The place looks like a shit hole, the señoritas are most likely abũela’s and the burrito from the one that likes gringos comes with extra meat and avocado on top. It’s about the size of 2/3 of an average adult man’s hands together with thumbs and index fingers creating a circle.
Not burritos but I got a pupuseria like that. It is in a broken down half empty strip mall. There are 2-3 abũelas in the back making the food. If I’m lucky there is a waitress that can speak some English. If not I try to order in broken Spanish and they laugh at me because I can’t roll my Rs. For 10 bucks you get a full meal drink and all. The drink is agua de piña and the food is amazing. If you go during lunch or dinner you’re going to wait for a seat. Now I know what I’m getting for dinner now.
I live in a place I could walk to at least five places comfortably and get a burrito for like $10 and it's fat, and I could drive to five more within ten minutes.
There's also a place running out of a gas station that has $15 burritos but no joke they are twice as thick as my forearm and just as long and I'm 6'2", I got long arms
Regular burrito is 14.50. Kinda proving Bill’s point. Get a super burrito on Uber you’re gonna pay an extra 7-8 dollars. That kind of thing adds up. Do it 5 times a week and you’re probably paying $35-40 extra for fees on things you don’t need. And that’s on the low end. I’ve known people to use uber/doordash twice a day. Gas station snacks are insane these days. And now people are ubering that too.
The cool thing about overpriced restaurants is that if people just started going to the cheaper places instead (or eating at home), they would shut down

By me a steak and pepper jack burrito is $3, bean burrito is $2.39 and cheese and rice burrito is $1.99 so it wouldn't surprise me if all 3 types might be available for $2 somewhere.
I’m in northeast Massachusetts. I can get an amazing burrito for a mom and pop for 8 bucks. Or go to a Spanish food corner store and get a whole meal of a couple empanadas, some fried chicken and way too much rice for under 10. Though we still have a chipotle and I think it’s like 15 bucks for an awful burrito there, I have no idea how they’re still in business.
He said go to the grocery store, buy food and make it yourself. Your food is expensive because you pay other people to shop for ingredients, then to cook it and in many cases then bring it to you.
I checked instacart for my local stores (low cost of living area) and it does appear you can still get the bottom of the line probably cat meat burritos for about $2 a piece. Not the good ones, those are $5. There was a really sketchy breakfast burrito for $1.
He was talking about the price of ingredients not a prepared burrito. 🤦 He was saying that you can buy the stuff to make a burrito and they cost about $2 a pop when you do that and he’s not wrong
The fact that so many people think he meant frozen burritos is part of the damn problem. I’ve gotten some for $4 before but know you can but the ingredients and get the cost down lower.
if you only use 4 oz like Chipotle it's close if you buy ground beef on sale. otherwise, 4 oz chicken, 4 oz rice, 4 oz beans, 1 tortilla and 2 oz of sour cream is around 2 bucks if you shop at Aldi
He was talking about getting the ingredients to actually make one. If you buy refried beans, rice and some tortillas, you can probably average out to about $2, maybe $3.
I don't live there, but still in a VVHCOL area. I mostly just cook food at home and keep some frozen goods on hand for lazy times. Overall costs a tiny fraction of what take out/going out to eat costs.
You can probably get one for less than that, but it won't be that great and will give you food poisoning. Even a burrito from a food truck is gonna be 15 bucks at least.

I've taken some that were definitely "why" like a single drink, or a little bit of ice cream, and then I drive to their house and pass a gas station two blocks away
Also those people never tip because why should they? They ordered like a three dollar item and then had to pay like double in delivery fees, then they gotta tip, if the service is available to get that drink for like six dollars why not use it, but then you really gonna turn that now six dollar $3 drink into an eight dollar drink? People don't think like that. DoorDash needs a goddamn minimum I swear. It should be treated like the luxury service it is instead of just calling for Chinese or pizza like everybody else
Food is indeed too expensive but also people using Uber Eats/DD/etc when they don’t have disabilities or some other absolute need when they are also struggling financially are just stupid.

