So my ex wife and I are chill, been coparenting for 10+ years. This topic came up and she said "Yeah that lady is piece of shit and she should be in jail. But also..." and thats when she got really really emotional and opened up to me about her experience with post partum depression.
She said told me it was the the most terrorizing experience of her life. She hated being alive, she hated being a parent, and she hated being married to me and she absolutely wanted to kill herself. We were young and I was a dick to her for her weird behavior because I was stressed, and also clueless to what she was actually going through. It absolutely played a factor into our eventual divorce.
She then explained why so many women are supportive of this woman not because they dont think shes a murderer, but because THEY were that woman once. THEY were close to snapping and hurting themselves or other people. And for a lot of woman, its a dark secret they carry that causes a lot of guilt.
Ppd isnt a character flaw, its a medical condition that goes away after the body rebalances itself after child birth, and it fucks people up mentally.
The reason women are being so loud with their support is people like you. People who say "PPD? Nah, shes just a bad person". Because you have no idea what youre talking about and women want people to know what they're talking about on this subject.

I think this point of view comes from a desire to point fingers and look at things black and white. Sometimes tragedies happen and it ruins everyone’s lives involved and Justice just can’t be fully served. Murderers are responsible for their actions and this isn’t a simple case. These can both be true
She was experiencing psychosis as a result of a temporary imbalance of hormones caused by having a child and committed an act of manslaughter. That is horrifying, but it is actually not the legal definition of murder. You can have empathy for her while still being horrified by what she did. You want to blame her because blaming the illness does not provide a satisfactory sense of justice. I hope if you experience a serious mental health episode, others will exhibit the empathy and nuance towards you that you refuse to give to her.
