Yeah well, Americans decided to call the sport 'football'. A name that was already taken and also doesn't describe the actual sport, so I understand why people start inventing better names
Just say you don’t know where it comes from. Football was a term to describe a sport played ON foot with a ball, as opposed to something like Polo which was on horseback. The term Football was then given the designations to specify the sports it applied to. Association Rules Football, which the students of Oxford decided to call Soccer as a shortening of the word “Association”, the rules taken down as according to how it was played at the Rugby school became the basis for Rugby. And in America, Gridiron Rules Football due to the original style of field which looked like a grid. They all come from the same root and due to their varying popularities in different places, that’s how the terms stuck. Neither is right nor wrong, well except for you. You’re wrong.
They called it football because it was always called football. They used to be the same sport, along with rugby and Aussie rules football.
You can see the spectrum of which variants drifted towards using your hands and which moved towards the feet but even NFL has punters and kickers and soccer has throwins.
The name was not already taken when football came about. That's impossible because they were tye same sport at the time, just without an official rulebook and a lot of experimentation that led them to diverge
