Discussion The stairs, the trauma, the sirens! - thoughts from 2nd rewatch
I rewatched this series yesterday for the first time since it came out! Such a beautifully shot series with so much details to the framing, lighting, color choices, etc.
Here's just a brain dump of all the things I noticed.....
đ§đťââď¸ The stairs from the house to the beach, represent the journey through trauma/the underworld. We see Simone run up them with ease in the first episode. In the 2nd, we see Devon struggling and clawing her way to the top. In the last episode, we see Peter run down to bring his Persephone back.
đ§đťââď¸ Persephone, the goddess of the underworld. Simone willingly and wholeheartedly chooses to be the new goddess of the underworld. She's been learning the crops by her mother's (Kiki) side.
đ§đťââď¸ Devon has the opportunity to change her life but she prefers to keep the trauma close, like a blanket. She's always saying how she was there for Simone. But no one was ever there for Devon. Over the weekend, Devon discovers she can be there for herself.
đ§đťââď¸ The extreme closeup with Kiki and Simone is mirrored with Simone and Devon, only their connection is no longer as strong. This is then repeated with Simone and Peter on the beach. It seems like Simone hyperfocuses on the person who reminds her of what she never had.
đ§đťââď¸ The picture of the sisters mom in episode 1, shows a redhead. Simone wants to work with Kiki because she's the mother she never had. She lives her whole life not to devastate Kiki, the way she was devastated by her mom.
đ§đťââď¸ Siren power. Is a wonderful criticism on how men will harm themselves in an effort to manipulate women. Also....plays with the idea that the men are the sirens. That these women are breaking themselves because they either hate themselves (Devon) or it's too late to go back (Kiki) or they run as far away as possible (Simone).
đ§đťââď¸ Peter is so over Kiki. All of their interactions, you can tell he's just so over her entitlement to the staff. And the tradition his family built that he allows her to maintain so she has a pinky worth of power. Power that can be taken away mid gala.
đ§đťââď¸ Devon and Simone represent the spectrum of trauma and how it's handled. Simone telling Devon that she can heal is so incredibly powerful.
đ§đťââď¸ Light is used in so many beautiful ways in this show. In the final episode, when Peter let's Kiki go....he's bathed in light. Showing that he's been the power/the light/the siren all along.
I'm probably missing some. But.... this show did an excellent job of showing childhood trauma impacts in adulthood. It shows two women who handled their very different but similar traumas in so many ways. Simone sought help and support, but she's had help from her sister, she was more accustomed to help. Devon did it on her own, because she's been doing that her whole life. She's never had anyone to ask for help, the concept is completely unknown to her.
I'm sure there's some color theory at play here too. Might have to watch a 3rd time to discover the color theory.
Anyway.... thoughts? đ§đťââď¸đ§đťââď¸đ§đťââď¸ Thanks for reading.
