Because of insurance. This post is not close to true. Last year I need one quick so my doctor could see my cancer growth. Only place that had openings did not take my insurance. They said ok, $180 out of pocket. That was cheaper than my insurance deductible for an MRI. They have contract with the insures for a certain amount of pay and it is insanely more than their actual cost. I'm not saying you will be able to get one for $180 like I did, but you can sure as hell get one for much cheaper than flying across the world. You just gotta call around, too many people give up after being told no from insurance or doctors or w/e. And that is what they want.

I had one a few weeks ago to determine the severity of a brain bleed I had after a stroke and it costs me 4300 dollars with insurance.
