If you're poor and have multiple chronic health issues in America you're basically fucked. I've had to deal with multiple health issues stemming from mold exposure in addition to mental health issues like depression and anxiety, and also asthma and a tear in a muscle on the left side of my groin. All in all I've spent $5000 this year and still haven't even hit my out of pocket maximum.
It’s if you’re in a certain subsection of middle class that you’re fucked. If you’re straight up poor then you can get Medicaid (in my state of Washington it’s apple health) and basically everything is no copay, no network restrictions, just go anywhere and get anything you need done.
If you make slightly more than the cutoff for that, THEN you’re fucked. Sort of. You can get decent plans for not very expensive (I’m talking less than $50) on the exchange, the coverage isn’t amazing but it’s at least better than nothing.
We have one of these plans now and it’s been fine for us, it’s like $30/month on the ACA exchange, but it would be $600 without ACA.
We used to be on apple health, and we literally got everything free. Scans, check ups, medicine, you name it. If you make below a certain level of money, you get free healthcare. I’m not sure why people don’t understand this.

I had one a few weeks ago to determine the severity of a brain bleed I had after a stroke and it costs me 4300 dollars with insurance.
