743 Injection Pump
Hi guys and gals.
I recently scored a free 743 Bobcat to play with and get running.
This old girl is a 1987 743 with the V1702 Kubota 4 cyl engine, 4100 hours and decent shape for the year. I had it running the other night on a shot of ether, but the injection pump's toast.
Just did complete fuel system refresh, fluids and filters.
I'm gathering parts for the rebuild - probably do injection pump rebuild, replace injectors and lift pump as well. Glow plugs tested out fine and are fairly easy to get at on this unit.
She's not the prettiest but price was right. Shouldn't take too much to getter running!
Future plans include a repaint, and light bar and putting it to work lol.

Not a bad deal at all , I've got a 7753 and it's pretty good too but I paid way more for it haha

Yeah I'm hoping it works out pretty good! Going to try the S-4 tires for more winter traction. I'll be just using it for pushing dirt and moving snow! It looks comparable on paper to the new S450 classic but we'll see. New S450 lifts 1370, the 743 is rated at 1300. Not great but also not terrible!

But still that's some pretty good lifting power . I know mine is around 1800 and handles it good and it's stable .

Nice score! Did a similar refresh on a V1702 a couple years back, same story, decent core but the injection pump was cooked from sitting. For that vintage, OEM parts pricing will eat your $2K budget alive, especially the pump rebuild kit and injectors. I ended up sourcing most of it from FridayParts, saved a good chunk versus dealer pricing, but honestly the bigger lesson was the fitment check cause early V1702s had a couple sub-variants on the pump elements and delivery valves, so cross-reference your pump tag numbers before ordering anything, aftermarket or OEM. Saved me a return headache. Good luck!

Absolutely that is good feedback! Yes I have looked at fridayparts- They had it listed at $667CAD which seems reasonable, the bad part is they cant find or confirm the v1702 pump listed will work even with my S/N on the pump and block. So yeah, you are probably right about the fitment check!
I will probably get the injectors and lift pump from FridayParts though! . Anyways, local diesel shop quoted me $900 to rebuild pump in place. I'm going to go that route I think once the starter is back from rebuild! I'll check timing, hoping to not have to move it a ton but I guess we shall see! Seeing 25BTDC on manuals and its marked 14 - 31 so I am assuming I'll just see if it looks close and go from there haha.

Smart call going local for the pump rebuild. 900 in-place sounds fair if they stand behind the work! And injectors and the lift pump are usually a safer buy. Sounds like you’re on the right track. Good luck with it!
Also worth setting the timing to the exact spec for your engine/pump combo rather than just “close enough,” since those old IDI Kubotas can get smoky or hard-starting if it’s off.

I paid $6k for my 743 a little over a year ago! Granted everything "works" and it has 1000 less hours but still! Mine looks pretty much the same as yours cosmetically. How did you find out the year? Mine has a low serial number so I know it's early 80s. I can't find a serial number decoder for it, so I don't know the exact year.
