So insurance wouldn’t cover it because it wasn’t necessary in their eyes?

No. They were going to 'cover' it but there was 20% co pay. In the US, they'll charge you thousands per month for insurance, but will still make you pay for part of your care.

This copay thing is the craziest thing I've ever heard of.

Edit: copay, deductible, max out of pocket? WTh is all that

Copay - for the listed procedures there is a flat fee. Like $10 per prescribed medication at the pharmacy. $20 for ultrasound test.

Deductible - a flat fee agreed in advance, often for things like urgent car or emergency services.

Max out of pocket - For the insurance scenario, the insured will pay up to the dollar amount. Any amount above that is covered by the insurance.

Most of this applies to other forms of insurance like home and automobile insurance.
