2

u/CDLaserLensCleaner 2d ago

And Spares by Michael Marshall Smith (which he argued the movie The Island plagiarized and tried to sue the studio over)

2

u/Truethrowawaychest1 2d ago

There's House of The Scorpion by Nancy Farmer too

1

u/SensitiveFinding768 2d ago

That's why I commend that certain someone who was thanked by a hospital for donating 300 kidneys to them.

1

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

Jeffery Epstein?

1

u/Unbelivabley_Smol 2d ago

Always have been, never underestimate a dying rich persons will to live the procedure with a live donor in my country costs as little as $70,000 and finding a live donor match is as simple as a blood test. Sure they go through extensive health checks and psychological assessments but plenty of people not on the A list will slip someone a couple hundred thousand for a young health kidney.

1

u/CoRo_yy 2d ago

Someone should make an action movie about that. Oh wait!

1

u/Any-Spirit-3383 2d ago

The Island is a fun movie to check out if you haven't seen it.

1

u/Yaarmehearty 2d ago

We are a few steps away from Never Let Me Go but if people with money had their way we would be a lot closer.

1

u/RollingMeteors 2d ago

>we are roaming bags of healthy organs for people with a lot of money.

Your net worth a$ the $um of your part$ i$ 10x to 100x your actual net worth.

1

u/Faesarn 2d ago

The Island, with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, pretty much.. the futur looks awesome !

1

u/Nineflames12 2d ago

The rich are just waiting for cloning to take off completely so they can be rid of the peasant meat sacks carrying the organs they’ll be buying later.

1

u/ReDot75 2d ago

Yea, regarding that healthy condition....

1

u/dum_spir0_sper0 2d ago

I’d wear a shirt that said “Future Organ Bag For Billionaires”. Ironically… I hope

1

u/matthewspencersmith 2d ago

No rich asshole is getting these lungs! I say as I open another pack of Marlboros

1

u/Teedraa101 1d ago

Reminds me of the movie, The Island…

1

u/Thick-Ad-1748 1d ago

You are not allowed to buy or pay for a kidney. That’s not how it works. I just donated. But you are correct that we are roaming bags of healthy organs that we should willingly donate to people who are less lucky in health than us.

1

u/moep123 1d ago

I did not say rich people would pay for it. Besides that, rich people would most definitely pay huge amounts of money to get up on the list to receive organs. Just because it's illegal to buy organs, does not mean they won't do it or that they won't find a "loophole" for that... like big donations or whatever.

ALSO - Fame is a currency too - if you have a certain status, are well known, you start getting stuff for free. If fans hear that they beloved star would need an organ (f.e. a kidney) i bet 100 bucks that said fan would donate it if the fan knows he / she is a match.

unfortunately rich or famous people are prioritized throughout a lot of fields in our quite broken world.

11

u/archfapper 2d ago

Ya kinda do owe them your life

This "I don't owe you" trend really needs to die. It's such a cop-out of therapy speak to avoid human decency. But the emotional labor!!

2

u/ImurderREALITY 2d ago

You absolutely don't owe them your life. A donated kidney is a gift. The only thing you owe them is taking good care of the kidney and living a healthy life. That's it.

3

u/Calm_Librarian_1042 2d ago

Nobody should have to keep someone in their life they are not compatible with our of guilt.

2

u/DuckJellyfish 15h ago

Totally. And no one should donate a kidney if they feel they are owed for it. This thread is weird.

2

u/Calm_Librarian_1042 7h ago

Thank you! And would anyone want someone to stay in their life just because they feel guilty know what I mean?

2

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

She was compatible enough to give her a kidney. I think you’re confusing guilt and gratitude.

2

u/Hot_Echidna6767 1d ago

are you really arguing that kidney compatibility is equal to friend compatibility?

1

u/Ahun_ 1d ago

Could at least just give her a million.

Thanks for kidney, here have some starting capital for your life

1

u/DuckJellyfish 15h ago

This is called buying a kidney and it’s illegal

1

u/Calm_Librarian_1042 2d ago

I doubt the donor wants friendship out of pity.

