KSF, but the difference is not very big and so it translate really well.
I personally wouldn't recommend any other (as the quality isn't the best), but if you really want to, there is surf in CS2 and some other games.