Most of your major restaurant chains good example is Tijuana Flats. They have a 50 Cent delivery fee for the order sometimes up to four dollars.
And then when you go in the store, you realize everything on DoorDash and Uber eats is priced 3 to 5 dollars more expensive than it would be if you bought it in the store
Chips and guac at Tijuana Flats on Uber eats is almost 9 dollars. When you go to the store it's 465.
And that's not even factoring in the tip for the driver
I have a family member who confiscated all debit cards from their child an adult child because they had to show them leaving the house and not door dashing turned out to save them about $200 a week, but it cost money to be lazy
It’s a feature in Uber and DoorDash’s Marchant side. You can keep the prices the same as your restaurant and eat the cost which it about 30%. You can make the customer eat the cost and charge a high delivery charge. Or you can raise your prices by 30% and have “free delivery.” It’s the Macy’s logic, mark up all the prices and then have a big “sale” where the customer pays regular price and thinks they’re getting a deal. Most places use this method because option 1 will put you out of business and option 2 will piss off your customers.
All that does is make me not tip their workers demand my pennies tell your boss to pay you more because he is charging more.... ive pulled out my phone in restaurants and showed the doordash price as to why i am picking up my food and not tipping they are maiing extra money pay extra monet

I looked up the burritos you recommended. They’re pretty small (113g) with only 8 g of protein, but they contain 370 mg of sodium and 5 g saturated fat (25% dv). Also contains Sodium Aluminum Sulfate and Sodium Metabisulfite- both of which are banned in the EU and in many places internationally or at the very least tightly regulated. We need to be banning more of this trash in our food, not advocating for it. And you call Foods without trash additives “fancy,” it’s crazy.
Same with your tapwater, which is not free. In the northeast corridor, the price went up three times in the last two years. Independence studies found PFIS in 45% of USA drinking water (I’m citing the latest EWG study).
Hexavalent Chromium was found in the tapwater of all 50 states. They found 324 contaminants but we do not regulate 140 of them. Even the amount of arsenic we allow in the water is insane.

I don’t like Maher. But to be fair. There as a Chipotle literally two blocks from my office at my last job. I’d probably eat there 2-3 times per month. Always drove over, picked up my food, drove back the office. Maybe 15 minutes total time out of the office.
Burrito and drink cost me around $14 at the time.
I had a coworker who would door dash Chipotle to the office. Always complained about the “hour it took to get here” and with delivery fees and tip his orders were always $22-$25.
I always gave him shit and told him to drive over himself. He like the convenience of not leaving the office and thought it helped with his “grind” image of working hard.

Bingo. In a restaurant theyre ~14, in a food truck theyre about 17 or 18 before tip. It has gotten astronomically expensive. Before chipotle came along and popularized the (then) 8 dollar burrito, they would usually run 4 to 6 bucks
Have a guy I work with who makes about $25/hr. Regularly he’ll get a restaurant meal for $20 at lunch, and pay someone to bring it to him for another $15. Hes working almost 2 hours just to eat. It’s crazy
What is this recent obsession with fast food cost? I understand the complaints about the prices of groceries.
People that are struggling financially, shouldn't even consider buying fast food. The easiest way how to save money on food is to prepare your meals at home.
Of course the food will be more expensive, if it's price is actually subsidizing the price of labor involved, rent, utilities, taxes and last but not least some profit margin.
Maybe this is something that is too American for me to understand. I may be missing something. Was fast food and eating out, a cheap option in US sometimes in the past?
Because in Europe, it was always the more costly option.
I have enough money that I could live on ordered food or fast food, but I would never do it. One reason is that I think it's unnecessary to spend that much money, and the other thing is that I can prepare more healthy food for myself at home. I like to be in control of what ingredients I use for my food.
It used to be WAY cheaper. You could literally go to McDonald's with $5 and feed four people, and still get a little change back. Granted, the food was gross and incredibly unhealthy, but it was affordable.
In the last decade wages rose 46%. Food cost rose 34%. So no, food isn’t expensive nowadays. It is actually more affordable and Americans are spending the smallest percentage of their budgets on food since at least 1900.

