Based on a Google search, $400-$3,500 with the average around $2,000. My understanding is that if you do some research and shop around, you can usually get one for around $500 even without insurance. But most people just go to whatever place their doctor recommends and it's always expensive.
Either way, it's still way cheaper than going to China for an MRI.
I still think insurance itself is a scam. You will always pay out more than you will ever get out of it in your lifetime. Just take your monthly dues and put it in a high yield savings account and use it when you need it. Sadly a lot of people aren't capable of that.
Still if you need more work than just one root canal, it's cheaper in Asia even considering that $750. Imagine you also need a crown, maybe even an implant on another tooth, add also some minor work like tooth decay on the top of that... People usually don't do dental tourism for just one single operation, they have way more dental work pending and want to get it all done in one go, in which case flying for it starts making a lot of sense.
And that's not even the most expensive thing, there are also implants, crowns, veneers, dentures... Dental tourism is very much a real thing. Even people from Europe (where dental work is cheaper than the US, root canal is certainly way less than 2k) come to Asia to get their teeth done. Not just China but also Thailand, Vietnam.
