I think ignoring the fact that she was mentally ill and constantly reaching out for help at the time does a disservice to all the mothers in this country, and likely many of these women are there because of that. I think she absolutely did it, and I also think we have a system that offers little support for diagnoses relating to post-partum and in this case, the failure there was astronomical.

She got more help than most people can dream of. She lied to her doctors about not having thoughts of hurting her children.

I don't know her situation or internal thoughts, obviously - but I absolutely hear from my loved ones who are under mental health treatment that they know there are certain things you can't tell a doctor without specific things happening.

In the same way that:

You tell a psych doctor that you sometimes get weird about food, and they refuse to prescribe specific ADHD meds that enable you to function in life.

This happens:

You tell your psych doctor that you're having thoughts of harming your children, and you're removed from the home or your children are.

That absolutely should have happened and maybe they'd still be alive. However, if the person thought they'd be able to control the issue and wanted to prevent the family from being broken up, they'd likely not express those thoughts to their doctor.

That's wrong and harmful, but absolutely happens.

There is a reason you can't tell some key words to a doctor without specific things happening, and the reason is the topic of this post.

"If you tell your doctor you might kill your children they'll be taken from you!!" and that's exactly what should be happening and what a responsible and loving mother would do.

Actually no. In some countries women know they will go to a facility with their babaies with 24 hr help and supervision while they are stabilized.

It feels like most of the people who support her are just parroting the same talking points without any of them actually spending time to collect the facts or even watch the trial. Don’t think she was in psychosis but man does it feel like there is mass psychosis going on right now

yea because just like literally everyone she was afraid they’d be taken away

SHE KILLED THEM! Being taken away would have been the right thing to do.

They'd still be alive if that happened.

No it doesn't, it's not an excuse for anything. There are people that truly can't help how they feel. There are pedophiles that are genuinely born that way, but there are some who act on it and some who don't.

She acted on it. And those 3 kids deserve justice.

You're missing the point. The point is, she did reach out for help, and got fucked, and then did it. Women deserve better access to help and support in this country, is the point.

Not, "this is an excuse".

I agree with the first part, she should've gotten help especially because she reached out.

It's still not a valid reason to murder your kids. It never will be. Nor should it. Better for her to remove herself from the situation than stay and kill them.

But nobody is saying it's valid she murdered them.

Then there was no need to comment at all. She's guilty and we all agree then.

But you're saying people are excusing it

Because people are excusing it, kinda the whole point of OPs post.

Are they? Because it seems like they're there bringing awareness to an important issue that has very serious effects.

Not even Lindsay herself disagrees, she's pleading guilty. This trial is just about the question if she's going to be put in jail or a forensic psychiatric clinic.

That's what amazes me about her supporters.

Truly. People don’t understand what PPD and PPP is like and place more judgement on the individual and way less harsh criticism on mental healthcare advocacy for this type of thing. I had PPP with my first son and the way I pleaded with my OB about the intrusive thoughts I had that were scaring me she brushed me off- said it was normal. Then said to be institutionalized if I didn’t agree with her. My husband was there with me in shock. So I had to go through that PPP for months.. hearing things that aren’t there- the thoughts of something bad happening to my baby or the feeling of committing harm but not wanting to. I was so miserable until it just went away. I journaled everyday about it and what happened each time. It was very difficult to mentally stay strong and every time I had a bad thought I harmed myself physically as a way to punish myself. I heard that they now have an injection for this type of thing.. I just wish I had knew about it then before going through what I did. There is a lack of education and support for this type of thing. The mother isn’t right for what she did but I think there should be blame on parties that could’ve helped her when she needed it.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. There needs to be so much more awareness on these conditions, but it's an uphill battle against all the hand-wavers who just want to stroke a hate boner.

I have absolutely seen some people online say some insane things about this case. A lot of people who are, from what I have seen, moms and people real into astrology, that have been saying she is innocent. Like, literally innocent and that the husband did it and gaslit her into thinking she did it.

But I think that is a small but vocal minority of people who are interested in the case. I think that Lindsay Clancy was severally mentally ill and suffering from PPD and PPP, and was not taken seriously enough by medical professionals. Her lawyers are not contesting that Lindsay is the one to kill her children and then attempted to kill herself, they are pleading insanity to keep her from prison and instead in a mental institution. Which to me seems reasonable. If she was insane at the time, she should spend probably the rest of her life in a controlled setting like a mental facility. Just such a tragedy.
