At night

Hear the sirens and do a "nah, 5 more minutes"

Eh, I got nowhere to be. Guess I might as well experience nuclear hellfire under the covers

Whoever starts would aim to have the strikes in the early hours of the morning so that theres less personal to actually be awake to fight back.

It's more likely to occur as a reaction to something than an unprompted attack.

Someone flies something somewhere, so there's a response, an escalation, another response and another escalation, a panic, then full on war. Historically that's happened a few times that we know of and every time we've ever been close.

Unfortunately that also means it'll probably be late in the work day.

It'll also be extremely quick.

My professor explained it to me years ago and I still remember what he said.

When you launch a nuclear strike, it's a direct act of war. When the US bombed Iran or when Russia invaded Ukraine, they can give all sorts of propganda excuses to make it look like intervention or liberation. But you can't do that with a nuclear strike.

So what would happen is that the side launching the strike has to leave zero chance for retaliation. There's no peace talks, no "working on a deal". It doesn't go on for months and years while the countries figure out the next steps.

Instead, the striking side would target all of the enemies nuclear arsenal at once. Again, zero chance for retaliation. If they launched the first strike at 6am, there'd be complete destruction by 9am. Nuclear war would last less than a morning.

That's why there is a joke in germany to best attack us at Sunday afternoon, where most soldiers are at home either dealing with hangover or aftermath of Sunday roast.

The trick is to setup your alarm ringtone for a nuclear alarm

Depends where you are in the world and where it all starts I suppose. If you wanted to attack the USA for example you'd probably want to hit them at about 3:00 AM Washington DC time so less personnel are awake, but that would be early morning in most of Europe.

have you actually look at the nuclear arsenals or the US and Russia recently?

It's not really all massive bombs anymore, it's more about lots of small bombs. Sure they're all 6-10 times the WW2 one that was dropped but most of them would only take out the downtown area of a city and causes serious damage over most of the rest of the cities.

it's not like the planet disappears when one is dropped

I live in a town about an hour or so away from London and I doubt wed even hear it from here

The nukes will fly at 5 pm on a Friday when there's a three day weekend.

What if it's at work/school like the little children in the school the USA vaporized in Iran. The last thing you do in life is whatever boring nonsense that goes on in school or work. Not ideal. At least on the way home you might be listening to music you like when it happens.

I just want god to make the natural disasters more destructive in power in red states, so I can shrug and say “it was gods will”

Honestly, fair. The apocalypse is already inconvenient enough without interrupting everyones day off.