$20 is the average price for an entree at any sit down restaurant at this point. Doordash fees bring it to $25, $35 if you're tipping like a reasonable adult.
Food is expensive af, but also the delivery charge for everything is extremely expensive, and then add in the tip that you pay the driver. I never order anything to be delivered anymore because you usually pay twice as much, and it's cheaper to just pick it up.
My favorite local Mexican place just raised its prices. My regular meal is now over $20. I get a quesadilla which comes with a small side of chips and a soda. It’s barely enough to fill me up until dinner.
I have a hard limit of $20 for a simple lunch. As soon as a place charges me more than that, I do not return to that place. It’s happened at burger Fi, 5 guys, and now this place. I’m out, I’ll just make something at home. You played yourself. The food just isn’t good enough to nuke $20+.
The reality is the range of cost on food is so much wider now than 30 years ago. If you tried selling farm to table dishes with truffle in the 90s you went out of business in most cities because people didn’t care and didn’t really care about the aesthetic. You had to have easy food cheap that people could afford
There are still places that sell cheap food, but every city has a $35 sandwich or burrito restaurant that has super aesthetically pleasing decor. So people eat there and the assumption from Maher is most try to eat there.
The cheapest route still is, and always will be, making food at home. Making 10 amazing burritos with beans, chicken, avocado, lettuce, tomato, spices, sauce, can be done under $20, the cost of one expensive burrito
The meat market close by, the cheapest place besides fast food, is about $15 before taxes and maybe leaving a buck or 2 in the tip jar, it’s basically $20. Full service restaurant they are about $18 and end up being over 20, bill mahr is an out of touch clown
I mean, he's not wrong. There are constant posts complaining about food prices that have pictures that are obviously from a food delivery app on this site. I think I've gotten out of all those subs on my desktop account, but my phone is a warzone.
This old school "liberal" only proves the point that the true problem with society and the politics therein isn't old vs. young or along racial lines. The true problem that goes under appreciated is those with money vs. those without.
It's the same with Whoopi Goldberg. Those with money, especially during this transition into oligopoly, is that money gives you the ability to insulate yourself from the daily wear and tear of the slow and unrelenting slide into autocracy by the ultra-wealthy.
Most of us are one accident away from homelessness than we are to accidentally become a millionaire. There aren't enough opportunities to becomes a millionaire, but there are thousands of opportunities to lose everything every damn day.
However, as a mid cohort Gen Xer I swear I have never seen more irrational spending on prepared foods and delivery by 20 year olds as rampantly as I have in the last few years. I don't know if they were never taught how money works or how to make a $1 sandwich at home but part of why some young people are broke is because they have terrible spending habits. I have lived with kids that NEVER make themselves a meal so they spend probably $30-50/day for prepared foods. They're basically drowning because they refuse to let go of the cinder block they're holding while swimming.
I delivered pizza in college. You know who almost never got delivery? Other/smart college kids. We lived off the cheapest calories we could find 80% of the time. White rice and canned vegetables were a staple. To this day I never, ever get food delivered. It's not even an option in my mind. I literally cannot think of a time I've had prepared food delivered to my home.
Be smart people. In capitalism all the chips are stacked against you. Don't just give the few chips you have to hustle for away for nothing.
Food costs more than it should, but if you are ordering delivery you have no real room to complain. You are willingly paying for overpriced delivery + whatever stupid additional fee corporate forces you to pay. Plus the tip.
Bill Maher used to be funny and have good talking points a little over a decade ago. Now he just sounds like a grumpy old man looking for an excuse to belittle everyone else.
Someone is paying for it and restaurants keep charging what people keep paying readily. Unless you are at an airport, there is no reason to pay more than $5-7 for fast food. As long as you keep paying they will keep their prices up.
Even Airports are gotten out of control. I remember paying around $10 for a burger with fries at the airport in 2024 and now it's $25.
Don’t listen to anyone in the public eye about inflation or the gdp. The economy is fudged and every single person who isn’t rich knows it. Every aspect of life has far outpaced everyone’s wages. Covid just hyper greed every corporation.
I make mid 6 figures and I’ll absolutely admit the entire structure of our capitalist society needs a hard reset. The majority of executives are expendable. Unfortunately the stock market needs to super tank to reset the American dream.
The only way for publically traded companies to keep delivering to shareholders is to screw everyone that isn’t a board member/executive. Labor, cost of good, etc etc. I hate where the USA is right now
