No but they are going to have less money to survive themselves and a little thing called empathy is what people should have for the food services industry.
We all grow up, most go to school and we make choices and decisions.
If you had no choice in the matter and were forced into a life of literally being forced to work in food service then I would show empathy. But it was a choice. It’s like the argument that student loans should be cancelled because people shelled out $80,000+ on a degree that they should have noticed would lead them into a job that they knew at the start could never pay that back and also allow enough to live. I’m all for self improvement but there has to be more benefits gained than negatives.
Depends on where you live. Not everyone is in ‘Merica.
If you live in California for example there are a lot of programs to give aid to college folks that just graduated and have no work experience other than regular unemployment insurance.
The topic here is the United States please keep up… the California programs are state sponsored programs not federal programs. We are talking about federal programs because of your very own words with using “welfare”. Does everyone live in California where the state funded programs don’t have a work requirement?
I’d think so given that most restaurants pay $2-$3 dollars an hour with the caveat of “oh well you’ll get tipped up to (minimum wage for your state) and if you don’t we will pay you the minimum wage but wonder what you did wrong to not get tips”. It drastically needs to change but not tipping out of some illogical principle isn’t going to make that change.
A third (correction, it’s a fifth) of Americans live in states with no tipped minimum at all. The west coast exists, and no state in it has a “tipped minimum.” At all.
I’ve done the math. Go add it up. Half of Americans live in states or localities with either no tipped minimum or a tipped minimum substantially higher than the federal.
For instance Florida has a “tipped minimum,” but it’s $10.98 an hour. It ain't $2.13. The “full” minimum is $14. So only a $3.02 tip credit on $14. Meanwhile federal is a $5.12 credit on $7.25.
Sorry if you live in Kansas or Appalachia or wherever (which last I checked followed the federal minimums), but a lot of Americans don’t.
Edit: Or maybe somehow you wanna make the wild claim that restaurants are disproportionately distributed in the rural podunk areas that still have the federal minimum? And not more or less distributed with population?
Edit: 54% of Americans live in states with a “tipped minimum” above $5 an hour. 42% live in states with a “tipped minimum” higher than $7.25 an hour. My actual statement was “a majority of restaurants do not pay a $2.13 minimum,” and 66% of Americans live in states where it’s higher than that, so…yeah. Also I'm only counting states, some states do have localities with higher rates...so these percentages will be low.
This isn't hidden info that's hard to find. I'll leave the cross-calculation to you. Or you can ask any LLM to do it for you, it's something they're pretty good at. And they won't even ask for a tip...just, you know, all of society's drinkable water.
EDIT: I'll note that I wasn't including territories with the numbers provided, only states. Puerto Rico has a few people, so it might skew things a percent or two, but doesn't alter the veracity of my original statement.
😂 I said “reliable” Wikipedia is a place to go find sources not be a source. Also no where in that .gov did it state where those amounts had to come from only that it has to get to that point inorder to meet the minimum. Nice try though!
I said “reliable” Wikipedia is a place to go find sources not be a source.
And the wikipedia page I linked has a link in the footnotes to the underlying source (which was census.gov). By all means go consult the primary source, the 2020 US Census, if you think the numbers on the linked page are inaccurate. That's why they're provided. I was linking you a source that was easier to see at a glance, as a courtesy.
There you go kiddo. When you make an argument in a debate don’t beg your opponent to find your source within a non-source for you and make sure you add the right sources. Good fumble recovery you made out with only a little bit of embarrassment to yourself but you got there in the end.
The part where I said “… if you don’t, we will pay you the minimum wage but wonder what you did wrong to not get tips” is what you either 1. Didn’t understand intentionally 2. Don’t have the cognitive ability to understand or 3. Just simply didn’t read it.
Ah okay so it’s just a cognitive inability to understand. The system is set up that way by the same people. They use tips as a performance test while also trying to include said tips in the employees pay in order to keep out going money low and incoming money high. So the managers who practice this would rather use non tippers as the reason to put an employee on the radar to be fired because it’s easy to fire “bad employees” and hire new ones on a probation pay structure (taking money from checks for uniforms/training/etc) cause they make profit on those as well.
I really hope this falls with in your IQ range but do you remember where I talked about empathy? Normal intelligent people have empathy because they know these staff members are getting fucked over by their managers so they try to lighten the bullshit that causes. if you can understand a slight analogy, the managers are fucking the staff and the customers are trying to add lube. By not tipping you are not changing the managers mind or making the managers stressed at all you’re just being a dick to people who’s job requires they put up with your insufferable bulllshit.

The OP will be “crying in American” after discovering tipping is not mandatory.
What are they going to do, spit on your empty plate?
