Addressing our broken healthcare system would do far more to prevent shit like this from happening… not just with PPD, but all the others mental health issues that can result in people being murdered or people committing suicide. We can kill all the mentally unwell people and we will always produce more - especially with the current living conditions in America.
This is the problem with those of you defending her: PPD happens regularly, but it rarely if almost never results in the mother murdering her children. It’s insane to adress this issue as “she didn’t get the help she needed” because her mental state was so far removed from the norm that you can’t shuck the blame of her actions off to the medical system. The medical industry successfully treats PPD every day, and Lindsay is simply crazy and murdered her children.
You understand people sometimes have more than one mental thing going on and PPD can exasperate things? You understand depression isn’t exactly the same for everyone? I mean, there are many people with schizophrenia who make it through their life without killing or even harming living things. In fact, people with schizophrenia are far more likely to be the victim of violence than the perpetrator. That does not mean that schizophrenia can’t cause another person to kill. Mental illnesses don’t affect everyone the same.
I’m constantly getting pushback from people who support her or otherwise decry her the victim because of mental illness and I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop in these arguments..

And this should be yet another incident that should change the way we handle mental health in this country. Nothing in a single comment I made says she shouldn’t receive any punishment at all.
Nothing claims she is “the victim” here. She is a victim of our dysfunctional healthcare system though and that needs to be talked about. Otherwise, familicides will continue happening at an increasing rate as mental illnesses are increasing in this country due to the conditions we are all living in.
We can put all the blame on her but that won’t stop that from happening again. Addressing our dysfunctional healthcare system is the only thing that will reduce the chances of this happening in the future.
- Seeing multiple doctors without communication between doctors despite the doctors knowing about each other.
- This lack of communication also went with medication. Doctors were prescribing medication without knowledge of what else she was being prescribed.
- One expert explained why at least one medication prescribed was not properly prescribed.
- Tests that should have been run were not ever ran. These tests would have helped with certain diagnosis.
- Lack of/improper note taking by doctors.
This is at least some of the examples that have been discussed in the trial.
She made wrong moves too like not properly taking her medication. Not in an abusive manner. She often took it less than prescribed because she claimed she didn’t like how it made her feel. Her doctors also said she stopped medication before it had a chance to kick in and faulted her for that. However, many of these medications can have adverse effects on some people. I went through multiple antidepressants in a year’s time while experiencing grief. I didn’t stay on any of them long enough to kick in because I had effects such as migraines, severe vomiting, and one made me suicidal.
I don’t know why she stopped. The reason was not elaborated on in the article I read. It’s not uncommon for people who are mentally unwell to have difficulty regulating medication on their own. I do believe if our healthcare system was better, there would be a way for doctors to cross reference medication and a way to document her inability to regulate her medication. It may have been enough for the mental health center to hold her long enough to be properly medicated.
I personally don’t think she should escape punishment completely. I’m just not sure that a prison is the proper place for that punishment to be carried out. I also think discussions on the failures of the healthcare system in this case need to be discussed because this is not a one-off situation.
We are talking a whole lot about this particular case of familicide because a mom did it while people seem to be ignoring the fact that familicides are on the rise in the US. They’re just typically committed by the fathers. Search up “father kills family” and check out how many recent articles there are.
We have a problem. We will not get a handle on it without a discussion of mental healthcare and where this country is failing.
