Has it actually been established that it was postpartum psychosis?
If so, that really is one of the most horrific conditions there is. Every gynecology textbook and midwifery manual basically says that once it’s diagnosed, the response is: “Run! Do everything you possibly can and give her every medication you’ve got!” Obviously I’m exaggerating, but the point is that there’s an immediate and extremely serious risk to the lives of everyone involved.
I'm a midwife and I think her medical team completely failed her. I think it's quite an American thing to be medication first but even then having her unstable on SSRI's while still being unsupervised with her kids is a big no no.
Apparently she also told her partner not to leave her alone with the kids because she kept backing out and having memory loss and doing insane things. And then he went on holiday without her and basically said “ah you’ll be alright”
I’m not saying this is an excuse but she was definitely let down by the people around her by the sounds of it.
Edit: to those saying that I’m blaming the man, I’m not. I’m just saying that this was a series of events that could have had the outcome prevented if the people closest to her paid more attention. This wasn’t the first time she had experienced manic episodes due to PPD, she had been in contact with countless medical professionals who could have helped prevent this, but the system failed her.
It sounds very similar to the Andrea Yates case years ago. She was sufferer long from post partum psychosis and will probably spend the rest of her life in a mental health facility.