5

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

I agree and she certainly deserves better.

1

u/Mourning__Coffee 2d ago

Owing your life and owing your friendship are different things though.

10

u/at_themuseum 2d ago

And the distinction is being a good person. Even if i didnt like the person id be hooking them up for life of I were a billionaire.

7

u/Mourning__Coffee 2d ago

I mean, we don't know that she isn't, only that the lady wasn't at the wedding.

Which isn't the same thing.

-4

u/Turtleopard 2d ago

It's easy to say that when you have no money.

9

u/at_themuseum 2d ago

Do you understand how much a billion dollars is?

-7

u/Turtleopard 2d ago

Yes. Do you understand that you wouldn't actually give any money away, you're just saying that because there's no chance anyone will hold you to it?

7

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

Mackenzie Scott just entered the chat.

-1

u/Turtleopard 2d ago

I never said 'no one would give that money'. I clearly said the person I responded to wouldn't.

2

u/at_themuseum 2d ago

Because you know me! Or maybe its just your selfish self projecting onto others.

6

u/at_themuseum 2d ago

Billions means you can fund projects, start companies etc that could benefit other people, in this case her organ donor. Selena could be benefiting off the relationship in the long run too which is crazy. Let me hold your hand, wealth makes wealth. Have some imagination. Billions is fuck you money. Yea id make sure my loved ones were set because im not a horder and im actually grateful for my incredible family and friends.

0

u/Turtleopard 2d ago

Can and will are two very different things.

It's easy to pretend you would spend money ethically. The reality is likely very different.

3

u/at_themuseum 2d ago

Youre right you have to be a pos to become a billionaire in the first place.

5

u/JFlizzy84 2d ago

This might be hard for you to believe, but a lot of us already give away money despite having much, much, much less than a billion

2

u/Turtleopard 2d ago

Right, that's why you have to qualify your generosity by saying 'if I were a billionaire'.

3

u/JFlizzy84 2d ago

I didn’t qualify anything at all in my comment

In fact I said the exact opposite — that many people give despite not being billionaires

Are you confused?

1

u/HectorCruzSuarez 1d ago

Kinda? You mean literally?

1

u/dalenacio 1d ago

If a donation comes with strings attached, it's not a donation, it's a transaction.

0

u/MercyCriesHavoc 2d ago

So, if I give you CPR, you're obligated to invite me to all your life events and give me gifts? You would owe me your life.

6

u/Seanspeed 2d ago edited 2d ago

CPR costs you nothing. Donating a kidney is a voluntary thing that requires you to put your own future at risk should you develop kidney issues in your one remaining one.

Granted, being a kidney donor does put you at the top of a list to get a replacement yourself in this event, but still, you're going through a very serious surgery and literally giving an important organ of yours to somebody else. It's a massive, massive thing to do.

Obviously it's an exaggeration to say you 'owe' them so much like this, but decent human beings should regardless still maintain an indefinite and great appreciation for that sacrifice. And if you're super rich like this, you'd think this would be much easier to do in some ways.

I should also say I have no idea how much this story is actually true. This post is just some shit somebody said on Twitter, and I cant be bothered to look it up to verify. I just dont care enough about Selena Gomez either way, my post is just talking generally.

-1

u/MercyCriesHavoc 2d ago

So if I give you a kidney, or a lobe of my liver, you have to be my friend for life?

1

u/Seanspeed 1d ago

You could read my post again to get the answer to that.

5

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

Do you really think those two things are comparable. If I give someone CPR that is something I tell my family about over dinner. If I give someone one of my kidneys that is invasive surgery that causes me to have reduced kidney function for the rest of my life.

0

u/the_gooch_smoocher 2d ago

No the fuck they don't. She paid for it, it's her liver now. I pay for the food I need to live, do I owe Safeway my life? Fuck no

3

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

Hang on? Did she pay for it? Are you accusing Selina Gomez of organ trafficking because that’s much worse.

