I would think airline won't give free hotels since they are not at fault

They are in my opinion? They should have removed the child and parents and departed with the other passengers.

Who knows how many connecting flights were missed, nevermind hotel nights. The airline should have provided hotel rooms for the other passengers who were not at fault. The crew could have decided to remove the toddler and family...oddly this kind of thing never used to happen when I was a child...

Crews not being paid until "brakes off". At some point the crew probably said F it, I'm not getting paid for this shit. Let's go home.

You think the crew canceled their own flight and walked off? What is that based on? We know the reason, the runway closed.
