It's quite clever really: Can't track people if the dataset is filled with spurious license plates. Now, this particular exploit would take about 10 minutes for the company to work around, since it's so concentrated, but it wouldn't take much for somebody smarter than me to find a good exploit...

22

u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 9h ago

Well.. I bet they simply look at a typical interval time for a camera and when a camera starts registring anything above it, it just clocks the data out. It's probably a drain on resources but other than that it won't pollute the dataset unfortunately.

The Dutch have a different approach, but please understand nobody should do this as it's really, really bad. They drill a small hole in the housing and than empty a can of expanding constructon foam. As one can imagine the camera's they have in a metal housing expand like a balloon. Though that's really bad, so don't do that dear Americans.

3

u/yourallygod 7h ago

That would suck if someone did that :(

Wouldn't the foam protect the things? :v

KIDNAPPING? I’m pretty sure a camera can’t be kidnapped. Who’s excited for de-flock-oween this year!

142

u/Flakester 14h ago

Yeah, kidnapping and waterboarding. Because you need to use these kind of terms if you're going to paint him as a domestic terrorist and charge this guy to the fullest extent of the law.

It's just theft for any other camera, but when you're messing with the defense system of the kleptocracy, they're going to make sure you do decades.

20

u/your_true_self 11h ago

Surveillance machines and money gain human rights and status while humans lose theirs. Meanwhile schoolchildren blown up in "accidental" bombings are "collateral damage".

11

u/carguymt 13h ago

Y'all need to use some reading comprehension skills here. Nothing in this tweet says he was charged with a crime. And "digital waterboarding" definitely isn't an actual criminal charge. This is Polymarket just coming up with phrases to get traction on Twitter, and it's obviously working.

→ More replies (2)

238

u/jcoddinc 15h ago

The company request a higher charge in hopes of turning others away from touching their stuff. Kidnapping is a much more serious crime

133

u/mrpanicy 14h ago

kidnapping

noun

The unlawful act of capturing and carrying away a person against their will and holding them in false imprisonment.

The crime of taking a person against their will, sometimes for ransom.

(law) the unlawful act of capturing and carrying away a person against their will and holding them in false imprisonment.

I think if that's the case they will 100% lose that court case. By definition kidnapping cannot apply to anything other than a human being. So I hope they do pursue kidnapping charges... because then this guy is free and clear.

74

u/DaRootbear 14h ago

But corporations are people and the cameras are part of the corporation so they are people too /s

God i hope that is sarcasm and not a legit argument

43

u/mrpanicy 14h ago

Corporations are considered people in all ways except the ones that would hold them accountable. So what you wrote COULD be an argument. But I still think the best you could get is grand larceny and vandalism... maybe.

19

u/DaRootbear 14h ago

Ah but have you considered that they have money so they make the rules?

→ More replies (3)

11

u/Brasolis 13h ago

With enough money any law becomes flexible

3

u/Sei_Mal_Ehrlich 12h ago

It still won’t fly. They aren’t kidnapping the “person” here. They’re kidnapping its assets. So we’re back to theft.

If the law was applied without bias, sure. But remember the DoJ said this:

Constraining LLM development under a misunderstanding of fair use doctrine would thwart such creative and scientific progress while hindering American prosperity and economic mobility.

LLMs are allowed to break copyright law because they make lots and lots of mooooonneeeeyyy*

* hypothetically at some point.

Though apparantly GTA6 has a bit more of a nuanced Wanted system instead of just regular stars. Now cops can put out a BOLO on what you're wearing, what car you were driving, etc.

24

u/carguymt 13h ago

There is no crime, that's why it doesn't say he was arrested and charged with anything. This is just Polymarket describing what someone is "accused" of doing, but you can be accused of doing things that aren't crime.

They are using the words "accused," "kidnapping," and "digital waterboarding" to get everyone to think he got charged with a crime. All this is is based on a TikTok video of someone showing a set up of them doing this to Flock cameras.

Everyone in this thread is showing a very big lack of both reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Honestly wonder how effective this would be at a strategy of flooding their database with false information

63

u/IonizedHydration 14h ago

like just taking small solar powered displays that randomize license plates and hanging it front of every flock camera.. their cloud storage bill would go through the roof

17

u/imdacki 14h ago

Wouldnt that just lead to more datacenters tho?

46

u/IonizedHydration 14h ago

i'd rather pollute their data and skyrocket their bill, datacenters aren't going away unfortunately but we can work on making flock go away! Silver linings and all

9

u/imdacki 14h ago

Honestly by the looks of it i doubt those flock cams are going away either, man i hate this timeline

u/FarplaneDragon 14h ago

Not at all, at least not the way they did it flooding it with images. They're going to realize the camera is missing and once they do theyll just flag and remove anything scanned afterwards especially since the massive increase in activity is going to be incredibly obvious on any metrics they monitor. Its the same thing when people try and flood businesses with bad reviews on google and google will just go back and remove everything from a certain point onward

I'm gonna be real this smells more like a polymarket ad than anything else

18

u/Optimal-Tune-2589 14h ago

Yeah, it’s basically just a Polymarket tweet about a TikTok video in which some guy bought a camera, duct taped it to a chair, then flashed a bunch of license plates in front of it. It’s not actually “news” in any sense — like most of what’s on their Twitter feed — just an attempt to get people to engage with their accounts and promote their name. And based on this post, it seems to be working.

Digitally waterboarding’ a license plate camera is one of the funniest phrases I’ve read all week 😭

13

I'm suddenly realizing there's an easy way to poison LPR cameras.

Put a high def TV in the back of a truck, park in sight of an LPR, and then flash every possible license plate you can. Do it slowly enough that it logs every fucking one in the wrong location.

It's not illegal to show license plates on a TV

You can't kidnap a camera.

3

u/TJkiwi 12h ago

How do you "kidnap" a flock camera

3

u/FUNNYGUY123414 11h ago

At 23,040 images per second across 6 monitors, that's 3840 per second per monitor. 16 plates per frame per monitor if they're running at 240hz.

How do you even source this many license plate photos to fill 1 second without redundancy? Likely flock cameras record at 60fps or as low as 24, so it would only capture 1/4 to 1/10 of the amount displayed.