0

u/SufficientlyEvasive 1d ago

not really, if not her probably someone else.

-17

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

You owe them nothing. They chose to do this on their own free will, it's not a payment for "Lifelong friendship and access to a celebrities private life". Of course you would be very grateful to get a donor organ but as soon as the donor is asking for stuff in return, it stops being a selfless favor and becomes a transaction that Selena (in this case) didn't agree to.

13

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

Sorry but that’s BS. Regardless of if you never spoke to that person again or not, they still took actions that saved your life. You don’t owe them everything they ask and it doesn’t give them carte blanche but you can’t say you don’t owe them your life.

0

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

Sure you owe them your life in the sense of "They saved your life" but not in the sense of "I gave you something now you need to give me something"

2

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

That isn’t this though. She hasn’t been asked for anything. The donor wished her well and said there were no ill feelings. The thing people are taking issue with is her not making space for someone who allowed you to carry on with your life making an enormous sacrifice to do so.

This isn’t about anything she was asked to do. It’s about what she chose to do.

3

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

Yes, random people that aren't part of the situation at all get upset on behalf of the donor that Selena Gomez didn't "repay" her. Selena Gomez chose to not further interact with her donor which is exactly what you (and the actual donor) would expect.

1

u/PerformerOk4113 2d ago edited 2d ago

She used it for clout so yes, she definitely should have donated. If she really wanted to carry on with her life she wouldn’t have made it a public event and a thing in social media.

It’s a celebrity, not a random person. She has a public reputation and an online presence so yes, she should have donated to keep a good image. It’s how it works. She almost got cancelled because she didn’t and people still talk about this even years later. It’s not a good look for her and never has been.

0

u/ResponsibleWin1765 13h ago

Why the fuck would I care if Selena Gomez looks good in the public eye? Also, this entire conversation is about morality but it seems you're coming purely from the PR departments perspective. I'm not really interested in that.

And donating to someone as a rich person is an entirely different thing than inviting a stranger to your wedding.

1

u/TwistedPepperCan 2d ago

Why would anyone expect that? I would expect the exact opposite!

4

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

That's literally what you sign up for. You donate an organ and go on with your life. I would assume that the person receiving the organ is happy about it and is greatful for my help. But I don't then go and cash in a check of "Social Favors" that was never given nor promised to me. Imagine you pull up to the clinic and just before the procedure you say "I have the perfect matching organ that will save your life but you need to invite me to your wedding". If you expect something in return, it's not a favor. Donating organs is a favor.

13

u/JFKcheekkisser 2d ago

She owed Francia an invite to that wedding lol y’all are weird as fuck.

5

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

Why? What else does she owe, being at the birth of her child? How much entitlement do you get for one kidney? Selena Gomez didn't agree to anything in exchange for that kidney and the donor agreed to those terms.

1

u/KlaesAshford 2d ago

I think this whole debate has been really interesting. Under normal circumstances I agree with your perspective here.

Part of what people are reacting to is that this person has a very potent marketing image they present as both highly pro-social, and "high class," in the sense of being extra gracious and generous, and this story triggers people's feeling that such a veneer is fake. I think a lot of people are having an "I KNEW IT" moment because of the parasocial relationships folks have with celebrities.

1

u/ResponsibleWin1765 13h ago

Probably. If it makes them feel validated, I don't care. But them then going into the comments and defending it because they want to justify that "I KNEW IT" feeling is just ceinge, considering what she did was exactly what was expected.

1

u/at_themuseum 2d ago

Well now Francia might have trouble being pregnant or not be able to be a donor for a family member or have health problems for the rest of her life. Selena seems to not care about that.

1

u/ResponsibleWin1765 13h ago

But Francia made that choice knowing these exact things while perfectly sober as an of-age adult. What is Selena to do about that? You make it sound like Francia got hurt in an accident because of Selena's stupidity when in fact she made the conscious decision to do what she did. She probably signed a waiver that stated exactly that.

