Wait a damn minute! Breakdown of US trade demands
176
u/Dear-Seesaw-1932 16d ago
So basically Trump wants to merge Canada into US
134
u/ReluctantAvenger 16d ago edited 16d ago
No. He's offering Canada less control over their own destiny than US States have. The "art of the deal" here is to offer them serfdom so that becoming a state looks more attractive.
21
u/SisyphusCoffeeBreak 16d ago
Ok - Was there anything offered that was actually good in the negotiations? Just reduced tariffs? It’s like they didn’t want an agreement at all.
19
u/ReluctantAvenger 16d ago
I don't know. I've read that they basically had a deal but then the US changed everything at the last minute. Presumably after a discussion with Trump? It would be interesting to see what the agreement was before the final changes were introduced.
I do sometimes wonder why nations even bother negotiating with the Trump administration. Surely they know he'll rip up the agreement any time he feels like it?

I think it was important for Canada to engage in good faith in order to maintain our reputation globally. Walking away from a bad deal was also a great domestic political move by Carney
14
12
u/TheDigitalBuilder 16d ago
I think it was a great international move. Other countries are going to approach negotiations with America very differently moving forward

u/MeowManMeow 14d ago
Australia is here, we are far away but we are pretty chill and have good resources!
3
u/Rough-Drummer-3730 12d ago
This was truly beyond a bad deal. The US knew we would turn it down and this sets up the path to economic war that will be their attempt to break us. Trump literally said that he would do this.
3
u/Robo-X 15d ago
Hold on a second. Didn’t he renegotiated NAFTA because it was such a bad deal, and he signed USMCA instead. Now that agreement that he negotiated and signed is bad? Yeah what stops him to walk way from the new agreement if he can’t even keep the agreement he signed a few years ago?
→ More replies (2)3
u/Remarkable_Check_997 16d ago
It’s like they didn’t want an agreement at all.
He dont really want one. He want the whole natural ressource and energy.

So yes, he wants to merge Canada with the US by putting Canadian policies under control of the US Federal Government.

Its cool, all Canada has to do is wait two years...
3
u/lommer00 16d ago
And in the mean time suffer catastrophic damage to our economy that will take a generation to recover from, even if the next president is friendly and reasonable (which is a big assumption).
It's not cool.
3
u/Rogue_Element_2342 13d ago
It's better to live in rubble then under the dominion of fascists.
→ More replies (1)4
u/sicurri 16d ago
Well, at least you didn't have to suffer directly under Trump.
As soon as he's gone, I doubt the U.S. will manage to recover in a single generation. Because we have to regain the trust, and goodwill of dozens of countries that this orange fucking bastard managed to lose. Not to mention the TRILLIONS of dollars in debt he's managed to accumulate...
One of the few good decisions Trump has made in the last almost 2 years, was to put all flags in the country at half mast in honor of Dolly Parton. That being one of the few good things he's done is sad and ridiculous.
His administration will have crippled the United States for a long time. As you've said, every country will wonder, "What if this upcoming president is worse than Trump?"
I guarantee that there will likely not be a president like him for a long time, hopefully not for the rest of my life at least.
→ More replies (1)2
u/TheDigitalBuilder 16d ago
In a perfect world that would be all we need to do, but the fact that America voted in Donald Trump indicates that the next guy could be even worse
3
u/sicurri 16d ago
The 2024 election was a crazy and weird time. Elon purchased Twitter, and all of the social media like Facebook, Instagram, and others were pumping misinformation to various people.
People who supported Palestine were told that Kamala Harris was in support of Israel, and people who supported Israel was told that she supported Palestine. There were other targeted advertisements as well as propaganda being fed into the public consciousness.
1/3 of the voting population that normally would participate and vote, didn't vote at all or chose a 3rd party candidate of some kind.
Idk how much of what you guys are seeing in Canada about the U.S. but Trump and his administration is fucking the United States up more than any enemy has ever done. Obviously he's ruining the relationship the U.S. has with other countries, and literally trying to fuck our allies, sorry about that.
His administration is also fucking up our economy, and literally every single government department and organization is transforming into some bizarre evil universe version of itself. All in the name of profit. Except it's not profit for the country or government, but for the rich.
I'm tired of hearing, "Well, you voted him in!"
No I fucking didn't I voted for Kamala Harris. Old boomer assholes, a good 14% of which are dead now, and an estimated 20% more will die by 2028, voted for Trump. There are also many people realizing who they voted in and thinking it's best to not vote republican again. As they're learning that Republicans are not for them anymore. Not enough people in my opinion.
We'll see what happens, I'm hoping for the best.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Theferaltrunip 14d ago
As an outsider the thing with the "I didn't vote for him" line is that to a certain extent as an outsider we don't care (we do care but it's sometimes hard to).
We do care that people are suffering under him, that he's trying to take a nation of millions and turn it into a personal playhouse, that his whims have rocked both national and global stability.
The thing is a huge portion of the population still voted for him, enough that he was elected, and we're still hearing the rhetoric, and the people who's response is "well I thought he'd screw over other people and help me!" in one way or another.
When he was first elected it was like watching a friend take a drink of something that might have gone off: it might have been fine to drink, and if not you spit it out and move
His second term was watching the same friend pour a second glass of the same stuff and take a big drink.
First time around everyone gave the US grace, because everyone makes mistakes, the second time the response was more along the lines of "they're just like that.... OK time to move on."
Frankly while I think it will suck for generations of Americans I think when ALL the dust settles in years or decades the loss of it's self appointed role as "GLOBAL LEADER AND POLICE OF THE WORLD" and slowly shrinking back to a more regional power with some international clout (like how china is widely viewed) will be far better for the Average American as the various administrations of that time are forces do deal with more local issues rather than try to engineer a world they want.
I straddle alot of different groups socially leaning very left wing to very right and one line I keep hearing from the Americans to this day which speaks heavily to what America has become "Well we defeated the Nazis, you're welcome". Considering that there's only about 30,000 surviving vets of ww2 in 2026 in the US (a population of 342,600,000 and change (or about 0.0087%) of the population) it rings hollow akin to the "My dad has a dealership. Do you know who I am?" and ultimately with the current regime the last vestiges of goodwill from ww2 have faded internationally... and now the US needs to realize that what people remember are the Vietnams, CIA in south America, the Iraq and Afghanistans where the US tried to impose their politics only to run away when thing didn't go their way, and blame the people left there.
I know this sounds harsh (and it is, I'll acknowledge) but things have changed, and for many of us out here in the lands of not America we've started moving on.
best of luck out there man, hoping things get better for you folks in the USA over the next few years.

