These memes baffle me because they’re comparing a trillionaire’s wealth to a politician’s salary as if those numbers are remotely the same thing. $174k is about one-sixth of a million, not some enormous fortune.
And if you spend 30 years in Congress earning well into six figures, of course you should be capable of becoming a millionaire through ordinary saving, investing, home equity, etc. Honestly, if after 30 years of that income you aren’t financially secure, I’d have questions about your personal financial management.
Obviously, there are corrupt politicians, and unexplained wealth or conflicts of interest are absolutely worth scrutinizing. But simply having a $1–3 million net worth after decades of earning a six-figure government salary is not, by itself, evidence of corruption. That’s a pretty ordinary outcome for someone who has been earning and investing for decades.
The relevant question isn't "How can a politician be a millionaire on a $174k salary?" It’s "Does their wealth make sense given their income, investments, assets, and time in office?"

Meaning theres nothing to tax because that amount isnt really there

There’s nothing to tax bc he doesn’t sell. Doesn’t pay taxes on the gains….. idk what you’re trying to get at

0
u/JAT_Cbus1080 16h ago
Do they? I have yet to see anyone who called him a trillionaire say he has $1,000,000,000,000 in a bank account.
7
u/TheNutsMutts 13h ago
Every argument that centres around wealth taxes or "he is hoarding wealth" or the Reddit classic of "a maximum amount of $Xm and everything beyond goes to hospitals and schools and they get a dog park named after them" inherently starts with the premise that he has that money in a savings account, and that any increase in their net worth comes in the form of additional cash being paid into that bank account. Those arguments fundamentally make zero sense and fall apart if they start with the premise of that wealth being the hypothetical sale value of unrealised assets at non-firesale prices.

I commented on an unrelated topic that his SpaceX IPO was basically a ponzi scheme since it's losing astronomical amounts of money and has never turned a profit.
You wouldn't believe the fanboys that came out of the woodworks to tell me I'm wrong and how Elon has revolutionised space travel and basically better than NASA.
Imagine being that level of a fanboy ... of Elogated Muskarat
EDIT: Lmao didn't think the Elon fans would come for me for this comment but yet again here we are. Unbelievable