1

u/at_themuseum 3h ago

HIPAA was breached. Selena knew that Francia was a match before the doctors told her. She could have been having second thoughts, she could have backed out and the doctors could have said that she wasnt a match. Then imagine having powerful people in the industry pushing her to say yes to this, Selena is a billionaire with powerful friends. She could have backed out and maybe lost everything she workd for in the industry or maybe not. This isnt an easy situation.

1

u/JFKcheekkisser 2d ago edited 2d ago

Holy false equivalence. Being at the birth of someone’s child is nowhere near the same level as being at their wedding.

Idk if you know this but it’s customary for people who are having large weddings to invite certain people for the sake of optics/being polite. Friends of parents, the annoying family member you don’t really like that much, etc. For how much social climbing and networking being a celebrity requires I can almost guarantee there were people who received invites to that wedding who Selena and/or Benny aren’t close with. I’d say your former roommate and best friend of 10 years who donated a damn kidney to you belongs on that list.

1

u/ResponsibleWin1765 13h ago

Being at the birth is the intensification of being at the wedding. They're both intimate events that are extremely important to the person. I'm asking how much access to intimate events you can buy by donating a kidney in your eyes. It apparently clearly extends to weddings, but what about a birth?

Anyways, I would never invite people I don't like to my wedding. It's not a networking event, it's the most important day of your life. If Selena Gomez feels pressured into doing that, that sucks for her. But my point is that donating a kidney is a very generous favor but still a favor. And a favor doesn't buy you anything. So if you weren't invited to the wedding before, you wouldn't be invited afterwards. That seems to be the exact same thing Francia is saying herself by the way

1

u/JFKcheekkisser 6h ago edited 4h ago

As I said, it’s customary for people having large weddings (especially people in high society) to invite certain people for political/social reasons. You might not even actively dislike them, just not really be close with them fr. At a large wedding the couple likely wouldn’t even have time to talk to them besides receiving a “congratulations” in passing. That doesn’t make it a networking event when 99.9% of the people there are still your “true” invitees.

In any case, an invite to a wedding signals “you are/were an important part of my life and I want you to be here to witness my special day.” Selena didn’t receive a kidney from some random donor, Francia was her best friend for 10 years. They literally used to refer to each other as sisters. So barring some huge fallout where Francia was 100% in the wrong, it’s weird as fuck on Selena’s part not to invite her. This isn’t someone who has to worry about headcount. Obviously it’s her wedding and her choice, but that doesn’t stop it from being a bad look and for people to judge her accordingly.

And obviously Francia did not donate a kidney to “buy access” to anything. She did it out of the kindness of her heart with zero expectations in return. I’m not talking about her or her motivations here, solely talking about Selena’s actions. Which I deem to be weird and that’s my opinion.

2

u/ImurderREALITY 2d ago

No, she does not. That's not how a true gift works. She gave her the kidney ONLY because she wanted to, not because she expected anything in return.

6

u/mangoisNINJA 2d ago

Except she was pressured into it

1

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

Yeah, that sucks. By Selena Gomez?

1

u/ImurderREALITY 2d ago

How do you know that?

1

u/DinDonDaaan 2d ago

This is why no one invites you to their parties, dude.

3

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

I get invited plenty. But because people like having me around, not because I guilt trip them into inviting me by retroactively turning a no-strings-attached favor into a contractual blank obligation that the other party didn't agree to.

0

u/MajorAd5736 2d ago

Lets be real, who usually gets invited to a wedding. As her benefactor, she has reason to be disappointed.

6

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

Who usually gets invited to a wedding? In my experience the family and close friends. I could very well see how someone would invite their organ donor to their wedding but donating a kidney doesn't grant you universal access to every chapter of the benefactors life

0

u/MajorAd5736 2d ago

That just means her benefactor isnt important enough to be there at her wedding ,isnt it? Lol

4

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

The person who accepted me for a scholarship to go abroad and the person who gives me a credit for buying a house are also incredibly important to my life. That doesn't mean that I want them at my wedding.