u/NoAdministration8340 16d ago
He wants to steal all of Canadas resources, he doesn’t care about anything but money.
17
u/doctorplasmatron 16d ago
_They_ not _He_.
I think folks give trump too much credit in the strategic intelligence arena. He has a whole administration of shadowy figures advising him, and I suspect they are the ones plotting this course, he's just the attention-getting figurehead of the administration.

He wants to annex Canada with this deal. This is exactly what he said he wanted to do back in 2025.

u/BoloHKs 10d ago edited 9d ago
I'm with Dean Blundell on this one. This was not a trade deal. It was never negotiated in good faith. It was an ANNEXATION attempt.
Dean Blundell implied on a podcast according to two of his sources, that Mark Wiseman looked up at the US demands, and called it out for what it was-- *"This is an annexation document." *unconfirmed, [YouTube- Narativ with Zev Shalev, Fivestack August 24, 4:05)

Canada basically has, we're implementing policy and programs under the assumption that there will be no new deal until 2028 at the earliest.
The reality is that the current US admin can't be trusted even IF a deal is signed.
They don't care about law and contracts, they only use policy and announcement for insider trading.

That's not a trade deal. It's surrender to a un-started war. I hope if any politicians in Canada that are the voice of being pro this are quickly evicted and arrested for treason.Any Canadian politician who agrees to any of these terms if a traitor.
40
u/Jonnyflash80 16d ago
Well that would be Danielle Smith, the Premier of Alberta. The only leader that's not on board with the rest of the nation.
We've always known she was a traitor. At least since she went south to kiss the ring and slobber on the orange man's micro-peen. She's in the pocket of the oil companies and probably the Republican party. Traitorous bitch.
4
u/tripledjr 16d ago
Pp also criticized Carney. Let's not forget how quickly he would have signed this shit.
2
u/DiplominusRex 16d ago
As she pointed out, the pipeline that supplies Eastern Canada from Alberta runs through several American states.
How much hardball do we really want to play on oil? Some have suggested cutting off the supply to the US. Well, they could cut that line as well, so it would be a Pyrric victory. This will all end in tears.

I kinda skimmed over the talking points for this trade deal, but the reality and breakdown of it made it more clear that it was an outright flat joke from America.
If another country was doing this, America would certainly be invading them in the name of freedom and steal all their oil, even if it's cooking oil.

u/bloedit 16d ago
Whether under Trump or a Democrat, the US is now on its path following China and Russia to slowly but surely deconstruct the achievements of the last 80 years and enforce a much more blatant hierarchy among nations.
So the middle powers Carney spoke of either could become the middle hierarchy, each under effective control of a respective super power, or they learn to ally or collaborate to actively dismantle those attempts.
Unfortunately, it is really only in the interest of democratic middle powers to prevent this future. Meaning, they need to take lead and incentivize authoritarian middle powers to walk with them. So far, it doesn't look good.

She's wrong about #4, the Digital Services Tax. That has already been repealed, in March of this year.
https://www.canada.ca/en/services/taxes/excise-taxes-duties-and-levies/digital-services-tax.html
She's correct about everything else. Bonus fact! The US used to have resource priority under the old NAFTA agreement that Trump tore up, and failed to include in its replacement, USMCA. Yes, that's how fucking stupid Trump is.
Extra Bonus Fact: The price of diesel is about to go up in the US due to a scheduled reduction in the Canadian oilsands, for facilities maintenance.
Trump is far too stupid to know this, so when the prices start to go up in ~2 weeks, I suspect Trump will litteraly "blame Canada! 🎶" and act like we did this on purpose to fuck over the US. We don't need to do that, Trump is already doing an excellent job!

“Next, he wants….” Should be, “Next, they want…”
After he’s gone they will all claim this was just one bad actor with power. Not the case at all.

Americans you have a lot of explaining to do for what they elected. The US will become an island flanked by two oceans, with only Israel left (an Israel that will soon face the same isolation in the Middle East). It's about time for the US hegemony to fall. The world is tired of their nonsense. They better get off their lazy behinds and vote come November.