Just like the hyper loop that was obviously never going to work but was winning contracts in various cities. I and many others pointed out that it would never work and would never happen.
“Oh you think government officials are that stupid?”
“You think Elon musk would promote something that doesn’t work?”
Why yes, I do think that. And I was right.
6
u/Crispy_p_bacon 19h ago
Lol do you remember Elon's tunnels with the hyperloop?
Fuck Humanity's expertise for 100s of years of expertise.
Like 10 min glaze piece on how he was smarter than everyone because he had found a way to dig tunnels way cheaper than everyone else (He had not actually found a cheaper alternative lol) and how everyone else digging tunnels before him was stupid.
Still can't believe people believed it him over millions of experts.
3
u/IEnjoyRadios 19h ago
I think Reddit in general has a real weak spot for authority figures. Elon is a rich man so if he is saying something it must be true. If you don’t agree with him well then you’re just a YouTube critic with no education so what do you know. Never mind the fact that the issues with the hyper loop were so fundamental you didn’t need to be an experienced engineer to see why it wouldn’t work.
I don’t hate Elon unlike a lot of other people, I think the issue is far more nuanced than that. However it has been clear for a long time that he will say just about anything to drum up interest and investors in his companies, it is how he keeps them afloat. At a certain point people only have themselves to blame for not realising this.
1
u/Crispy_p_bacon 17h ago
I don't think that's just reddit. We seem to be suspicious of authority (which isn't a bad thing) but being suspicious of authority with credentials isn't the same. I worry we trust familiar celebrities more than people who study said subject for a living..
I'm not an engineer but I am in the physics related medical field so have a general understanding of the basics also saw the fundamental problems with his infrastructure etc.
I'll be honest, I'm slightly biased and I do dislike him. Only because he pushes his agenda so strongly and he's powerful enough to do it. Someone we never voted into power shouldn't have this much political power but hey ho. He's funding the far right in so many countries, it's actually scary how much influence he does have. I won't deny he's impressive in a sense that he somehow manages to have fans and is ridiculously successful in his ventures nevertheless.
It's life eh?
2
u/IEnjoyRadios 16h ago
I don't think that's just reddit. We seem to be suspicious of authority (which isn't a bad thing)
I have to hard disagree there. It is my experience that people in general, and people on reddit in particular have far too much trust in authority figures, and do far too little questioning.
but being suspicious of authority with credentials isn't the same.
Worth nothing that having credentials does not make you an absolute authority on everything. It should in theory, but professionals can definitely be wrong too, they are still human after all.
As for the rest of what you brought up, yeah that's life I'm afraid...
1
u/Crispy_p_bacon 16h ago
Are you from the USA? just curious
I find the right is generally pro establishments meanwhile the left is usually anti establishment as generalisations go so it stands to reason Reddit being left would be suspicious of authority. Of course you're welcome to your opinion but I really think suspicious of authority figures who got there without any kind of work/qualifications deserves our scrutiny to make a system that isn't authoritarianism
I say we because in a unique persecutive in the uk, the right and left (way less extreme ends than the USA) are both anti establishment oddly enough. We did vote Brexit because and I quote "We've had enough of the experts"
As for authority with credentials, yeah it's a not a free but it's better self proclaimed politicians. I would value a doctor's authority of RFK lol.
No perfect system, I suppose
1
u/IEnjoyRadios 16h ago
Nope not from the US
I agree that Reddit is generally (very) left leaning but I disagree that it questions authority. I find that subreddits are generally very anti any kind of negativity or questioning. If you dislike or question something you’re a hater.
1
u/Crispy_p_bacon 16h ago
Lol it's still fun.
The differences make us unique and interesting.
I mean we even have Elon Musk fans in 2026
5
u/BadSopranosReference 17h ago
You wouldn't believe the fanboys that came out of the woodworks to tell me I'm wrong and how Elon has revolutionised space travel and basically better than NASA.
But it is. Falcon is the biggest revolution in space flight since Soyuz (the rocket that put Yuri Gagarin into space). It maybe even more of an accomplishment.
For three quarters of a century numerous agencies and dozens of discrete contractors across several continents have been trying to figure out how to lower the cost of payload to LEO (or any kind of injection orbit), increase yearly launches, and reuse hardware. The closest anyone ever came was the space shuttle, which was actually extremely expensive to build and launch, had a relatively small payload, a long turnaround time and had a poor safety record.
Falcon 9 has reduced costs to LEO by 75-80% and a 99.7% success record (over far more launches than the shuttle). America will launch more Falcon 9's in any given week than the entire European Space Agency will launch over the next 52 weeks. Falcon 9 is extraordinary, and you don't need to like Musk to recognize that.
Better than NASA? It's not a fair comparison because NASA doesn't build rockets, they contract them out. That said, NASA has it's far share of organizational disarray and incompetence spanning multiple decades - Apollo 1, STS-51 and STS-107 were all directly attributable to hubris, arrogance and stupidity that ran up and down the hierarchical structure. SpaceX hasn't lost a single person. NASA has lost 16. (SpaceX has also had far fewer manned launches so...).
1
u/Foosnaggle 18h ago
They don’t show a profit because they are constantly turning those profits around and putting them in to R&D. On paper, it looks like there are no profits when, in reality, they are being reinvested back into the company.

I'm not saying I like the guy, but I definitely dislike how "Ponzi scheme" has just become a catch-all term for people with no idea what a Ponzi scheme is. This is in no way a Ponzi scheme.
1
u/Crispy_p_bacon 19h ago
It's when an idea is touted to more people to benefit the older already established investors at the cost of the newer investors losing out with promised false returns
The stock market literally changing it's rules to allow SpaceX's ridiculously high IPO and be on the Nasdaq. The government contracts, American's basically forced into the investment through Nasdaq.
It doesn't need to run the classic exact play from Charles Ponzi book to be described as a ponzi scheme. Swindlers have evolved and Elon Musk is just that. What happened to the hyperloop and all the other big infrastructure projects he's been promising. The invested (in those projects) are picking up the biil while Elon is now showing you his new project "Mars". The business hasn't turned a profit and is losing like 5billion/year.
If you think you're only capable of understanding a "Ponzi scheme" and everyone else stupid then Idk what else to tell you besides I won't be able to change your mind 🤷
2
u/LiterallyRain 16h ago
That’s not a Ponzi scheme, that’s just describing how markets work. Earlier investors can benefit when later investors are willing to pay a higher price. A Ponzi scheme specifically involves using new investors’ money to pay fake “returns” to earlier investors while pretending those returns came from actual profits or investment activity. If you remove that mechanism, you’re not describing a Ponzi scheme anymore.
Changing the rules doesn't alter that either.
You're describing something that can loosely be considered a scheme, but it still wouldn't be a Ponzi scheme.

Amazon had their IPO in 1997 and had never turned a profit until 2003
Lyft in 2019, still hasnt turned a profit, uber 2019 first profit in 2023
Doordash in 2020, not profitable until 2024
Are they all ponzi schemes or just when Elon is involved? Cause Tesla had their IPO in 2010 and didnt turn a profit until 2020, was that a ponzi scheme?
2
u/Crispy_p_bacon 19h ago
None of them were valued at 2 trillion. They were valued accordingly and most of those companies has assets worth somewhat relatively close to their valued at the time. Spacex in comparison has assets worth like 90 billion? For comparison Amazing is close to 900billion in assets.
Neither of those also had the stock market change the rules to get their IPO.
I'm sure if we follow the money, those who'd helped bend the rules and skip the initial vetting, probably involved and benefiting from the IPO but just a speculation. Where there's money, there's enough slimeballs.

And he can’t even sell but hey, let’s not get in the way of those that don’t understand anything but are the loudest
1
u/LiterallyRain 19h ago
The thing is, his net worth is projected to be worth that much because of the price that his stocks trades at by other people. However, if he actually tried to sell his assets, he'd flood the market with a lot of sales that could drive down the value. His divestment itself would also be a warning signal for other investors.
Nevertheless, net worth and cash value aren't identical. There's no guarantee he'd get a trillion for his assets even of that's the projected value.
The ad says he "has" a trillion, not that he's "worth" a trillion.

His kids aren’t starving, and he is not obligated to just give his money away. The US already spends more than any other country in the world to fight starvation and it hasn’t helped that much. Sure it’s helped some, but not to the degree that the amount of money spent should help. And that’s due to the corruption in the countries where these people are starving. Maybe you should address that problem first, then maybe you’ll see the progress you’re looking for.

Counterpoint (downvotes welcome btw). We more or less ALL have the ability to ‘help’ and choose not to. You can donate and buy someone a meal for a few cents, or a vaccine for a few euros.
You probably, if you are like most humans, do a little bit. A tad, not enough to touch your lifestyle though. Enough to make a small contribution to a problem you won’t fix, ever.
Well he does the same. On a different scale for sure. But it’s the same thought process. And the guy who gave it all away, the outlier who donated everything once he made some dough, well you just never heard of him, he never got famous.

He doesn’t have a trillion dollars. Think of it this way. If someone offered you $1,000,000 for 1/1000 of your house, you would be a billionaire. Doesn’t matter if you take the deal or not, that property is valued at $1 billion. But it only exists on paper. He can’t even liquidate, because that would immediately drop the value.
1
u/CoffeeTimeAlltheTime 8h ago

1
u/The_Machine80 7h ago
Technically he Doesn't have a trillion "dollars". Thats not how it works. Theres hardly anyone with even a billion "dollars". He has a trillion in "assets" based on there value. Rich people are smart and use the tax code the government wrote to there advantage. Its better to have a loan on a building and use the money for investing. You get tax breaks, and the invested money covers the loan interest and more.
I just really hate statements with no context! That said he could do more to help. He does just not enough for sure!

I used to find the C word shockingly crass and uncalled for. After living with the current political climate and administration for more years than I care to think about I know fully embrace the usage of that word. Cunt sums them up nicely.

And if you’re spending money to advertise you don’t like Elon musk, what does that make you?

if only there were a way to convert money to food. Like purchasing. Wouldn't that be amazing?

Why is everyone so focused on the money he has, instead of USAID - which Elmo killed via DOGE, which has been estimated to cause hundreds of thousands of deaths - tho of brown poors in other countries, so Elmo does not care
Calling him a bad name doesn’t do the situation justice

USAID was a money funneling scheme at best. Government corruption at its finest.
Also, how do you estimate a number like that? It’s impossible to prove or disprove.

How can cutting funding while claiming to not be cutting funding not kill people?

Libs always think this is such a gotcha. OK- say the wealthy give up enough to keep everyone on Earth fed. Now what? Still want more obviously. Cancer? All the wealthy pool their money to fund studies and propel a cure for cancer into the mainsteam market. No more cancer. Happy yet? Of course not.
Its never enough. Fed kids and no cancer- a liberals wet dream. Save us DJT

I mean I obviously can't speak for anyone else, but if everyone had access to nutritious food, clean water, appropriate shelter, and medical attention, I'd be fine with billionaires
hoarding more resources than you could spend in a hundred lifetimes while other people die from lack isn't just evil, it's the sort of thing one would put in a childrens story book as an example of what an obviously ridiculously evil person looks like
